Defence Minister inaugurates Workshop on Cyber Security Framework – 2018
On June 19, 2018, A workshop on Cyber Security Framework for Department of Defence organised by DDP, Ministry of Defence was inaugurated by Defence Minister Smt Nirmala Sitharaman.

Government to expand BPO promotion scheme, plans largest National Data Centre in Bhopal
On 18th June 2018, IT Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said that, the government has planned to expand the BPO promotion scheme to 1 lakh seats and will also establish India’s largest National data centre in Bhopal.

i. Ravi Shankar Prasad said at a conference that, the BPO movement will be expanded to 1 lakh seats from the current 48,000 seats.
ii. He also said that, the fifth National Data Centre will be set up in Bhopal with a capacity of five lakh virtual servers.
iii. The National Data Centres host Government websites, services and apps. At present they operate at: Pune, Hyderabad, Delhi and Bhubaneswar.

COP CONNECT mobile App for Telangana police launched
On 18th June 2018, ‘COP CONNECT’, a mobile app to support the professional communication and collaboration needs of the complete police department of Telangana, was launched by the DGP, M Mahendar Reddy.

i. The COP CONNECT app was developed based on the Telangana State Police internal Communication strategy.
ii. This app will help the police personnel to engage and consult each other to perform better.
iii. The app’s end-to-end encryption with server being with Police Department guarantees security and confidentiality of internal Police communication.
iv. It has all features of regular mobile messaging apps. It has fearures for chatting, group chats, file sharing (image, audio, video and documents) and location sharing.
v. Various types of groups can be developed at the state level, District/Commissionerate levels, zonal level, sub- divisional level, circle level and police station level.

Haryana approves scheme to provide Rs 8,000 monthly assistance to female acid victims
On June 19, 2018, The Haryana government has approved a scheme to provide monthly financial assistance of Rs. 8000 to female acid victims.
Key points:
i. This would be applicable to the candidates who would come within the definition of  disability under Section 2 (i) of the Persons with Disabilities (Equal Opportunities, Protection of Rights of Full Participation) Act, 1995.
ii. They would also be given priority in the allotment of fair price shops by the Haryana Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Department.

Chhattisgarh Govt approves merger of around 1.50 lakh ‘shikshakarmi’, with state school education department
On June 19, 2018, The Chhattisgarh cabinet chaired by Chief Minister Raman Singh approved merger of ‘shikshakarmi’ with the state school education department.
Key points:
i. This will be effective from July 1,2018, and will benefit around 1.50 lakh shikshakarmi.
ii. In the first phase, the merger of 1.03 lakh shikshakarmi who have completed eight years of service will be carried out from the July 1.
iii. The remaining 48,000 shikshakarmi will become eligible for merger into the school education department as and when they complete eight years of service.
iv. The shikshakarmis will get the benefit of Pay Commission recommendations, pay scale, allowances and other facilities such as appointment on compassionate grounds and promotions to which regular teachers are entitled.
v. The decision will put a burden of Rs 1,346 crore on the exchequer.
Other approvals:
The state cabinet today also approved implementation of the Prime Minister’s National Health Protection Mission under the Ayushman Bharat Scheme. Around 40 lakh families will be covered under the scheme in the state, Chandrakar said. The scheme will be launched on August 15.

Punjab govt offers free saplings through mobile app : ‘i-Hariyali’
On June 19, 2018, the Punjab government launched a smartphone application that lets users order free plant saplings.

Key Points:
i. The App is called : ‘i-Hariyali’ app and is under ‘Mission Tandarust’ .
ii. The users can book a sapling of their choice, a maximum of 25 per person, from a nearby government nursery.
iii. The app aims to inspire people to plant more saplings to save the environment from pollution.

INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS

International Information and Communication Technology (ICT) 2018 held in Kathmandu on June 17-18
On June 19, 2018, International Conference on Information and Communication Technology (ICT) will be held in Kathmandu, capital city of Nepal from June 17-18, 2018.
International Information and Communication Technology (ICT) 2018 held in Kathmandu on June 17-18i. The Theme of two day conference is “Sustainable Development Goals for Smart Society”.
ii. The conference was organised by Federation of Computer Association Nepal (CAN).
iii. The Objective of the conference was : to bring government and private sector together for developing plan of action using sustainable ICT applications. It also unleashed the prospects of SMART Nepal 2030.
iv. Around 500 delegates, including ICT users, professionals, trainers, researchers and experts from India, Japan, China, Korea and Nepal attended the conference.

Assumption Island: Seychelles denies joint project with India to develop naval base
On June 19, 2018, Seychelles have declined the proposal of ‘Assumption Island’ given by India to develop a naval base due to ongoing protests in the country against this issue.
i. The proposal of Assumption Island owned by the Seychelles has been declined and puts a blow to the government’s “SAGAR” (Security and Growth for All in the Region) programme, announced by PM Modi during a visit to Indian Ocean Rim (IOR) countries in 2015.
ii. Seychelles would never accept any naval base of a foreign country .
About Assumption Island:
Assumption Island began in 2003, but were formalised in 2015 during Mr. Modi’s visit.
The deal was to include a 20-year access to the base, as well as permission to station some military personnel on ground with facilities on the island funded by India, owned by the Seychelles and jointly managed by both sides.

UK excludes India’s from student visa norms list
On June 19, 2018, The UK government has directly linked the exclusion of Indian students from a list of countries to India’s refusal to sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on the return of illegal migrants. This list would offer easier visa norms.
i. The Indian Cabinet had approved the so-called MoU on returns to facilitate the deportation of alleged illegal Indian immigrants in the UK to India
ii. India being excluded from Tier 4 overseas student visa relaxations unveiled by the UK.
iii. But the UK government’s Tier 2 visa relaxation for doctors and other professionals from countries like India has been welcomed.

India gifts Dornier aircraft to Seychelles; To explore trilateral relations with Seychelles and France
On June 19, 2018, India is planning to gift a Dornier aircraft to Seychelles and explore trilateral cooperation involving France.This would safeguard the interests due to refusal of Seychelles on Assumption Island.

About Other agreements:
i. India and France share a logistic service agreement to support each other naval forces in the Indian Ocean Region.
ii. France also has strategic interests in Seychelles and recently engaged with Faure to expand French-Seychelles strategic ties
iii. The Assumption Island proposal entailed investment of $550 million in the development of an airstrip, jetty and housing infrastructure for the Seychelles Coast Guard .
iv. In 2017, 11 Indian naval ships visited Seychelles and eight have visited Seychelles so far this year. Half of Seychelles’ military assets have been provided by India, which has trained around 70% of Seychelles’ military personnel.

BANKING & FINANCE

RBI alters ‘relative’ definition under Companies Act 2013 to check outward remittances
On June 19, 2018, Under the ‘maintenance of close relative’ category of the Liberalised Remittance Scheme (LRS), the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has narrowed the definition of relatives to check the flow of funds.
Key Points:
i. This is only applicable to immediate relatives such as parents, spouses, children and their spouses.
ii. This has been brought about by defining ‘relatives’ under the Companies Act, 2013 
iii. The central bank has made furnishing of PAN mandatory for such transactions.
iv. RBI has introduced a system for daily reporting of individual transactions under the LRS by banks.
v. This enables banks to view remittances already made by an individual during the fiscal, thus improving monitoring and ensuring compliance.
Liberalised Remittance Scheme :
Effective 1 June 2015, under the Liberalised Remittance Scheme made available by the Reserve Bank of India, (hereinafter referred to as the Scheme/LRS) resident individuals are allowed to remit up to USD250,000 per financial year (April-March) for any permitted current or capital account transactions

World Bank approves $700 mn to Bangladesh government’s 4th primary education programme
On June 19, 2018, The World Bank has approved $700 million loan to Bangladesh achieve its education for all vision by improving the primary education sector.
About the education for all programme of Bangladesh:
i. It is the government’s Fourth Primary Education Development Program (PEDP4).
ii. It is the : The Quality Learning for All Program (QLEAP) will cover more than 18 million children studying in pre-primary level to grade 5.
iii. The project will build about 95,000 classrooms, teachers’ rooms, and multipurpose rooms.
iv. It will also build 80,000 Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) blocks and 15,000 safe water sources.
v. This will provide recruitment to about 100,000 teachers.
vi. As a result of the implementation, almost every child steps into a classroom and eight out of 10 children completes primary education.

