On the lines of circular economy principles, the BBMP (Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike) has collaborated with the European Union (EU) for a low-carbon Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) management system in Bengaluru (Karnataka) under Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Actions (NAMA) support project ‘Waste solutions for a circular economy in India’.
- The project is funded by the EU and the German’s Federal Ministry of the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU).
- Under this collaboration, BBMP will get technical and financial support in setting up new plants, revamping the existing Material Recovery Facilities (MRFs), setting up compost facilities and biomethanation plants.
Key Points:
i.The project will also support in creating a role-model source segregation system through citizen engagement, and integrating the informal sector in Bengaluru by conducting campaigns on environmental pollution and health risks and facilitating availability of low-carbon solutions.
ii.Bengaluru is one of the five lighthouse cities chosen for the NAMA Support project funded under the NAMA Facility.
- Other locations include Goa, Tiruchirappalli (Tamil Nadu), Varanasi (Uttar Pradesh), and the North Delhi Municipal Corporation.
iii.The Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change (MoEFCC) is the nodal Ministry of NAMA Support project and the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) is the implementation partner.
iv.The project will help reduce Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions, landfill space and lead to improved recovery of resources.
What is a circular economy?
In the linear economy, raw natural resources are taken, transformed into products and disposed of. On the other hand, in a circular economy, materials for new products come from old products. Nearly everything is reused, or remanufactured.
