Key Findings:
1.India’s Position in Global and Regional Context
i.Mumbai, leads the Asia–Pacific (APAC) region, is the only Indian city in the top 10 global rankings for data centre capacity under construction.
ii.It accounts for 42% of India’s total data centre capacity currently under construction, and upon completion, it will increase Mumbai’s existing operational capacity by 62%.
iii.The city also ranks as the 7th most established data centre market in the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region.
Emerging Data Centre Markets in India:
i.Pune (Maharashtra) and Bengaluru (Karnataka) ranks 4th and 5th respectively among APAC’s emerging data centre markets.
ii.Chennai (Tamil Nadu, TN) hosts 21% of India’s national data centre capacity and benefits strategically from submarine cable connectivity.
India’s Broader Data Centre Landscape:
i.As of 2024, India’s total operational data centre capacity stands at 950 MW. This is projected to nearly double to 1.8 GW by 2026.
ii.Mumbai dominates the national landscape, accounting for 52% of India’s operational capacity, reinforcing its position as the country’s leading data centre hub.
2.APAC Region Overview:
i.APAC is home to 10 of the world’s top 30 data centre markets, and in 2024, the region added 1.6 Gigawatts (GW) of new operational capacity, bringing its total operational capacity to 12.2 GW.
ii.Around 14.4 GW of data centre capacity is currently under construction or in the planning stage across the APAC Region.
iii.The rising demand for data centres across the APAC Region is fuelled by the rollout of 5G networks, cloud adoption contributing to 54% of user demand, increasing AI workloads, and the expansion of Internet of Things (IoT) applications.
