In June 2025, former Indian Cricket Team Captain Mahendra Singh (MS) Dhoni was inducted into the International Cricket Council (ICC) Hall of Fame in the Class of 2025 during a special ceremony held at Abbey Road Studios in London, the United Kingdom (UK).
- MS Dhoni was among 7 international cricketers (5 men and 2 women) who joined the ICC Hall of Fame such as: Graeme Smith and Hashim Amla (South Africa), Matthew Hayden (Australia), Daniel Vettori (New Zealand), Sana Mir (Pakistan) and Sarah Taylor (England).
- With this, the total number of ICC Hall of Fame inductees reaches to 122.
About MS Dhoni:
i.MS Dhoni, fondly known as ‘Captain Cool’ due to his nonchalant demeaour on the field, now becomes the 11th Indian and 9th Indian male cricketer to join the prestigious list of international cricketers.
- He now joins some of the legendary Indian cricketers who are already part of this list: Sunil Gavaskar, Sachin Tedulkar, Rahul Dravid, Virendra Sehwag, among others.
- Last year, former Indian spinner Neetu Lawrence David became the 2nd Indian women as well as 10th Indian who joined this group.
ii.MS Dhoni holds the record of only captain in cricket history to win all 3 ICC white-ball trophies i.e. India’s 1st T20 World Cup (2007), One Day International (ODI) World Cup (2011) and Champions Trophy (2013).
iii.He made his international debut in December 2004 during an ODI match against Bangladesh.
iv.Under his captaincy in December 2009, India claimed the Number (No.) 1 spot in the ICC Men’s Test team rankings for the 1st time since its inception in 2003.
v.He is also the 3rd most successful wicketkeeper in cricket history with 829 dismissals from 608 innings, including 634 catches and 195 stumpings.
vi.He scored over 10,000 runs at an average of 50.57, including 10 centuries (100s) and 73 fifties (50s) in 350 ODIs.
- Also, he played 90 Test matches, scoring 4,876 runs at an average of just over 38, including 6 100s and 300 wicketkeeping dismissals.
About Other Important Inductees:
i.Former Pakistan’s women cricket team captain, Sana Mir became the 1st woman from Pakistan to be included in the ICC Hall of Fame.
- During her 15 year long cricket career which included 8 years as captain, Mir took total 150 wickets in 121 ODIs and 89 wickets in 106 T20Is, scoring 1630 and 820 runs respectively.
- Under Mir’s captaincy, Pakistan won two Asian Gold medals in 2010 and 2014.
ii.Two-time Cricket World Cup winner, Sarah Taylor became the 6th female England cricketer as well as the 1st female wicketkeeper from any country, to be inducted in the list eminent international cricketers.
- Taylor scored over 6,500 runs across all 3 formats of cricket, and most remarkably made 104 stumpings in 226 international appearances.
Note: As part of the ICC’s centennial year celebrations, the ICC and Federation of International Cricketers Association (FICA) jointly established the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame on 2nd January, 2009.
- According to ICC Hall of Fame eligibility criteria, players can only be inducted five years after retirement from international cricket
