Global Wind Day is annually observed across the globe on 15th June to provide a platform to discover wind energy, its power and the possibilities in shaping the energy system.
The day is annually organised by WindEurope (European Wind Energy Association – EWEA) and Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC).
Background:
i.The first ever Wind Day, a pan-European campaign to promote wind energy, was organised by European Wind Energy Association(EWEA).
ii.The Wind Day became a global event only in 2009 when EWEA joined forces with GWEC. Since 2009, World Wind Day is annually observed across the globe on 15th June.
Objectives of Global Wind Day:
- Promote the power of wind as an effective energy source
- Highlight wind energy as a key solution to energy and climate crisis
Global Wind Day 2022 – India
The Global Wind day 2022 is celebrated to mark the development of wind energy.
The observance of Wind Day 2022 also marks the celebration of the Silver Jubilee(25th year of establishment) of the National Institute of Wind Energy(NIWE).
- The events marking Global Wind Day 2022 and the Silver Jubilee of NIWE is organised under the aegis of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav (AKAM) by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) in collaboration with NIWE and the Indian Renewable Energy Development Agency (IREDA).
- The event is held at the Auditorium, Atal Akshay Urja Bhawan, New Delhi, Delhi.
Key Points:
i.The Government of India has set a target of 500 Gigawatts(GW) of non-fossil fuel-based electric power capacity to be commissioned by 2030.
According to the Electricity Authority (CEA)’s report on Optimal Generation Capacity Mix for 2029-30, a cumulative capacity of 140 GW is estimated
to be added from wind energy.
iii.As on May 2022, India has achieved a 40.6 GW installed capacity of wind power. iv.Globally India is ranked 4th in terms of installed capacity after China, the United States of America(USA) and Germany.
