Government announces recipients of 2018 Padma awards

On January 25, 2018, Government announced Padma Awards 2018.  This year, President of India, Ram Nath Kovind has approved conferment of 85 Padma Awards.

• This year’s 85 Padma Awards also include duo cases, wherein the award is counted as one.
• For 2018, 3 Padma Vibhushan, 9 Padma Bhushan and 73 Padma Shri Awards have been announced.
• Among this year’s Padma Award winners, 14 are women. The winners list also includes 16 persons from the category of Foreigners (from 10 ASEAN Countries)/Non Resident Indian (NRI)/Person of India Origin (PIO)/Overseas Citizens of India (OCI) and 3 Posthumous awardees.

Padma Awards, regarded as one of the highest civilian Awards of India comprise Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri.

• These awards are conferred to honour outstanding contribution in various disciplines/ fields of activities including art, sports, public affairs, social work, science and engineering, medicine, trade and industry, literature, civil service etc.
• ‘Padma Vibhushan’ is awarded for exceptional and distinguished service.
• ‘Padma Bhushan’ is awarded for distinguished service of high order.
• ‘Padma Shri’ is awarded for distinguished service in any field.
• These awards are announced around Republic Day every year and are conferred by the President of India at ceremonial functions which are held at Rashtrapati Bhawan usually around March/ April every year.
