6 Organizations – International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO), UNICEF (United Nations Children’s Fund) India, Federation of Obstetric and Gynaecological Societies of India (FOGSI), Pregnancy and Obesity Nutrition Initiative (PONI), Alive & Thrive, Nutrition International and ARTIST for Her (Asian Research & Training Institute for Skill Transfer) have partnered to strengthen the implementation of the POSHAN (Prime Minister’s Overarching Scheme for Holistic Nutrition) Abhiyaan.

All the organizations will meet each month to deliberate on implementing best practices among clinicians to improve nutritional outcomes for children, pregnant women & nursing mothers.

POSHAN Abhiyaan:

POSHAN Abhiyaan also known as National Nutrition Mission was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 8 March, 2018 (International Women’s Day) from Jhunjhunu in Rajasthan. NITI Aayog has played a critical role in shaping the POSHAN Abhiyaan.

Objective:

i.To improve nutritional outcomes for Children (0-6 years), Pregnant Women and Lactating mothers in a time bound manner with fixed targets.

ii.It aims to bring stunting of children in age groups of 0-6 years from 38.4% to 25% by 2022.

The main pillars of Implementation for POSHAN Abhiyaan are:

  • Inter-sectoral convergence for better service delivery
  • Use of Information & Communication Technology (ICT) for real time growth monitoring and tracking of women and children.
  • Intensified health and nutrition services for the First 1000 days.
  • Jan Andolan or People’s Participation.

Andhra Pradesh tops in Implementation:

As per the September, 2019 progress report of NITI Aayog ‘Transforming Nutrition in India: POSHAN Abhiyaan’ Andhra Pradesh (AP) ranked 1st in the country for overall implementation of the POSHAN Abhiyaan scheme.

i.AP trained all Angan Wadi Workers on modules created based on lifecycle approach, i.e first 1000 days of life, with the support of incremental learning Approach (ILA).

ii.It gave smartphones to all 55,607 angan wadi workers to improve service delivery and for reporting day to day actions, and to counsel the targeted beneficiaries through video embedded in applications.
