Global Day of Parents 2020Global Day of Parents is celebrated every year on June 1 globally. The day was organized by the United Nations (UN) to emphasize the critical role that the family has the primary responsibility for the nurturing and protection of children. 

Key Points:

i.The Objective of the day is to Appreciate All Parents Throughout the World for their selfless commitment to children and their lifelong sacrifice towards nurturing this relationship.

ii.Families and Parents remain at the centre of social life, ensuring the well-being of their members, educating and socializing children & youth, caring for young and old.

Background:

i.During the1980s, the United Nations (UN) began focusing attention on the issues related to the family. 

ii.In the year 1983, based on the recommendations of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), the Commission for Social Development in its resolution on the Role of the family in the development process requested to improve awareness among decision-makers, problems and needs of the family, as well as to be effective of meeting those needs.

History of the Day:

i.On December 9, 1989, in its resolution 44/82, The General Assembly proclaimed 1994 as the International Year of the Family and in resolution 47/237 of 1993, the General Assembly decided to observe May 15 of every year as the International Day of Families.

ii.In 2012, the General Assembly manifested June 1 as the Global Day of Parents, to be observed annually in honour of parents throughout the world.
