1. – Indigent
Meaning – poor; needy.
Usage – “a charity for the relief of indigent artists”
Synonyms – poor, impecunious, destitute, penniless, impoverished, poverty-stricken, down and out, pauperized, without a penny to one’s name, without two farthings/pennies to rub together; insolvent, ruined; needy, in need, in want, hard up, on the breadline, hard-pressed, in reduced/straitened circumstances, deprived, disadvantaged, distressed, badly off; beggarly etc.
2. – Pernicious
Meaning – having a harmful effect, especially in a gradual or subtle way.
Usage – “the pernicious influences of the mass media”
Synonyms – harmful, damaging, destructive, injurious, hurtful, detrimental, deleterious, dangerous, adverse, inimical, unhealthy, unfavourable, bad, evil, baleful, wicked, malign, malevolent, malignant etc.
3. – Bolster
Meaning –a long, thick pillow that is placed under other pillows for support.
Usage –”most of them were sitting on the floor which was strewn with cushions, bolsters, and rugs.”
Synonyms – pillow, cushion, pad, support, rest etc .
4. – Ideologue
Meaning – an adherent of an ideology, especially one who is uncompromising and dogmatic.
Usage – “a right-wing ideologue”
5. – Onslaughts
Meaning – a fierce or destructive attack.
Usage – “a series of onslaughts on the citadel”
Synonyms – assault, attack, offensive, aggression, advance, charge, onrush, rush, storming, sortie, sally, raid, descent, incursion, invasion, foray, push, thrust, drive, blitz, bombardment etc.
6. – Scrapheap
Meaning – a pile of discarded materials or articles.
Usage – “cars on a scrapheap”
7. – Apropos
Meaning – with reference to; concerning.
Usage – “she remarked apropos of the initiative, ‘It’s not going to stop the abuse’”
Synonyms – with reference to, with regard to, with respect to, regarding, concerning, respecting, on the subject of, in the matter of, touching on, dealing with etc.
8. – Malafide
Meaning – in bad faith; with intent to deceive.
Usage – “a malafide abuse of position”
9. – Foster
Meaning – encourage the development of (something, especially something desirable).
Usage – “the teacher’s task is to foster learning”
Synonyms – encourage, promote, further, stimulate, advance, forward, cultivate, nurture, strengthen, enrich, help, aid, abet, assist, contribute to, support, endorse, champion etc .
10. – Vandalise
Meaning – deliberately destroy or damage (public or private property).
Usage – “stations have been vandalized beyond recognition”
