Skill India partners with Airbnb to Upskill Hospitality Entrepreneurs
On 28th November 2017, a tripartite MoU was signed between National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) and Tourism and Hospitality Sector Skill Council (THSC) with Airbnb.
Skill India partners with Airbnb:
i. The MoU will provide hospitality skills training to hospitality micro-entrepreneurs in India. The signing of this MoU is in line with the Government’s endeavor to promote entreprenuership under the Government’s Skill India Programme.
ii. This MoU aims to empower more citizens, including those in rural and underserved areas to join the ‘alternate accommodation’ sector and pursue new livelihood opportunities by sharing their homes.
iii. Under the terms of the MoU, the parties agree to:
1.Establish occupation standards and competency matrices for job roles and develop the courses for hospitality entrepreneurs
2.Create standards for certification and accreditation as per the requirements and global benchmarks of Tourism and Hospitality industry
3.Set the framework for long-term Council-Industry partnership
4.Strengthen the Skilled Labour Pool required by Tourism and Hospitality industry

PM Modi inaugurates Hyderabad Metro Rail
On November 28, 2017, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated 30 km-long, first phase of Hyderabad Metro Rail between Miyapur and Nagole, at Miyapur station.Inauguration of Hyderabad Metro Rail:
i. Post inauguration, PM Modi took a ride along with Telangana chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao in its maiden run.
ii. Minimum fare for a ride in Hyderabad Metro Rail is Rs 10 for two km and maximum fare is Rs 60 for the entire stretch. Initially, metro rail will be operational from 6 am to 10 pm for three months. Depending on the surge in traffic, timings will later be revised to 5.30 am to 11 pm.
iii. On completion, Hyderabad Metro Rail will be world’s largest public-private partnership (PPP) in metro rail sector.
iv. The project is being executed by Larsen & Toubro.
Manipur CM Biren Singh inaugurates India-Myanmar media interaction programme
On November 27, 2017, Manipur Chief Minister, N. Biren Singh inaugurated a two-day India-Myanmar media interaction programme in Imphal.

i. Eleven journalists from Myanmar are taking part in this interaction programme.
ii. From the Indian media side, Prakash Dubey of the Editors’ Guild of India and K. Nayar of the Press Council of India were present at this programme.
iii. This event was sponsored by the Manipur tourism department in collaboration with Information and Public Relations department and the state level committee of the Act East Policy.
iv. Mr. N Birnen Singh also announced that his government is trying to introduce a bus service between Manipur and Myanmar to bring the people closer.

First edition of INSPIRE 2017 kicked off in Jaipur
First edition of the International Symposium to Promote Innovation & Research in Energy Efficiency (INSPIRE 2017) begun in Jaipur, Rajasthan on November 27, 2017.More Information about INSPIRE 2017:
i. Five-day symposium, INSPIRE 2017 is being organized by Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL) in partnership with The World Bank, and Alliance for an Energy Efficient Economy (AEEE).
ii. INSPIRE 2017 brings together various stakeholders such as innovators, policy makers, financiers and experts to showcase best practices in the sector.
iii. During the course of this five-day symposium, experts from Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), The Energy Institute (TERI), The World Bank Group, International Energy Agency (IEA), and representatives of the Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM) will hold high level deliberations on various aspects of energy efficiency sector.
iv. Representatives from several global organizations like African Development Bank, Asian Development Bank, Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank, The World Bank and International Energy Agency will also share their perspectives at INSPIRE 2017.
India, Greece sign Air Services Agreement
On November 27, 2017, India and Greece signed an air services agreement in New Delhi.
i. The agreement was signed between Union External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Kotzias.
ii .Mr. Nikos Kotzias was on a three day visit to India from 25th – 27th November, 2017.
iii. Currently, there is no direct air connectivity between India and Greece. This air services agreement will allow Indian airlines to operate to Athens, Thessaloniki and Heraklion and accordingly Greek airlines will be able to start services to major Indian cities.
iv. Besides air services agreement, a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on cooperation in the field of new and renewable energy was also signed between India and Greece.
v. Ms. Sushma Swaraj and Mr. Nikos Kotzias also held detailed discussions on all aspects of the bilateral relationship.

