Gujarat Titans - Winners Of The 15th Edition Of TATA IPL 2022

On May 29, 2022, Gujarat Titans (GT) led by Captain Hardik Himanshu Pandya won the 15th edition of TATA sponsored Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 and lifted their maiden IPL trophy in their first IPL season, by defeating Rajasthan Royals (RR) at Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad, Gujarat. The league took place from 26 March 2022 to 29 May 2022.

A total of 10 teams participated in which two new teams were included, Gujarat Titans and Lucknow Supergiants.

  • IPL took place in India after the decline of Covid-19 pandemic in open doors, as spectators were allowed to watch from cricket stadiums.

In the Final of 2022 Tata IPL, Rajasthan Royals won the toss and decided to bat first, in which they posted the total of 130 for 9 (wickets) in 20 overs, later Gujarat Titans chased the target of 131 in 18.1 overs and won the game by 7 wickets.

  • Gujarat Titans were awarded the TATA IPL 2022 trophy with the prize amount of Rs 20 crore.
  • Followed by them, Runner-up team Rajasthan Royals was awarded with the prize amount of Rs 12.5 crore.
  • Third-placed Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), who lost by seven wickets to RR in Qualifier 2, received a cheque of Rs 7 crore.
  • The fourth-placed Lucknow SuperGiants received Rs 6.5 crore after going down to RCB in the Eliminator.
  •  Hardik Pandya was awarded as the Player of the match in the Final for his match winning contribution of 34 runs (30 balls) with the bat and 3/17 (4 overs) with the ball.

A total of 6 stadiums were used to play the 2022 TATA IPL,

  • League stages – Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, Cricket Club of India (CCI) in Mumbai, DY Patil stadium in Navi Mumbai and Maharashtra Cricket Association stadium in Pune (Maharashtra).
  • Playoffs-  Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, Gujarat and Eden Gardens in Kolkata, West Bengal.

  • A record total of 1000+ sixes has been hitted by players in 2022 IPL. Higher than any season.

Dwayne Bravo:

  • Dwayne Bravo (West Indies) playing for Chennai Super Kings became the highest wicket-taker in the Indian Premier League surpassing Lasith Malinga (Sri Lanka, IPL – retired).

Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI)

  • The BCCI has set the Guinness World Record by creating the world’s largest cricket jersey. The jersey, measuring 66 x 42 meters. The jersey was made to mark 15 years of IPL.

Key Changes in Rules & Regulations:

i. New batsmen take strike after catch dismissals even if the nonstriker has crossed.

  • The Marylebone Cricket Club officially tweaked the laws of the game.

ii. The matches per side in the league stage will remain 14, but the 10 teams have been divided into two groups of five each.

  • The 2022 IPL will give its 10 teams seedings and place them in two ‘virtual’ groups during the league phase of the tournament.

iii. If a ball was hit at the ‘TATA Punch car’ which was placed inside the stadium for every match, the TATA motors would donate Rs 5 lakh to kaziranga national park, Kanchanjuri, Assam for each and every time when the ball hit the car.

Women’s T20 Challenge 2022

The Fourth edition of Women’s T20 Challenge (2022) took place in India, in which a total of 3 teams participated. Supernovas women (Supernovas) won the Women’s T20 Challenge 2022, defeating Velocity by 4 runs in the final of the tournament, which was held at Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium, Pune, Maharashtra.

  • Women’s T20 Challenge was first held in 2018 and Supernovas won three editions (2018, 2019, 2022) and in 2020 Trailblazers were crowned the champions.

Note:

The 2022 edition will be the last of its kind as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), has confirmed that a franchise-based annual women’s T20 tournament will be held from 2023 which will effectively replace the Indian Women’s T20 Challenge.
