Govt banned Meghalaya based insurgent group “Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council”

On November 18, 2019 the central govt. has banned Meghalaya based insurgent group “Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council” (HNLC) due to its increased activities of violence and other subversive acts. The notification in this regard was released by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA).

Act: The central govt. banned the HNLC under sub-section (1) of section 3 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967 (37 of 1967).Meghalays HNLC bannedKey Points:

i.The group involved in activities such as intimidate and bully civilians to extort funds, maintains links with other insurgent groups of the Northeast to carry out acts of extortion and intimidation, maintaining camps in Bangladesh for training its cadre etc. These types of activities are considered detrimental to the sovereignty and integrity of India.

ii.Habitation: The HNLC openly declared its objective, the secession of the state’s areas, which are largely inhabited by Khasi and Jaintia tribes.

iii.Previous ban on HNLC: Previously in November 16, 2000, the HNLC was banned and was later lifted from ban.

iv.HNLC’s aim: The HNLC’s aim is to free Meghalaya from domination of the Garos and the outsiders, like the Dkhars (non tribals of Meghalaya), from the Indian mainland.