Russia to help India set up crisis management centre
India and Russia have entered into an agreement under which, EMERCOM of Russia would cooperate with India in the establishment of the National Crisis Management Centre (NCMC) in India to handle disaster and other emergency situations.i. This cooperation was agreed during a meeting between Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh and Russian Minister for Emergency Situations Vladimir Puchkov in Moscow, Russia on November 28, 2017.
ii. Mr. Singh is on a three-day visit to Russia for strengthening bilateral cooperation in security sector.
iii. During this meeting, Mr. Singh and Mr. Puchkov, not only held discussion on cooperation in disaster management but also reviewed the progress made on the agreement on disaster management signed in 2010.
iv. Both the minsters also signed a joint implementation plan for 2018-19 for cooperation in disaster management.
v. During the course of this visit to Russia, Mr. Singh will also meet top Ministers and key officials of Russian Federation.

India to assist in strengthening transport system in Kabul
India will provide USD 2.87 million to Afghanistan for refurbishment (renovation) of 350 buses that will help in strengthening the public transport system of Kabul.

i. The Indian Embassy in Kabul said that, an MoU in this regard was signed by Manpreet Vohra, Indian ambassador to Afghanistan, and Afghan Transport Minister Hameed Tahmasi
ii. The Ministry of External Affairs said on twitter that, the 350 buses are expected to be operational by end of 2018.

Asian Development Bank to provide $20 billion loan to India over five years
On November 27, 2017, multilateral funding agency, Asian Development Bank (ADB) announced that it will raise annual funding to India to $4 billion from existing $2.7 billion, from next year.
i. Kenichi Yokoyama, ADB Country Director in India, has stated that ADB will now provide loans up to $4 billion to India on annual basis including non-sovereign/private debt during 2018-22.
ii. Thus, India will get about $20 billion loan from ADB over a period of 5 years.
iii. Funds procured through loan from ADB will be deployed to accelerate inclusive economic transformation of India by creating more and well paid jobs, improving access to infrastructure and services, tackling climate change issues and improving climate resilience over these five years.
iv. According to ADB, infrastructure is a major bottleneck in context of India’s economic development. It has identified an investment shortfall of $230 billion a year in India’s infrastructure sector.

DBS Bank lowers India’s FY18 GDP growth to 6.6%
Singapore’s DBS Bank has lowered India’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth forecast for current fiscal (FY 2017-18) to 6.6 per cent from the previous 6.8 per cent.i. Growth forecast has been lowered as DBS Bank believes that Indian businesses are still adjusting to the new Goods and Services Tax (GST) regime, corporate deleveraging is not being carried out at a required pace and there is limited room for fiscal support.
ii. In its report titled “India in 2018/19”, DBS Bank has outlined that recent sovereign rating upgrade from Moody’s has uplifted the overall economic sentiment and is likely to lower offshore borrowing costs for Indian companies.
iii .However, rising Inflation due to higher commodity prices and risk of re-widening of current account and fiscal deficits will test the resilience of Indian economy during the remaining part of this fiscal.
iv. For FY 2018-19, DBS expects Indian economy to grow at 7.2 per cent.

ICICI Prudential Life has become first private Life Insurer in India to implement Electronic – National Automated Clearing House (e-NACH) service of the National Payment Corporation of India.
e-NACH and its Benefit:
i. e-NACH mandate service is a digital registration process through which a customer issues a mandate to the bank to debit his/her account at pre-determined frequencies.
ii. Customer can register for this mandate at the time of purchasing a life insurance policy, by sharing bank details and Aadhaar number.
iii. The mandate is then authenticated through One Time Password (OTP) received on mobile number registered with Aadhaar.
iv. e-NACH service will not only eliminate the need to sign a physical mandate form but will also ensure an error-free registration for the mandate which will facilitate a timely payment of renewal premium.