Yes Bank gets Sebi nod for custodian of securities business enhancing its market offerings
On June 19, 2018,Yes Bank has received approval from market regulator Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) for acting as custodian of securities.
Key points:
i. This would enable the bank to play a larger role in channelising domestic and foreign investments into Indian financial market and would enhance bank’s current capital market offerings.
ii. The bank has taken advantage of its global reach through its international banking team, IFSC banking unit in GIFT City and its representative office in Abu Dhabi as a part of its strategy.
iii. It would be opening representative offices in London and Singapore as per recent approval from the Reserve Bank of India.

Custodian of securities is a licence granted by Sebi to eligible entities allowing them to offer custodial services to financial market participants including foreign institutional investors (FIIs) and foreign portfolio investors (FPIs).

Second tranche of Bharat-22 ETF for raising Rs.6000 crore
On June 19, 2018, The second tranche of Bharat-22 ETF (exchange traded fund) opened for fresh subscription on June 19, 2018.
Second tranche of Bharat-22 ETF for raising Rs.6000 crorei. The government aims to raise Rs 6,000 crore from this round. There is also a green shoe option of Rs 2,400 crore, subject to government approval.
About Bharat 22 index:
i. On November 14, 2017, the government launched the BHARAT-22 exchange traded fund (ETF), which is managed by ICICI Prudential Mutual Fund. It’s a part of the government’s disinvestment programme.
ii. ETFs are essentially index funds that are listed and traded on stocks exchanges just like regular shares.
iii. Bharat 22 comprises 22 stocks including those of central public sector enterprises, PSU banks and holdings under the Specified Undertaking of Unit Trust of India.
iv. Bharat 22 is a welldiversified ETF spanning six sectors — basic materials (4.4%), energy (17.5%), finance (20.3%), industrials (22.6%), FMCG (15.2%) and utilities (20%).
v. The ETF is aimed at helping speed up the government’s disinvestment programme.

On June 19, 2018, in the first set of selection of senior bank officials, the Banks Board Bureau (BBB) has recommended 22 candidates out of 43 from 11 different banks for the executive director positions for state-run banks.

i.Panel is headed by : Mr. Bhanu Pratap Sharma.
ii. The other member of the new BBB panel includes Vedika Bhandarkar, former managing director (investment banking) at Credit Suisse India; P Pradeep Kumar, former managing director at State Bank of India; and Pradip P Shah, founder managing director at Crisil.

iii. Ivan Duque will take charge as President in August 2018. He will succeed outgoing President Juan Manuel Santos.

ICICI Bank appoints Sandeep Bakhshi as COO
On 19th June 2018, Sandeep Bakhshi took charge as Chief Operating Officer (COO) of ICICI Bank the bank announced that, CEO Chanda Kochhar will be on leave till the completion of internal enquiry against her regarding the Videocon loan issue.

i. Sandeep Bakhshi was the MD and CEO of ICICI Prudential Life Insurance. Chanda Kochhar, the managing director (MD) & chief executive officer (CEO) of ICICI Bank will be on leave, till the enquiry ends.
ii. The changes have been made following the allegations in transactions between Videocon Industries, Chanda Kochhar and her husband Deepak Kochhar’s company NuPower Renewables.
iii. All executive directors on the board of ICICI Bank and the executive management will report to Sandeep Bakhshi. Sandeep Bakhshi will report to Chanda Kochhar, who will continue as MD & CEO.

