Hills Dictator Subhash Ghisingh, the founder of Gorkha National Liberation Front (GNLF), passed away on January 29’2015 at a hospital in New Delhi following prolonged illness.  Ghising was a former Gorkha Rifles soldier and founded the GNLF in 1980.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and other leaders mourned his death and offered condolence to the bereaved family.

- Gorkhaland is a proposed state in India demanded by the people of Darjeeling hills and the people of Gorkha.Â
- Ghisingh led the GNLF to a violent movement for carving a separate Gorkhaland out of Bengal resulting in bloodbath in the Darjeeling Hills between 1986 and 1988.
- Till now two mass movements for Gorkhaland have taken place under the Gorkha National Liberation Front (1986–1988) and Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (2007–till date).
- The demand for a separate administrative region has existed since 1907.
