Dr. Neeraj Mittal, Chairman of the Digital Communications Commission and Secretary of the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) under the Ministry of Communications (MoC), launched the “Bharat 5G Portal– an integrated portal” during the ‘Bharat Telecom 2024 – An Exclusive International Business Expo.’
- The event was organized by the Telecom Equipment and Services Export Promotion Council (TEPC) in collaboration with DoT, took place in Delhi from January 29-30, 2024.
Note: India has the 2nd largest telecom network in the world.
The integrated Bharat 5G Portal:
i.The Bharat 5G Portal is an integrated portal, serves as a comprehensive platform for startups, industry, and academia in quantum, 6G, Intellectual property rights (IPR), Pilot/Proof of Concepts (POCs), and 5G domains.
ii.The portal captures academic R&D developments, industry standards, Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), startups/MSMEs, and subject matter experts.
iii.It includes the Future Tech-Experts registration portal in collaboration with PANIIT USA, aimed at helping and advising the Indian Telecom ecosystem to advance the goal of Atmanirbhar Bharat.
Aim: The portal aims to propel India’s 5G capabilities, fostering innovation, collaboration, and knowledge-sharing within the telecom sector.
DoT’s Call for 6G R&D Proposals:
As part of the portal’s initiatives, DoT issued a call for 6G Research and Development (R&D) proposals on the integrated portal, accelerating research in 6G ecosystem development.
Other Launch:
Dr. Neeraj Mittal also launched the Future Tech-Experts registration portal in collaboration with PanIIT Alumni India – United States of America (Pan IIT USA) to support and guide the Indian Telecom ecosystem.
- This initiative will be prominently featured on the Bharat 5G Portal.
Note:
- Pan IIT is an umbrella organization, representing alumni network of all Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) system.
- PANIIT USA is the official association of all IIT alumni residing in the USA.
Key Points:
i.In October 2023, during the inaugural ceremony of the 7th edition of the India Mobile Congress (IMC), Prime Minister Narendra Modi awarded 100 “5G Use Case Labs” to foster competencies in 5G technologies in educational institutions across India.
ii.These labs/institutions, connected through a dedicated portal (Digital network of 100 5G Labs), act as a knowledge dissemination platform for testing and developing 5G use cases.
- Telecommunications Consultants India Limited (TCIL) is the implementation agency for the installation of these 100 labs and portal development.
Recent related News:
India’s 1st Telecom Centre of Excellence (CoE) will be established at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee campus in Saharanpur, Uttar Pradesh (UP). The UP Government will fund around Rs. 30 crore for its establishment.