On June 19, 2018, The Union government has appointed Uday Vora the chief conservator of forest as the member of the National Wetland Committee.
Key points:
i. The National Wetlands Committee (NWC) under the chairpersonship of secretary, MOEF&CC has been constituted.
ii. The Committee has been formed under the Wetlands (Conservation and Management) Rules, 2017.
iii. Other than Vora , HS Singh was appointed as the member of the standing committee of the National Board for Wildlife and CN Pandey was appointed as chairman of the 14-member Expert Appraisal Committee for Environment Clearance to Industry-I projects.

On June 19, 2018, US-based cab aggregator Uber  Pradeep Parameswaran as President of its India and South Asia operations.

i. He succeeds Amit Jain, who was elevated to the role of Head of Asia Pacific region.
ii. He has been associated with companies like Hindustan Lever, McKinsey & Co, and Den Networks.

Mehbooba Mufti resigns as Jammu and Kashmir’s chief minister
On 19th June 2018, Mehbooba Mufti resigned as Jammu and Kashmir’s chief minister after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ended its alliance with Mehbooba Mufti’s Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Resignation of Mehbooba Mufti:
i. In the Jammu and Kashmir elections of 2015, no party secured the 45 seats required for a majority win in the assembly.
ii. PDP was the largest party with 28 seats. BJP had secured 25 seats. PDP and BJP entered an alliance to form a government.
iii. After the gang-rape and murder of an eight-year-old girl from the Muslim community in Kathua district of Jammu & Kashmir in April 2018, the relationship between BJP and PDP started weakening.
iv. After BJP ended its alliance with PDP, the Congress, which has 12 seats in the assembly, said it didn’t want to ally with PDP.
v. Mehbooba Mufti said that PDP would not form any other alliance and resigned as Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir.
vi. Jammu and Kashmir will now be administered by the Centre through J&K Governor NN Vohra. Governor’s rule can continue for 1 year without the need for a reference to Parliament.

Bajaj Electricals acquires Nirlep Appliances
On 15th June 2018, Bajaj Electricals bought the Nirlep Appliances for nearly Rs 80 crore, which includes equity and debt.

i. Nirlep Appliances is a non-stick cookware maker. It is based in Aurangabad. It was launched in 1968.
ii. The deal comprises Rs 42.50 crore for 100 % equity and taking over around Rs 30 crore of debt. The rest is deferred payment.
iii. After acquisition, Nirlep Appliances will become a wholly-owned subsidiary of Bajaj Electricals.

Vodafone – Idea to merge to form Vodafone Idea Ltd
On June 19, 2018, The telecom department is likely to approve the merger of Vodafone India and Idea Cellular that will create the country’s largest mobile service operator with proposed name of Vodafone Idea Ltd.
Key points:
i. It will create India’s largest telecom firm worth over $23 billion with a 35 per cent market share and a subscriber base of around 430 million.
ii. Vodafone is expected to own 45.1 per cent, 26 per cent by Aditya Birla Group and Idea shareholders will own 28.9 in the combined entity.
iii. This would ease combined debt of both the companies which is estimated to be around Rs 1.15 lakh crore.
iv. The Department of Telecom (DoT) will seek a bank guarantee of around Rs 2,100 crore of Idea Cellular Network.

Summit: World’s most powerful supercomputer unveiled by US scientists
US scientists have unveiled “Summit”, the world’s most powerful and smartest scientific supercomputer.

i. Summit can perform more than 2,00,000 trillion calculations per second. It would be of great help in research in energy, advanced materials and artificial intelligence (AI).
ii. The US Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) supercomputer called Summit will be 8 times more powerful than its previous system Titan.
iii. Summit can also perform over 3 billion mixed precision calculations a second, for some scientific applications.
iv. The IBM AC922 system comprises 4,608 compute servers, each having two 22-core IBM Power9 processors and six NVIDIA Tesla V100 graphics processing unit accelerators, interconnected with dual-rail Mellanox EDR 100 Gb/s InfiniBand.
v. Summit has more than 10 petabytes of memory with fast, high-bandwidth pathways for data movement.
vi. With advanced hardware and data subsystems Summit marks an evolution of the hybrid CPU-GPU architecture of Titan.

