Highlights of CDS General Anil Chauhan’s Visit to Algeria from October 31 to November 03, 2024

CDS Gen Anil Chauhan visit to AlgeriaChief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Anil Chauhan visited the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria from 31st October to November 03, 2024.

  • This visit follows on the President of India, Smt Droupadi Murmu’s visit to Algeria in October 2024.
  • The visit was part of wider endeavour which aimed to bolster India-Algeria relations which have witness increasing cooperation in recent years, particularly in the areas of trade, education, technology and defence.

Highlights of the Visit:

i.During his visit, General Chauhan called on General Saïd Chanegriha, Chief of Staff (CoS) of the People’s National Army (PNA) of Algeria.

  • He also held discussions with senior officials from the Ministry of National Defence (MoND) of Algeria on a wide range of defence areas like: enhancing of military cooperation, security strategic interests, capacity building, and training technology exchange, among others.

ii.On 1st November 2024, CDS Gen. Chauhan attended the military parade and ceremony as the Guest of Honour. The event was organised to commemorate the 70th anniversary of Algeria’s Glorious revolution of 1 November, 1954.

  • He highlighted the shared history of both countries, fostering a bond based on shared values and principles.
  • He further mentioned that India has re-established its Defence Wing Algeria and welcomed the re-opening of Defence Wing of Algeria in India.
  • He underscored the agreement in the field of space sciences and other major initiatives taken by India in technology development.

iii.He also interacted with the Director of Higher War College and addressed senior officials of the PNA.

  • He emphasized on increasing the defence production capability of India under the “Make in India” and “Make for the World” initiatives.

India and Algeria Signed MoU on Bilateral Defence Cooperation

On 3rd November, 2024, CDS General Anil Chauhan and General Saïd Chanegriha Chief of Staff of PNA, Algeria signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on bilateral defence cooperation in Algeria.

  • This marks a major milestone in bilateral military cooperation between India-Algeria and also lays down the foundation for long-term collaboration across various sectors.
