Artificial intelligence and its impact on society
The ability to invent intelligent machines has fascinated humans since the ancient times. Researchers are creating systems and programs that could mimic human thoughts and try doing things that human could do. In layman terms, AI,as the name suggests, can be called machines with human-like intelligence that are smart and efficient. In sophisticated terms ,it is the science and technology which is based on regiments like Computer Science, Biology, Psychology, Linguistics, Mathematics, and Engineering. And the main focus of AI is to bring in advancement to computer functions associated with human intelligence, which includes reasoning, learning, and problem-solving. Thus , AI is not just about robotics and automation. Almost every sector today has the scope of usage of Artificial intelligence in their operations and development. Manufacturing, logistics, services, retail, banking, healthcare, gaming, robotics etc; there’s not a field where one doesn’t see AI playing a vital role in near future. There are many factors attributing to its appeal. Since, AI technologies are smart and efficient, they help in error reduction giving better precision, can be used for exploring areas which are otherwise difficult for humans, act as digital assistants with several applications in various activities that ease human lives.
But even with such positives, doubts have been cast over negatives of AI. Fisrt, costs involved In AI are quite high as they are very complex machines. No matter how advanced they become, they can never replicate human’s creativity and emotions. As AI becomes increasingly embedded it is likely to cause disruption in the way we live and work especially increasing unemployment(as a result of automation). It is predicted that half of the structured and repeatable jobs will be automated in work places by 2024. About 20% of IT and knowledge workers will have AI infused software. Both of these on one hand reduce the workforce, on the other hand exponentially increases the work efficiency. AI is also playing an increasing role in political activities. In China AI is now being used for political suppression with racial profiling of certain sections of society. It would be no surprise to see AI being used in manufacturing more sophisticated and lethal wepons in near future.
There is no doubt that AI will transform society, but there is a big need to have suitable safeguards against its improper use. It will require far greater collaboration between the governments, society leaders and technology experts and other stakeholders. If used holistically, human race will continue to reap rich benefits of this technology, rather than being subservient of the smart machines of the future.
