England all-rounder Ben Stokes announces retirement from ODI cricket

The New-Zealand born English cricketer, 31-year-old Ben Stokes (full name: Benjamin Andrew Stokes), Captain of the England Test team, has announced his retirement from the One Day Internationals(ODIs) format after England’s first ODI match against South Africa on 19th July 2022 in Seat Unique Riverside Ground, Chester-le-Street, Durham, England.

  • He played his 105th and final ODI against South Africa in Durham.

Note:

After Eoin Morgan’s retirement, Ben Stokes is the 2nd player from England’s 2019 World Cup-winning squad to retire from ODIs in the last month.

About Ben Stokes:

i.Ben Stokes made his ODI and Twenty20 (T20) International debuts in 2011, and his Test debut in 2013.

ii.He has played 104 ODI matches for England and scored 2919 runs at an average of 39.45.

iii.He played a major role in England winning their first 50-over International Cricket Council (ICC) Cricket World Cup in 2019.

iv.He first played in the Indian Premier League(IPL) in 2017 representing the Rising Pune Supergiants and became the Most Valuable Player of the edition, scoring 316 runs and picking 12 wickets. He has also represented Rajasthan Royals in the IPL 2018 season.

v.Stokes was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the 2020 New Year Honours for services to cricket. He was named the Wisden Leading Cricketer in the World in both the 2020 and 2021 editions of the Almanack.

  • The honour comes after Stokes was named leading cricketer in the world in the 2020 edition, having guided England to their maiden World Cup title in 2019

Bangladeshi Cricketer Tamim Iqbal Announces Retirement from T20 Internationals

Bangladeshi Cricketer Tamim Iqbal (33 years old), the current captain of Bangladesh in ODIs has announced his retirement from T20 International with effect from 16th July 2022.

He announced his retirement after the conclusion of the ODI series against the West Indies National Cricket Team. He also won the Player of the Series Award for his performance in the 3-match ODI series.

  • He has played around 78 T20 International and scored 1758 runs. He played his last T20 International in March 2020 against Zimbabwe in Mirpur, Pakistan.
  • So far, he has scored 5,082 runs in Tests and 7,943 runs in ODIs.
