Global Startup Ecosystem Index 2022: Bengaluru Boasts Strongest Startup Ecosystem in India & 8th Globally

Bengaluru is the “strongest startup ecosystem in India & 8th globallyAccording to the Israel-based StartupBlink’s ‘Global Startup Ecosystem Index (GSEI) 2022, Bengaluru, the capital city of Karnataka, has the “strongest startup ecosystem in India” and ranks 8th among the world’s top 10 cities.

  • Bengaluru was ranked first among Indian cities in the 2022 rankings. Furthermore, it is ranked first in South Asia.

Globally, New Delhi (Delhi) is ranked 13, Mumbai (Maharashtra) is ranked 17, Pune (Maharashtra) is ranked 90, while Hyderabad (Telangana) is ranked 97.

  • The other cities in the index are Chennai (Tamil Nadu), Jaipur (Rajasthan), and Ahmedabad (Gujarat).

Key Report Findings:

i. India is among the top-20 startup ecosystems globally and has been ranked 19th in the country-wise rankings for 2022.

ii.In the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region, India is ranked 4th after Singapore, Australia, and China.

iii. Bengaluru’s startup ecosystem has been ranked the 3rd best at the city level in the APAC region, moving up two spots in 2022. The top 2 cities are: China’s Beijing (1) and Shanghai (2).

Accomplishment of Bengaluru

i. With rankings of 10 in 2021 and 14 in 2020, Bengaluru’s position in the global startup ecosystem has improved since 2020.

ii.Bengaluru is home to 364 education startups, 128 transportation startups, and 126 ecommerce and retail startups.

  • It outperforms in Education Technology (Edtech) and Transportation with a global rank of 5 in both sector-wise startup rankings.
  • The city is ranked 12th in the categories of Ecommerce & Retail and Software & Data, ranked 14th in Food Technology (Foodtech), ranked 19th in Hardware & Internet of Things (IoT), and ranked 20th in Financial Technology (Fintech).

An Overview of India’s Startup Ecosystem

i. Considering its size, population, and cost effectiveness in business operation, India has immense potential.

ii.In the last few years, it has witnessed a boom in unicorns and became a global leader in technological services.

iii. Its growth trajectory in the startup ecosystem is attributed mainly to its domestic market size and a huge Information technology (IT) industry.

iv.It drives economic growth in India, increases productivity, and completely transforms the nation.

Global Startup Ecosystem Index 2022

The Global Startup Ecosystem Index (GSEI) has been updated annually since 2017 and is the world’s most comprehensive startup ecosystem ranking of 100 countries and 1,000 cities.

  • The GSEI is created using data points that have been analysed by an algorithm that considers dozens of parameters.
