160th edition of the Wisden Cricketers’ Almanack 2023, the cricket reference book published annually in the United Kingdom(UK), has announced the Five Wisden Cricketers of the Year 2023.
Tom Blundell(New Zealand), Ben Foakes (England), Harmanpreet Kaur(India), Daryl Mitchell(New Zealand) and Matthew Potts (England) were named the Five Wisden Cricketers of the Year 2023.
- Indian Women’s cricket team Captain Harmanpreet Kaur becomes the 1st India Women’s cricketer to be named a “Wisden Cricketer of the Year”.
Key Points:
Harmanpreet Kaur has been named the Wisden Cricketer of the Year 2023 primarily for her One Day International (ODI) century against England at Canterbury, England in September 2022.
- She scored 143 runs off 111 balls and led India to their first ODI series victory in England since 1999.
- She also captained the Indian Women’s cricket team that won the silver medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England.
Wisden Cricketer of the Year:
i.The Wisden Cricketer of the Year award is the oldest individual award in cricket and dates back to 1889.
ii.No one can win the award more than once.
iii.The winners are chosen by the Wisden editors.

Jonny Bairstow (England) wins inaugural Wisden Trophy 2023 for Edgbaston masterclass for his twin centuries against India at Edgbaston.
Wisden Leading Cricketers in the World:
England’s Ben Stokes and Australia’s Beth Mooney have been named the Leading Cricketers in the World.
i.Ben Stokes, Captain of England’s Test team, been named leading cricketer for the 3rd time. Previously he received the honour in 2019 and 2020.
- He also led England to a historic series victory in Pakistan and was part of the victorious T20 World Cup winning squad.
ii.Australia batter Beth Mooney has been named the Wisden’s Leading Cricketer in the World (Women) for the 2nd time in 3 years.
- She was a part of the Australian Women’s cricket team that won the gold medal in the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games.
- She was also a part of the squad that won the 2022 International Cricket Council (ICC) Women’s Cricket World Cup.
Wisden Leading T20 Cricketer in the World:
i.India’s Suryakumar Yadav picked up the Leading Twenty20 (T20) Cricketer in the World title.
- He became the first Indian player to score 1,000 T20 International (T20I) runs in a calendar year. Globally, he is only the 2nd player to achieve the feat.
ii.Suryakumar Yadav achieved a strike rate of 187.43 from 31 innings.
iii.He also scored 2 centuries in T20I, against England in Nottingham (UK) and New Zealand at Mount Maunganui, New Zealand.
Note:
- Matthew Hayden of Australia is the first player to score 1000 T20I runs in a calendar year.
- Between 2001 and 2005, Hayden scored more than 1000 Test runs every year.
