Nizamuddin Basti project wins two UNESCO heritage awards

Nizamuddin Revival Project, India’s project on the holistic urban revitalisation of the historic Nizamuddin Basti community, in New Delhi, Delhi has won the UNESCO Asia-Pacific Awards for Cultural Heritage Conservation 2021 under 2 categories: Award of Excellence and Special Recognition for Sustainable Development.

About Nizamuddin Basti:

i.The settlement around the tomb of Noted Sufi saint Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya, who settled in a Delhi village Ghiyaspur located on the tributary of River Yamuna, is known as the Hazrat Nizamuddin Basti.

ii.The Nizamuddin area comprises the Humayun’s Tomb, Hazrat Nizamuddin Basti and Sunder Nursery, Batashewala Tomb-Garden Complex, the tomb of courtier poet Khan I Khanan ‘Rahim’, and the Mughal-period caravanserai of Azimganj Serai.

  • The urban renewal project started in 2007 was undertaken by the Aga Khan Trust for Culture (AKTC) in partnership with South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC), Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), Delhi Urban Heritage Foundation and dargah committee and resident groups of Hazrat Nizamuddin Basti.

About Nizamuddin Basti project:

i.The Nizamuddin Basti project has overcome the major socio-economic challenges and improved health, education and well-being, particularly for women and youth through an innovative People-Public-Private Partnership model.

ii.The project involves the meticulous restoration of over 20 historic monuments clustered around the 14th-century mausoleum of the revered Sufi saint, Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya.

Winners of UNESCO Asia-Pacific Awards for Cultural Heritage Conservation 2021:

The jury of Heritage experts honoured 9 projects from 6 countries (Bangladesh, China, India, Japan, Malaysia, and Thailand) with the UNESCO Asia-Pacific Awards for Cultural Heritage Conservation 2021.

About UNESCO Asia-Pacific Awards for Cultural Heritage Conservation:

The UNESCO Asia-Pacific Awards for Cultural Heritage Conservation is annually presented to acknowledge exemplary efforts by individuals and organizations to restore or conserve structures, places and properties of heritage value in the region.

  • Since 2000, the award has recognized 275 winners from 22 countries.

The Award-winning projects will receive one bronze plaque and a certificate of recognition.