On 28th November 2017, Amazon India collaborated with hardware accelerator “HAX” and crowd-funding community “Kickstarter” to announce “Startup C-Cube” – a multi-level challenge for the startups that will commence in Bengaluru on December 5, 2017.

i. This move is expected to bring companies together to work towards building the product startup ecosystem. The announcement was made at the first anniversary of Amazon’s flagship programme “Launchpad”.
ii. The winning team in the Startup C-Cube challenge will be supported by Amazon India, HAX and Kickstarter through the entire “concept-to-customer” journey. They will also provide the startup with resources needed to scale up in India, Europe and the US.

Air India Express gets CAT-III-B certification to operate in foggy conditions
Air India Express (AIE), the wholly-owned subsidiary of Air India, has secured the Category III-B certification from Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).Category III-B certification for Air India Express:
i. By gaining this certification, Air India Express flights can now land and takeoff in low visibility conditions even up to an RVR (runway visual range) as low as up to 50 meters.
ii. Air India Express has got CAT III B certification as all its pilots have completed the low visibility training, required for carrying out operations in foggy conditions.
iii. This certification is mandatory to operate during fog season which sets in Northern India, generally from the first week of December every year.
iv. Air India Express is also qualified for LVTO (low visibility Take-off) of up to 125 meters.
v. By having CAT-III-B Certification and LVTO, Air India Express flights will avoid delays during foggy days and will thereby have a competitive edge during this season.

India becomes biggest consumer of Ukraine agriculture exports
On 28th November 2017, Ukraine’s Agriculture Ministry said, India was the biggest market for Ukrainian agriculture products in the first 10 month of 2017, importing 11.3 % of exports in cash terms.

i. Ukraine’s Agriculture Ministry said, Ukrainian agriculture exports were worth $14.7 billion in the 10 months to October 2017, about 23 % more than in the same period last year. Ukraine is among the world’s biggest exporters of sunflower oil, maize and wheat.
ii. Egypt was the second-largest importer, with a 7.5 %share, and the Netherlands was the third, with 6.9 %.
iii. Ukraine’s Agriculture Ministry said sunflower oil dominated Ukrainian agriculture exports in January-October 2017, worth $3.6 billion. Ukraine also exported 15.6 million tonnes of maize for $2.4 billion and 14.2 million tonnes of wheat for $2.2 billion.

On 28th November 2017, Senior IAS officer Pradeep Singh Kharola was appointed as the Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of Air India.

i. Pradeep Singh Kharola, a Karnataka cadre IAS officer, would replace Rajiv Bansal, who has been serving as the interim CMD for a little over three months.
ii. The appointment has come a few days after Rajiv Bansal was given an extension for three months. Currently, Pradeep Singh Kharola is the Managing Director of Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd.

Shaktikanta Das appointed as India’s G 20 Sherpa
Union Ministry of Finance has issued a notification stating that Shaktikanta Das, former secretary of Department of Economic Affairs (DEA), has been appointed as India’s G20 (Group of Twenty) Sherpa till December 31, 2018 for the Development Track.
i. There are two tracks in G 20 – Finance Track and Development Track. India is represented in Finance Track by the incumbent Secretary (Economic Affairs) whereas the Development Track is coordinated by the Sherpa.
ii. Role of a Sherpa is to coordinate on the agenda for the upcoming G20 summit.
iii. As per unwritten convention, deputy chairman of the erstwhile Planning Commission used to be the Sherpa for G20 talks.
iv. Post the setting up of NITI Aayog, Arvind Panagariya was appointed India’s Sherpa for G20 talks in September 2015. Position of India’s G20 Sherpa fell vacant in August 2017, when Mr. Panagariya left NITI Aayog.

On November 27, 2017, Central government appointed former Planning Commission Member, NK Singh as chairman of 15th Finance Commission.About 15th Finance Commission – Structure and Role:
i. Former Economic Affairs Secretary, Shaktikanta Das, Niti Aayog Member, Ramesh Chand, Former Chief Economic Advisor, Ashok Lahiri, and Georgetown University Professor Anoop Singh are the other members of 15th Finance Commission.
ii. As per Article 280 of Indian Constitution, Finance Commission is required to make recommendations on the distribution of the net proceeds of taxes between the Centre and the states.
iii. 15th Finance Commission will make recommendations after reviewing several important aspects of federal fiscal finance including deficit, cash balances, debt levels, and fiscal discipline efforts of the Union and the states.
iv. It will also evaluate impact of Goods and Services Tax (GST) on finances of the Centre and states.
v. 15th Finance Commission will make recommendations, by October 2019, for five years commencing April 1, 2020.

