Introduction: The RVP was introduced in 2023 and first presented in 2024 to recognise and promote groundbreaking research and outstanding achievements in the fields of science and technology.
Recognition: It is regarded as the highest national recognition for individuals working in science, technology, and innovation sectors in India.
Award Domains: The awards are conferred across 13 domains, namely Physics, Chemistry, Biological Sciences, Mathematics & Computer Science, Earth Science, Medicine, Engineering Sciences, Agricultural Science, Environmental Science, Technology & Innovation, Atomic Energy, Space Science & Technology, and allied fields.
Award Categories: The RVP 2025 comprises four categories,
- Vigyan Ratna (VR): Lifetime achievement in any field of science and technology.
- Vigyan Shri (VS): Distinguished contributions in science and technology.
- Vigyan Yuva – Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar (VY–SSB): Exceptional work by young scientists (below 45 years).
- Vigyan Team (VT): Outstanding collaborative contributions by teams comprising three or more scientists.
Rashtriya Vigyan Puraskar 2025 – Awardees:
Vigyan Ratna(VR): Professor Jayant Vishnu Narlikar was honoured posthumously for his outstanding lifetime contributions to physics, particularly in the fields of astrophysics and cosmology.
Vigyan Shri(VS) Awardees: Eight distinguished scientists were honoured with the Vigyan Shri award for their exemplary contributions across diverse scientific disciplines, including agricultural science, atomic energy, biological sciences, chemistry, engineering sciences, environmental science, mathematics & computer science, and space science.
Vigyan Yuva – Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar(VY-SSB) Awardees: In 2025, the award recognised 14 exceptional young scientists (below 45 years) for their outstanding contributions and innovative research across various domains of science, engineering, and technology.
Vigyan Team(VT) Award: The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) – Aroma Mission Team was recognised for its exceptional contributions to agricultural science, particularly in promoting sustainable farming practices through the cultivation of aromatic crops.

In September 2025, the Union Cabinet headed by Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi, approved the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research / Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR/CSIR) Scheme on “Capacity Building and Human Resource Development (CB&HRD).
- The scheme has been approved for the period of the 15th Finance Commission Cycle (FCC) 2021-22 to 2025-26 with a total outlay of Rs.2,277.397 crore (cr).
- It is implemented by the CSIR and will cover all R&D institutions, national laboratories, Institutes of National Importance, Institutes of Eminence, and Universities across the country.
