World Day for International Justice 2022 - July 17

The Day of Criminal Justice is annually observed across the globe by the International Criminal Court (ICC) on 17th July to recognise the efforts of organisations working towards bringing justice to international criminal acts like crimes against humanity, genocide, war crimes and crimes of aggression.

Highlights:

i.This day is also known as World day of International Justice and International Criminal Justice Day.

ii.Various campaigns and events will be conducted on this day around the world and activists, journalists, and media would help in promoting this day.

Background:

In 1998, around 120 countries signed to adopt the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court (ICC) that came into force on 1st July 2002.

  • In 2010, the commemoration of World Day for International Justice was decided at the review conference of Rome Statue held at Kampala, Uganda.

About International Criminal Court (ICC):

i.The ICC was the world’s first permanent International Criminal Court and is also the court of last resort to prosecute the most heinous offences in cases where national courts fail to act.
ii.Unlike the International court of Justice (ICJ) which solves disputes between states, ICC investigates and tries crimes of individuals.
