Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers launch ‘GAINS 2023’On May 22, 2023, Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) Ltd launched GAINS 2023’GRSE Accelerated Innovation Nurturing Scheme 2023′ in Kolkata, West Bengal (WB) to utilize the eco-system that tackles current and future challenges in the ship design and construction sector.

  • GAINS 2023 is a part of GRSE’s drive to identify and promote the development of innovative solutions towards technological advances in shipbuilding by Startups.

The scheme was launched by G Surya Prakash, Assistant Manager (Finance), GRSE in the presence of Minister of State (MoS) Rajeev Chandrasekha, Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY).

What is GAINS 2023?

‘GAINS 2023’ is a program to support and inspire new innovators, engineers, and designers in the field of shipbuilding in India. They have created a dedicated department to pursue this.

  • It aims to inspire them to think and innovate in the specific technology area of shipbuilding.

The shipyard also called a dockyard or boatyard is a place where ships are built and repaired.

GAINS 2023 Challenge:

The ‘GAINS 2023’ Challenge is a two-stage process that aims to generate a large pool of ideas, from which a few promising ones will be chosen and supported. In the initial stage, participants, including entities, firms, and individuals, need to submit concise written and illustrated entries.

  • It is to be executed as an “Open Innovation Challenge” scheme for firms/ entities/ individuals (who are Indian Citizens).
  • Artificial Intelligence in Shipbuilding; Renewable/Green Energy and Energy Efficiency; and Operational Efficiency Enhancement are the focus areas for GRSE and are the thematic areas of ‘GAINS 2023’ Challenge.’

i.Stage – I: In the first stage, participating entities/firms/individuals are required to submit short illustrated and written submissions with sufficient detail to clarify a required degree of understanding of the chosen problem/solution.

  • The submission of stage I will be closed on July 3, 2023.

ii.StageII:Shortlisted parties who have cleared Stage-I are required to submit Stage-II proposal (Project Report) with a detailed technical description of the proposals. It will be followed by interviews/presentations by the entity/firm.

  • These submissions should also include a rough estimate of cost and justification of the professional qualifications

Funding:

A sum of up to a maximum of Rs 5 Lakh each will be paid to firms/ entities against Stage-II submission based on evaluation by GRSE. Winners may be awarded contract. If the product is sold to other customers, a revenue sharing model will be worked out.

Note: GRSE delivered the first indigenous warship INS Ajay to the Indian Navy in 1961.
