On 28th June 2024, The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) under the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), Ministry of Communications (MoC), Government of India (GoI), has announced that Telecommunication Mobile Number Portability (9thAmendment) Regulations, 2024 issued on 14th March, 2024, will come into force from 1st July, 2024.
These new regulations aimed to curb the porting of mobile numbers by way of fraudulent Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) swap or replacement by unscrupulous elements.
TRAI has amended the Telecommunication Mobile Number Portability Regulations, 2009 in exercise of powers conferred by sub-section (1) of section 36, read with sub-clauses (i), (iii), and (v) of clause (b) of sub-section (1) of section 11, of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India Act, 1997.
The new regulations has introduced an additional criterion for rejecting the request for allocation of a Unique Porting Code (UPC), the 1st step to changing service providers using Mobile Number Portability (MNP).
