On December 20, 2019, Former High Court Judge CV Ramulu has been appointed as the Lokayukta in Telangana. His order was issued by Telangana governor Dr.Tamilisai Sounderarajan with immediate effect. Apart from CV Ramulu, Former law secretary V Niranjan Rao has been appointed as Upa Lokayukta.G Chandraiah- new SHRC chief:
Former judge Justice G Chandraiah was appointed as Chairman of the State Human Rights Commission (SHRC). He succeeded Nisar Ahmad Kakru, who was the last SHRC chairman in Telangana and the post was left vacant after his retirement in 2016.
Key Points:
i.Other appointments: N. Anand Rao and Mohammed Irfan Moinuddin were also appointed as members of the SHRC.
ii.It is the 1st time the state government has constituted the Lokayukta and Human Rights Commission since the formation of the state in 2014.
iii.The appointment was made by a 4-member committee headed by chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao.
iv.It is also to be noted that recently on December 13, 2019, the state government issued the ordinance amending the Telangana Lokayukta Act 1983 and Protection of HR Act 1993 to deal with non-availability of retired chief justices and appointing retired judges of the HC to head both the institutions.
v.Lokayukta: The Lokayukta is an anti-corruption ombudsman organization in the Indian states.