Indian Coast Guard Ship ‘Rani Rashmoni’ commissioned in Visakhapatnam
On June 19, 2018, The last of the five Fast Patrol Vessel (FPV) project of Indian Coast Guard (ICG) named ‘Rani Rashmoni’ was commissioned in the Indian Coast Guard in Vishakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh.
i. The previous vessels included : Rani Abbakka , Rani Avanti , Rani Durgavati, Rani Gaidinliu.
ii. These patrols are equipped with advanced and state of the art sensors and are designed to perform tasks such as surveillance, search and rescue, anti-smuggling and anti-poaching operations.
About Rani Rashmoni:
i. It is a 346-tonne ship with 51 meters length, 8.36 meters width has been named after the legendary  Rani Rashmoni of Kolkata. It has been designed and built by the Hindustan Shipyard Limited (HSL) indigenously.
ii. It is propelled by three MTU 40000 series diesel engines of 2720 KW capacity each coupled with three Rolls Royce Kamewa jets and can achieve a maximum speeds of 34 knots (63kmph).
iii. ICGS Rani Rashmoni has four officers and 34 men and is commanded by Commandant Navdeep Safaya.

i. Puan was 62 years old. She was called the “grand old lady” of Sumatran orangutans, in Australia.
ii. She was born in 1956. She was gifted to the zoo by a sultan from Malaysia on New Year 1968.
iii. She was honoured by the Guinness Book of Records as the oldest living Sumatran orangutan in the world.
iv. She was the mother of 11 children. Her 54 descendants have inhabited various parts of the world.
v. Sumatran orangutan has been categorized as a critically endangered species, as per WWF.

Legendary mimicry artist Nerella Venumadhav passes away at 85
On June 19, 2018, Noted mimicry artiste Nerella Venumadhav died after a brief illness at his home in Mattewada in Warangal city in Telangana.
Key Points:
i.He was 85 and is survived by wife, two daughters, and two sons.
ii.He was awarded the Padma Shri in 2001.
iii.He had also received Kalaprapoorna award from the Andhra University and honour of Gajarohanam.
iv.He was the first Indian mimicry and ventriloquism artiste to have performed at the UN headquarters.
v.He  had served as a nominated Member of Legislative Council of Andhra Pradesh from 1972 to 1978.
vi.He had even introduced the syllabus for a diploma course in mimicry for the Potti Sriramulu Telugu University and had even taught the subject.

Maneka Gandhi, Hansraj Ahir launched book titled “Legal Processes for the Police in Respect of Crime Against Children”
On 19th June 2018, Union Minister for Women and Child Development Maneka Gandhi and Minister of State for Home Hansraj Ahir jointly launched “Legal Processes for the Police in Respect of Crime Against Children”, a handbook on ways to prevent crimes against children.
Legal Processes for the Police in Respect of Crime Against Children:
i. The handbook has been released with an idea to prevent child abuse and for capacity building of the police to deal with this issue.
ii. This has been brought out by the Bureau of Police Research and Development (BPR&D) along with the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), Mumbai.
iii. This handbook deals with the safety of children. In this issue, the police is also collaborating with the Ministry for Women and Child Development and the Ministry of Home Affairs.

On 19th June 2018, International Day for the Elimination of Sexual Violence in Conflict was observed all over the world.

Indian Army observes 2018 as Year of Disabled Soldiers in Line of Duty to honor their sacrifice
On June 19, 2018, The ministry of Defence is observing the year 2018 as the ‘Year of Disabled Soldiers in Line of Duty’.
This is to honour soldiers who have been disabled in line of duty, while serving the Nation.
Key Points:
i. The objective is to ease the sufferings of these soldiers, who have done their duty with utmost dedication to the Nation and have been disabled for the life.
ii. This will provide a onetime financial assistance to disabled soldiers who have been boarded out from service on medical grounds and are rendered non-employable due to their medical or physical conditions.
iii. The Army would create awareness and provide with respect to medical, rehabilitation, various beneficiary schemes of Central and State Governments, vocational opportunities and assistance for their placement.
