Bhupender Yadav, Union Minister of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, released the Elephant & Tiger Population Estimation Protocol on the occasion of the World Elephant Day 2021 (12th August), which was celebrated at Indira ParyavaranBhawan, New Delhi.
- This protocol is to be adopted in the All India elephant and tiger population estimation exercise in 2022.
- For the first time, The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) is converging Elephant and Tiger population estimation exercise.
Release of 4th Edition of Trumpet:
Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav, along with Minister of State of MoEFCCAshwini Kumar Choubey released the 4th edition of the quarterly newsletter “Trumpet”.
- It is published by Project Elephant Division, under the MoEFCC and Elephant Cell, Wildlife Institute of India(WII), An Autonomous Institution of the MoEFCC.
- The 4th edition of Trumpet highlights the need for a landscape approach for synchronised elephant population enumeration.
Key Points:
i.Union Minister Bhupender Yadav highlighted the importance of the involvement of local and indigenous people in the conservation of the elephants and the bottom-up approach will support the minimization of Human-Elephant conflict.
ii.TheMoEFCC also partnered with the WII, National Museum of Natural History (NMNH), World Wide Fund for Nature(WWF)-India and Wildlife Trust of India(WTI) has organised the week-long programme of “AzaadikaAmritMahotsav” as a precursor for World Elephant Day 2021.
Asian Elephants:
i.Most of the elephant range countries except India have lost their elephant population due to loss of habitats and poaching for illegal trade of tusks.
ii.At present the Asian elephants are listed as “Endangered” on the International Union for Conservation of Nature(IUCN) Red List of threatened species.
iii.It is estimated that there are around 50000 to 60000 Asian elephants and around 60 % of the population are in India.
iv.At the Conference of Parties of CMS 13 held at Gandhi Nagar, Gujarat in February 2020, the Indian elephants have been listed in Appendix I of the Convention of the Migratory species.

- He also released the report ‘Status of Leopards, Co-predators and Megaherbivores-2018’ and the special edition of ‘STRIPES’ quarterly newsletter of the National Tiger Conservation Authority’s (NTCA).
