Himachal Pradesh (HP) has become the first LPG (Liquefied petroleum gas) enabled and smoke free Indian state. This success is backed by the Central Government’s Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) scheme and HP Government’s Mukhya Mantri Grihini Suvidha Yojana (GSY).
- While the PMUY scheme aims to get rid of the diseases caused by smoke and freeing women of the country from indoor pollution, the GSY objective is to cover those families which are not covered under PMUY.
Key Points:
- Under the Ujjwala Yojana, 1.36 lakh free domestic connections were given in the state at a cost of Rs 21.81 crore, while under the Grihini Suvidha Yojana, 3.23 lakh housewives were provided free gas cylinders at a cost of Rs 120 crore.
ii.The Mukhya Mantri GSY was launched in 2018. It focuses on conserving the environment, and to provide free LPG connection to families with no gas connection.
About Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY):
The PMUY launched by Prime Minister(PM) Narendra Modi from Ballia in Uttar Pradesh(UP) in 2016 by MoPNG to make clean cooking available to rural and deprived households.On 10th August 2021, Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi virtually launched Ujjwala 2.0 (Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana – PMUY) by handing over LPG connections, at Mahoba Uttar Pradesh.