Magazine publisher and broadcast company Meredith Corp. is acquiring Time Inc. in a deal valued at $2.8 billion.
Meredith Corp. acquires Time Inc.:
i. Meredith Corp. acquires Time Inc. in an aim to adapt from print to the digital age. The company would pay $18.50 a share for Time Inc.
ii. Time Inc. is a publishing company that owns the magazines Time, Fortune and Sports Illustrated. Meredith’s best-known brands include Family Circle and Better Homes and Gardens.
iii. The deal which includes $1.85 billion in cash and the assumption of debt had been approved by both firms’ boards of directors and is expected to close in the first quarter in 2018.
iv. Meredith is backed by $650 million from Koch Equity Development, the investment arm of Koch Industries.

Tata Power Solar Systems has commissioned India’s first rooftop solar carport at 70000 sq. mtr. Unity One Mall, in Rohini, Delhi.i. Tata Power Solar Systems is a wholly owned subsidiary of Tata Power Company.
ii. Solar carports are overhead canopies (mounted with solar panel) built to cover parking areas.
iii. Electricity generated through this solar carport is estimated to set off 438 tons of carbon emission annually.
iv. This solar carport will make the mall self sufficient in terms of energy requirement. Besides, mall will also earn on the unused and excess solar electricity produced, by sending it to the local power grid.
v. Connectivity with the local power grid also cuts down the need of an expensive battery storage system.

Sathiyan wins gold in 2017 ITTF Challenge, Spanish Open
On 26th November 2017, Indian paddler G Sathiyan defeated Japan’s Kazuhiro Yoshimura 4-2 to clinch the men’s singles gold medal at the 2017 ITTF Challenge Spanish Open in Almeria, Spain.

i. G Sathiyan beat Kazuhiro Yoshimura 11-7, 3-11, 11-6, 6-11, 13-11, 11-7 in the men singles final and won the gold medal.
ii. This was Sathiyan’s second major title after the singles gold he had won two years ago in the ITTF World Tour Belgium Open.
iii. This was the second ITTF Challenge Series title won by an Indian in 2017 after Soumyajit Ghosh beat Anthony Amalraj in Chile Open final a few months ago.

R Ashwin breaks Dennis Lillee’s record of fastest 300 Test wickets
On 27th November 2017, Ravichandran Ashwin became the fastest bowler to gain 300 Test wicket, in the second match against Sri Lanka at the Vidarbha Cricket Association stadium, in Nagpur.R Ashwin – record of fastest 300 Test wickets:
i. Ashwin scored four wickets on the fourth day of the match. Ashwin’s efforts helped India win the match by a massive margin of an innings and 239 runs.
ii. With the help of his four wickets, Ashwin entered the ‘club 300’ in the longest format of the game and he also became the fastest (54 Test) to reach there.

Malayalam actor Thodupuzha Vasanthi passes away
On 28th November 2017, Popular Malayalam stage, movie and television actor Thodupuzha Vasanthi passed away at a private hospital in Thodupuzha, Kerala
Death of Thodupuzha Vasanthi:
i. Thodupuzha Vasanthi was 65 years old. She was battling cancer for some time now. She was a diabetic also, her right leg was amputated a year ago.
ii. She was a vibrant actor, most of her onscreen characters were bold and candid. Her film career began in 1975. She had acted in over 450 films.
iii. Some of her most popular films include Yavanika, Poochakkoru Mookkuthi, Alolam, Karyam Nissaram, Nirakkoottu and Godfather.
iv. She was born in Manacuad village in Thodupuzha in Idukki district. Her husband passed away in 2010. They did not have any children.
v.She was popular in radio plays also. She had won the state government award for theatre acting.
