On 11th June 2020, The Deccan Development Society(DDS), Hyderabad Based non-governmental organisation won the Biodiversity award 2020 and a grant of 40000 Euros (approx. Rs. 35 Lakhs) of the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation for the contribution of DDS women in rehabilitation of degraded lands and to promote biodiversity.
Background:
i.The award was announced in a teleconference by Olivier Wenden, Vice President and CEO of the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation.
ii.The award is given to recognise the individuals for their actions and the organisations for their contribution in preserving the planet in the three priority areas of the foundation
- Limiting the effects of climate change
- Preserving biodiversity
- Water resource management and combat desertification
Works of DDS:
i.The non-governmental Indian agri-based organisation works in 75 villages with women Sanghams in the Sangareddy District of Telangana.
ii.DDS works to achieve Autonomy in Production of food, Seeds, Natural resources, market and media.
Awards:
DDS received the Equator Award 2019 of United Nations Development Program(UNDP) and Shining World Protection Awards for “its noble, gracious and loving efforts to improve our world”
The Other Winners:
The Climate Change Award – Professor John Rockström, Director of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Change Effects.
The Water Award – International Water Management Institute(IWMI), Sri Lanka.
