The United Nations (UN’s) Day of the Seafarer (DotS) also known as the International Day of the Seafarer is annually observed across the globe on June 25 to recognize the vital contribution played by seafarers in facilitating international maritime trade and supporting the global economy.
- June 25, 2025 marks the 15th edition of the DotS.
- The annual observance of the day is led by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), a specialized UN agency based in London, United Kingdom (UK).
2025 Campaign:
The campaign for DotS 2025 is “My Harassment-Free Ship”.
- This initiative is focused on cultivating a culture of respect across the maritime industry and emphasizes a policy of zero tolerance towards bullying and harassment at sea.
Background:
i.The Day of the Seafarer was established through resolutions adopted at a diplomatic conference held in Manila, Philippines, from 21 to 25 June 2010.
- This conference finalized the Manila Amendments to the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW Convention).
- Resolution 2 from this conference proclaimed 25 June of every year as the Day of the Seafarer.
- The 2010 Manila Amendments themselves entered into force worldwide on 1 January 2012 under the tacit acceptance procedure.
ii.The first observance of DotS took place on 25 June 2011.
iii.It is recognized by the UN as an observance day.
Why June 25?
The date 25 June was specifically chosen to commemorate the adoption date of the Manila Amendments to the STCW Convention in 2010. These amendments significantly updated international standards for seafarer training and welfare.
- The original STCW Convention was adopted at an international conference in London, UK, on 7 July 1978 and entered into force globally in 1984.
Who is a Seafarer?
i.A seafarer is defined as an individual employed to serve aboard any type of marine vessel, including deck officers, engineers, and support staff.
ii.Their duties involve critical tasks ranging from navigation and engine maintenance to safety procedures and cargo management.
iii.Today, around 2 million seafarers facilitate the safe transportation of over 80% of global trade volume, transporting critical supplies like food, fuel and medicine.
Interactive World Map:
A key highlight of the 2025 campaign is the launch of an Interactive World Map, showcasing flag-wise resources to help seafarers report and address harassment at sea, including policies, support services, and reporting channels globally.
