Delhi Govt. Establishes India’s First E-waste Eco Park; Government Signs MoU with IIIT-D for Improving Urban Mobility

India's-first-e-waste-eco-park-to-be-established-in-Holambi-Kalan-in-Delhi

Gopal Rai, Delhi’s Minister for Environment, Forest & Wildlife announced the development of India’s first e-waste eco-park in Holambi Kalan (North West Delhi, Delhi), in an area of about 21 acres.
E-waste eco park: 
  • An 11-member steering committee has been formed for the development of the e-waste eco park.
  • Delhi State Industrial and Infrastructure Development Corporation (DSIIDC) will be the implementing agency of this development.

Key Highlights:

i.Delhi is the 5th largest producer of e-waste in India, after Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal. Delhi produces around 2 lakh tones every year, which can also be equated to 9.5 percent of the total amount of e-waste produced in India.

ii.Out of this total e-waste only 5 percent are properly recycled and the e-waste eco park will be developed to dismantle, refurbish, recycle the e-wastes scientifically and environment friendly.

Delhi Government Signs MoU with IIIT-D for Improving Urban Mobility

On 13th July 2022 Delhi’s transport department signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Indraprastha Institute of Information Technology Delhi (IIIT-D) to conduct research and develop technologies to improve urban mobility in Delhi.

  • This MoU was signed by Vinod Kumar Yadav, Deputy Commissioner (Transport) and Ashok Kumar Solanki, Registrar (IIIT-D) in the presence of Ashish Kundra, Commissioner of Transport, O.P. Mishra, Special Commissioner (Transport) and Ranjan Bose, Director and Professor (IIIT-D).
Features of the MoU: 
i.Under this MoU, both Delhi transport department and IIIT Delhi will work towards solving problems and building solutions in the field of urban transportation and sustainable development.
ii.This partnership will support Delhi to make developments and achieve more in smart and reliable transport.

ii.The centre for sustainable mobility (CSM) was also launched which will serve as a gateway in identifying problems in transportation and promote start-ups in the field of passenger information systems, multi-modal journey planners, automation tools, and ticketing frameworks.

About the CSM:
The CSM will also support Delhi’s transport department to identify problem areas and define a technology roadmap toward solving problems of urban mobility in Delhi.
  • The centre will allow train and undertake capacity building of Transport staff, the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) and Delhi Transport Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (DTIDC) on technical skills.
  • The IIIT-D will conduct research and develop technologies for new infrastructure in transport. At present, there are 8 researchers and faculty members associated with the centre.
  • Background In April 2021, The Delhi government in collaboration with Delhi Knowledge Development Foundation provided one-time grant for addressing problems in urban transportation.
