Keeping animals in the zoo is like keeping them in prison for our pleasure.
In an era where Planet Earth shows all the animals in their natural habitat , with proper explanation and narration and above all with a dramatic art , do we really need to see animals in a captivated state. Zoos are premises for the confinement of animals, with the intention of studying the animals and exhibiting them to the public at large. Animals are equally precious and should equally share earth as humans instead of being caged like they are in jail. It might happen that animals natural instincts will vanish if they are caged in zoos. Some animals are forced to live in climates that they are not acquainted to and this is harsh. For example, the elephant is accustomed to live in tropical climates but is forced to live in zoos in cold countries like Canada.
The ones advocating for zoos state that they are beneficial both to the animals themselves, protecting endangered species with specific breeding programs, and the public, as an educational tool to increase both awareness and understanding. The opponents respond that the removal of wild animals from their habitat is not good, they should be left in their own natural surroundings and not used as tools for public entertainment.
The animals are forced to live in an unnatural habitat. There is not enough living space in the zoos, which makes animals restless. It is also true that, some animals do not proliferate in zoos. Animals are physically and mentally strong in their own habitats like forests etc rather than in zoos. They are able to run around and hunt in larger land spaces in the wilderness. Zoos do not have such large spaces , they are confined to a certain place and do not have movement. They can neither explore outside their cage nor go for hunting. The entire process seems stagnant.
The zoos cater to the public at large by entertaining them by showcasing animals who are in an agitated mood. The public only wants their enjoyment irrespective that even animals have feelings. It also depends on how an animal feels inside a cage 24 x 7. Can we expect a human being to live like that ? Therefore , efforts should be made to make forests and natural habitats safe. There should be minimization of zoos until and unless there is danger to species.
