Giriraj Singh launches online course app Matsya SetuUnion Minister for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, Giriraj Singh launched an Online Course Mobile App ‘Matsya Setu’ to spread latest freshwater aquaculture technologies to aqua farmers of India.

  • The app has been developed by ICAR-CIFA (Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Institute of Freshwater Aquaculture) with funding support from the National Fisheries Development Board (NFDB), Hyderabad.
  • Objective – To educate the fish farmers in India about the latest freshwater aquaculture technologies.

Key Points

i.The app will spearhead the Technology-led Aquaculture Development in India.

ii.It has species-wise/subject-wise self-learning online course modules which provide explanations on basic concepts, practical demonstrations on breeding, seed production, and grow-out culture of commercially important fishes.

  • It provides Better Management Practices to be followed in maintaining the soil & water quality and has a provision to enable farmers to ask doubts to experts.
  • Upon completion of each course module, an e-Certificate can be auto-generated.

Aquaculture in India

India is the 2nd largest country in aquaculture (which is topped by China) and ranks 3rd in fisheries production. It provides employment to around 14.5 million people and contributes to 1.07% of India’s total GDP.
