Prime Minister Narendra Modi visit to Jammu and Kashmir on February 20,2024Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi visited Jammu & Kashmir (J&K) on 20th February 2024. During his visit, he inaugurated, dedicated to the nation and laid the foundation stone of projects worth Rs 32,000 crore during the event held at Maulana Azad Stadium in Jammu(J&K).

  • The project related to several sectors including health, education, rail, road, aviation, petroleum, and civic infrastructure, among others.

Highlights: 

i.PM Modi Inaugurated All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Vijaypur (Samba), Jammu (J&K).

ii.He dedicated to the nation the campuses of various education institutes.

iii.He laid the foundation stone of the new terminal building of Jammu Airport.

iv.He also laid the foundation stone of various road and rail projects in J&K.

Inauguration of AIIMS Jammu:

The PM inaugurated the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Vijaypur (Samba), Jammu established at a cost of over Rs 1660 crore.

  • AIIMS Jammu is an Institute of National Importance and a premier state-of-the-art reliable high-quality Referral Centre for Tertiary Healthcare.

Note:

The foundation stone for AIIMS Jammu was laid down in 2019, under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana(PMSSY).

The motto of AIIMS Jammu is “Healing meets Hope”.

Features: 

i.The hospital is built in an area spanning over 226.84 acres along National Highway 44.

ii.The hospital is equipped with facilities like 720 beds, a Medical College with 125 seats, a Nursing College with 60 seats, AYUSH(Ayurveda, Yoga, Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha, and Homeopathy) Block with 30 beds,

iii.The state-of-the-art hospital will provide high-quality patient care services in 18 Specialities and 17 Super Specialities including Cardiology, Oncology, Urology, Neurology, etc.,

iv.The campus focused on eco-friendliness is being developed for a 4-star Green Rating for Integrated Habitat Assessment (GRIHA).

v.AIIMS Jammu has introduced a ‘Patient Centric Hospital’ initiative featuring amenities like an Indoor Navigation System, Patient Care Managers and Smart Payment Cards.

Point to note: 

In the past 10 years, the number of Medical Colleges in J&K has increased from 4 to 12, Medical seats increased from 500 to 1300 and Postgraduate (PG) Medical Seats have increased from 0 to 650.

Development of Various Education Institutes:

To develop the education and skilling infrastructure across India, PM Modi inaugurated, dedicated to the nation and laid the foundation stone of several projects worth about Rs 13,375 crore.

i.During the event, PM Modi dedicated the permanent campuses of various national education institutes, which include,

  • Indian Institutes of Technology(IIT) Bhilai(Chhattisgarh);
  • IIT Tirupati (Andhra Pradesh-AP);
  • Indian Institute of Science Education and Research(IISER) Tirupati, AP.
  • Indian Institute Of Information Technology, Design & Manufacturing, (IIITDM) Kurnool, AP.
  • Central Sanskrit University, Devprayag (Uttarakhand) and Agartala (Tripura).
  •  Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Visakhapatnam(AP), IIM Jammu(J&K) and IIM Bodh Gaya(Bihar).

ii.He also dedicated the academic and residential complexes at IIT Patna(Bihar) and IIT Ropar(Punjab) to the nation.

iii.During the event, He inaugurated the Indian Institute of Skills (IIS), a pioneer skill training institute on advanced technologies in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh(UP).

iv.He also laid the foundation stone for the construction of the permanent campus of Sindhu Central University  Khalatse, Ladakh, and the Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIIT) Raichur(Karnataka).

Others:

PM Modi also inaugurated the improved infrastructure in multiple higher educational institutes like  IIT Jammu, IIT  Kharagpur, IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi; National Institute of Technology(NIT) Delhi, NIT Arunachal Pradesh, Central University of Kerala, Kasaragod(Kerala).

New Terminal Building, Jammu Airport:

PM Modi laid the foundation stone for the new terminal building at Jammu Airport.

Features: 

the terminal spread over a 40,000 sqm area will be equipped with modern facilities catering to about 2000 passengers during peak hours.

The environment-friendly structure will showcase the local culture of the region.

Inauguration of Rail Projects Worth over Rs 16,000 crore J&K

PM Modi launched various railway projects worth over Rs 16000 crore in J&K.

i.PM Modi also flagged off the first Electric Train of J&K and the train service between Sangaldan station & Baramulla station.

ii.PM launched the 48 Km new rail line between Banihal – Khari- Sumber -Sangaldan .

  • The new line features the usage of Ballast Less Track (BLT) all along the route which will provide a better riding experience to the passengers.
  • The development of this section costs around Rs 15,863 crore. 

Note:

  • The Indian Railways will inaugurate train services on the Banihal-Khari-Sumber-Sangaldan section, a part of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project.
  • This line also features India’s longest transportation tunnel T-50 (12.77 Km) between Khari-Sumber.

iii.He also launched the newly electrified Baramulla -Srinagar -Banihal -Sangaldan section of 185.66 Km. The electrification of the route cost around Rs 470.23 crore.

Laid Foundation Stone of CUF Petroleum Depot

PM Modi laid the foundation stone for the development of the state-of-the-art fully automated CUF (Common User Facility) Petroleum depot at Jammu, J&K.

The depot which will be developed at a cost of around Rs 677 crore, will have a storage capacity of about 100000 Kilolitre(KL).

The depot will be used to store Motor Spirit (MS), High-Speed Diesel (HSD), Superior Kerosene Oil (SKO), Aviation Turbine fuel (ATF), Ethanol, Biodiesel and winter-grade HSD.

Launch of Road Projects

PM Modi laid the foundation stone for various road projects to improve connectivity, reduce traffic congestion, boost economic development, and promote tourism in the region. The development projects include,

i.Two packages (44.22 Km) of Delhi-Amritsar-Katra Expressway (Jammu to Katra)

ii.Phase two for four-laning of Srinagar Ring Road. This involves upgrading the existing Sumbal-Wayul NH-1.

iii.five packages for upgrading the 161 km long Srinagar-Baramulla-Uri stretch of NH-01,

iv.Construction of Kulgam and Pulwama bypass on NH-444. this will connect Qazigund – Kulgam – Shopian – Pulwama – Badgam – Srinagar.

These projects will improve connectivity, reduce traffic congestion, boost economic development, and promote tourism in the region.

Other projects

The PM inaugurated and laid the foundation stone of various development projects worth over Rs 3150 crores to strengthen the civic infrastructure and provision of public facilities in J&K.

  • PM Modi inaugurated; Road and Bridge projects; Grid Stations, receiving stations transmission line Projects; Common Effluent Treatment Plants and Sewage Treatment Plants; Intelligent Traffic Management system in Srinagar city; Modern Narwal Fruit Mandi; and Drug Testing Laboratory at Kathua.
  • He laid the foundation stone for the development of five new Industrial Estates across J&K; Data Centre/ Disaster Recovery Centre for Integrated Command and Control Centre of Jammu Smart City; Up-gradation of 62 road projects and 42 bridges and others.
