FISU World University Games 2023: India finishes with 26 Medals

FISU World University Games 2023India finished 7th with 26 medals (11 gold,  5 silver and 10 bronze) at 31st edition of the Fédération Internationale du Sport Universitaire (FISU) World University Games 2023 held in Chengdu, Sichuan province, China, from 28th July to 8th August 2023.

  • China finished 1st in the medal tally with 178 medals(103 gold, 40silver and 35bronze).
  • FISU World University Games, formerly known as ‘Universiade’ was organised by International University Sports Federation.

Highlights:

i.Rifle shooter Aishwary Pratap Singh Tomar won 4 medals including gold medals in Men’s 10m air rifle, Men’s 50m rifle 3P, and Men’s 10m air rifle team along with Arjun Babuta and Divyansh Singh Panwar.

  • He also won a bronze medal in Men’s 50m rifle 3P team along with Sartaj Singh Tiwana and Surya Pratap Singh.

ii.The 2018 Youth Olympic Games champion Manu Bhaker won two gold medals in the Women’s 10m air pistol and in the Women’s 10m air pistol team along with Abhidnya Ashok Patil and Yashaswini Singh Deswal.

iii.Aman Saini and Pragati won the gold medal in the Archery mixed compound team event.

  • Aman Saini also won the bronze in the men’s compound and Men’s compound team along with Rishab Yadav and Sangampreet Singh Bisla.

iv.National Record: Jyothi Yarraji won the bronze medal in the women’s 100m hurdles and set a new national record with a timing of 12.78 seconds in the women’s-only 100m hurdles.

v.Yamini Mourya won the bronze medal in Judo in women’s 57kg.

  • This marks India’s first-ever judo medal at the World University Games.

About FISU World University Games 2023:

i.The FISU World University Games 2023 featured a total of 269 medal events across 18 different sports.

ii.Around 230 Indian athletes participated and competed in 11 sports – archery, athletics, badminton, fencing, judo, shooting, swimming, table tennis, taekwondo, tennis, and volleyball.

  • The Wushu team was also expected to compete but was withdrawn later due to the stapled visas issued by the Chinese authorities to the players from India’s Arunachal Pradesh.

Note:

The 2023 edition of the Games was originally scheduled to take place from August 16 to 27, 2021. Due to Covid-19 and the clash of dates with the Tokyo Olympics, it was postponed to 2022 and further to 2023 due to the pandemic.

The Chengdu 2021 Games has replaced the 2023 Games that was to place in Yekaterinburg(Russia), who were stripped of the hosting rights after Russia’s attack on Ukraine.

Next Edition:

i.The 32nd FISU World University Games 2025 is set to be held in Rhine-Ruhr, Germany from 16th July to 27th July 2025.

ii.The 2025 FISU World University Games  winter is set to be held in Torino, Italy from 13th to 23rd January 2025.

  • The 2023 FISU World University Games Winter held in Lake Placid, New York, United States of America(USA) from 12th to 22nd January 2023.

India’s Previous Performance in FISU:

The 2023 Chengdu FISU World University Games is the best performance for India so far.

i.FISU World University Games is a biennial multi-sport event and India has been participating since the inaugural edition at Turin, Italy in 1959.

ii.Previously, India gave its best in Gwangju,South Korea in 2015, where Indian athletes won 5 medals – 1 gold, 1 silver, and 3 bronze.

iii.India won 4 medals (1 gold, 1 silver, and 2 bronze) at the 30th edition held in Naples, Italy.
