Defence Ministry clears arms procurement worth Rs 28 thousand 732 crore for Army

On July 26, 2022, the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) headed by Union Minister Rajnath Singh, Ministry of Defence (MoD) approved Arms procurement proposals worth Rs.28,732 crore under Buy Indian Indigenously Designed, Developed and Manufactured (IDDM) and Buy Indian Categories.

  • This approval will provide further boost to AtmaNirbharta in Defence.

Note: The Acceptance of Necessity (AoN) is only the beginning of the acquisition process; it can take anywhere from five to fifteen years for an AoN to become a contract and for military equipment and platforms to be delivered.

The Following Arms received Approval from DAC:

i.Bullet Proof Jackets

DAC accorded Acceptance of Necessity (AoN) for Bullet Proof Jackets with BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards) VI level of protection. This will cater to the demand of enhanced protection against the threat of enemy snippers to Indian troops deployed along the Line of Control (LoC), and during close combat operations in counter-terrorism.

ii.Close Quarter Battle Carbines

DAC also accorded AoN for induction of approximately four lakhs of Close Quarter Battle Carbines for the Services.  It will combat the current complex pattern of conventional and hybrid warfare and counter-terrorism at the LAC (Line of Actual Control) and Eastern Borders. This will provide a major impetus to the small arms manufacturing industry in India.

iii.Autonomous Surveillance and Armed Drone Swarms

AoN for procurement of Autonomous Surveillance and Armed Drone Swarms has been accorded by the DAC which will augment the Indian Army’s capability in modern warfare.

iv.DAC also approved the Indian Navy’s proposal to procure an upgraded 1250 KiloWatt (KW) capacity Marine Gas Turbine Generator for power generation application onboard Kolkata class of ships through Indian Industry. This will provide major boost to the indigenous manufacturing of gas turbine generators.

v.To enhance the security in the coastal region of the Country, DAC also approved the proposal of procurement of 14 Fast Patrol Vessels (FPVs) for the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) under the Buy Indian-IDDM category.
