Good Governance Day - December 25 2023Good Governance Day, also known as Sushasan Diwas in Hindi, is annually observed across India on 25th December to mark the birth anniversary of the former(10th) Prime Minister (PM) Late Atal Bihari Vajpayee. The day also aims to create awareness of accountability and administration of government among the people.

i.25th December 2023 marks the 10th Good Governance Day and 99th birth anniversary of Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

ii.This day also ensures that residents are treated fairly by the government and they receive advantages of various government services.

Background: 

i.In 2014, The Government of India(GoI) declared 25th December of every year, the birth anniversary of Atal Bihari Vajpayee, as Good Governance Day.

ii.The first-ever Good Governance Day was observed on 25th December 2014.

About Atal Bihari Vajpayee:

i.Atal Bihari Vajpayee was born on December 25, 1924 in Gwalior, present-day Madhya Pradesh (MP).

ii.He served three terms as the PM of India, first for a term of 13 days in 1996, then for a period of 13 months from 1998 to 1999, followed by a full term from 1999 to 2004.

iii.He was the first leader from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to have become India’s Prime Minister (PM).

iv.He received Bharat Ratna (Highest Civilian Honour in India) in 2015,  and Padma Vibhushan(2nd highest civilian award) in 1992 in the field of Public Affairs.

Good Governance Week 2023: 

i.It should be noted that the third Good Governance Week (Sushasan Saptah) was observed from 19-25 December 2023.

ii.The first Good Governance Week was observed from 19-25 December 2021.

iii.The Good Governance Week 2023 celebration was inaugurated in New Delhi, Delhi by Jitendra Singh who is the Minister of State(MoS) of the Ministry of Science and Technology(MoST), MoS in the PM’s Office(PMO), MoS of Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances & Pensions(MoPPG&P), Department of Atomic Energy(DEA) and Department of Space(DOS).

Events:

i.The inaugural event witnessed the launch of the “SpecialCampaign3.0 Assessment Report”.

ii.The event also witnessed the launch of the e-Office Advanced Analytics dashboard which can be used for in-depth data analysis along with strengthening decision-making processes in the Central secretariat.

iii.Centralised Public Grievance Redress and Monitoring System (CPGRAMS) Mobile App which offers the facility for citizen to file grievances against the government.

iv.Special Booklet on the Journey of 25 Regional Conferences from 2014-2023 and the Annual Report 2023 of CPGRAMS was also released.

v.The events of the week were organised by the Department of Administrative Reforms & Public Grievances (DARPG) under MoPPG&P.

vi.The States of Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh will present the good governance practices of their States.

Good Governance Day 2023- Events:

i.Jitendra Singh launched three new features on the integrated government online training (iGOT) Karmayogi platform.

  • iGOT-Karmayogi is an Indian-made digital platform that provides learning and career management services.

ii.In Chhattisgarh, Chief Minister(CM) Vishnu Deo Sai announced two years’ bonuses to about 12 lakh farmers in Chhattisgarh.

iii.Uttar Pradesh (UP) CM Yogi Adityanath launched  ‘Atal Geet Ganga’ a year-long program.

The three features of iGOT-Karmayogi platform:

  • My iGOT – delivers targeted training courses on the home page of individual officers
  • Blended programmes – Variable and Immersive Karmayogi Advanced Support (VIKAS) facilitates equitable access to training methodologies across all levels
  • Curated programmes – caters to the diverse learning needs of the ministries/departments and training institutions.

Additional Info:

The Special Campaign 3.0 was India’s largest campaign for Institutionalizing Swachhata and Reducing Pendency in Government Offices.
