  1. Glean – बीनना

Meaning – obtain (information) from various sources, often with difficulty.

Synonyms – obtain, get, take, draw, derive, extract, cull, garner, gather, reap; select, choose, pick; learn, find out.

Usage – the information is gleaned from press cuttings.

2. Maim – अपंग कर देना

Meaning – wound or injure (a person or animal) so that part of the body is permanently damaged.

Synonyms – injure, wound, hurt, disable, put out of action, incapacitate, impair, mar, mutilate, lacerate, disfigure, deform, mangle.

Usage – 100,000 soldiers were killed or maimed.

3. Necromancy – काला जादू

Meaning – the supposed practice of communicating with the dead, especially in order to predict the future.

Usage – alchemy, necromancy, and other magic practices.

4. Grumpy – क्रोधी

Meaning – bad-tempered and sulky.

Synonyms – bad-tempered, ill-tempered, short-tempered, crotchety, crabby, crabbed, tetchy, testy, waspish, prickly, peppery, touchy, irritable, irascible, crusty, cantankerous, curmudgeonly, bearish, surly, churlish, ill-natured, ill-humoured, peevish, cross, as cross as two sticks, fractious, disagreeable, pettish; having got out of bed on the wrong side; informalgrouchy, snappy, snappish, chippy, on a short fuse, short-fused; informalshirty, stroppy.

5. Bellicose – लड़ाकू

Meaning – demonstrating aggression and willingness to fight.

Synonyms – belligerent, aggressive, hostile, threatening, antagonistic, pugnacious, truculent, confrontational, argumentative, quarrelsome, disputatious, contentious, militant, combative; quick-tempered, hot-tempered, ill-tempered, bad-tempered, irascible, captious.

Usage – a mood of bellicose jingoism.

6. Pensive – चिंताग्रस्त

Meaning – engaged in, involving, or reflecting deep or serious thought.

Synonyms – thoughtful, thinking, reflective, contemplative, musing, meditative, introspective, prayerful, philosophical, cogitative, ruminative, absorbed, engrossed, rapt, preoccupied, deep/immersed/lost in thought, in a brown study, broody, serious, studious, solemn, dreamy, dreaming; wistful, brooding, melancholy.

Usage – a pensive mood.

7. Covenant – वाचा

Meaning – an agreement.

Synonyms – contract, compact, treaty, pact, accord, deal, bargain, settlement, concordat, protocol, entente, agreement, arrangement, understanding, pledge, promise, bond, indenture, guarantee, warrant; undertaking, commitment.

Usage – there was a covenant between them that her name was never to be mentioned.

8. Raunchy – घटिया

Meaning – shabby or grubby.

Usage – the restaurant’s style is raunchy and the sanitation chancy.

9. Apogee – पराकाष्ठा

Meaning – the highest point in the development of something; a climax or culmination.

Usage – a film which was the apogee of German expressionist cinema.

10. Savant – पंडित

Meaning – a learned person, especially a distinguished scientist.

Synonyms – intellectual, scholar, sage, philosopher, thinker, learned person, wise person, Solomon; guru, master, authority; mahatma, maharishi.

Usage – Sir Isaiah Berlin, the Oxford savant.
