    The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) has dissolved the 14-member Standing Committee on Statistics (SCoS), led by former chief statistician Pronab Sen after the committee members questioned the delay in conducting the decennial Census.
     The MoSPI constituted a Steering Committee for the NSS based on a recommendation from the National Statistical Commission (NSC).
     It was constituted to address survey-related issues of the National Sample Survey Office (NSSO).
     The new committee is chaired by Rajeeva Laxman Karandikar, Chairman of the NSC, and includes at least 4 members from the dissolved SCoS.
     On July 13, 2023, the GoI constituted a 14-member SCoS, after renaming and expanding the scope of coverage of the Standing Committee on Economic Statistics (SCES) formed in December 2019.
     The SCoS was tasked to assist the GoI with survey methodology, including sampling frame, sampling design, etc. Its primary focus was to understand the data needs of the user community and ensure its availability.

     The National Florence Nightingale Awards were instituted in 1973 by the MoH&FW.
     In 2024, the 15 awards were presented in 3 categories namely:
    o i.Registered Auxiliary Nurses and Midwife (ANM)- 5 Awards;
    o ii.Registered Lady Health Visitors (LHV)- 1 Award; and
    o iii.Registered Nurses and Midwife – 9 Awards

    According to the 9th edition of U.S. News & World Report’s Annual Best Countries Ranking 2024, India has slipped by 3 positions, from 30th spot (in 2023) to 33rd spot (in 2024) with an overall score of 46.4.
     Switzerland has topped the Best Countries rankings for 2024 with an overall score of 100, for the 3rd consecutive year and for the 7th year since its inception.
     Japan has secured 2nd position in the latest rankings, followed by the United States of America (USA) and Canada ranked at 3rd and 4th position respectively.
     According to the report, India has an area of 3,287, 263 Square Kilometer (Sq. km), and a population of around 1.4 billion with Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of USD 3.55 trillion.
     Among the 10 sub-rankings of the report, India was featured among top 10 countries in only two sub-rankings i.e. in “Movers” category (7th ) and Heritage category (10th rank).
     India has again secured 12th position in “Power” category for the 2nd consecutive year with a score of 45.1.

    Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), and the Indian Navy (IN) conducted a successful flight test of an indigenously built Vertical Launch Short Range Surface-to-Air Missile (VL-SR SAM) from the launchpad of the Integrated Test Range (ITR) at Chandipur in Balasore district off the coast of Odisha.
     The flight test was conducted using a land-based vertical launcher, engaging a high-speed aerial target flying at a low altitude. The missile system successfully detected and hit the target.
     The flight test aimed to validate several updated components of the weapon system, including the Proximity Fuse and Seeker.
     The system’s performance was meticulously monitored and verified using various range instruments, such as the Radar, Electro-Optical Tracking System (EOTS), and Telemetry, deployed at ITR Chandipur.
     VL-SR SAM is a ship-based weapon system developed by Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL), a Hyderabad (Telangana)-based Public Sector Undertaking (PSU) under the MoD, for the IN.
     It provides IN warships with quick-reaction air defence against supersonic, low-flying targets like aircraft and drones, even in all weather conditions.
     The VL-SR SAM is built with 4 small wings to maintain stability during flight and is expected to carry a high-explosive warhead filled with pre-formed fragments.

     China topped the Medal tally with 220 medals (94 gold; 76 Silver and 50 Bronze) followed by Great Britain at 2nd place with 124 medals (49 golds, 44 Silver and 31 Bronze) and the United States of America (USA) at the 3rd place with 105 medals (36 Gold; 42 Silver and 27 Bronze).
     Team India achieved its best-ever single-day gain at the Paralympics, winning eight medals (2 Gold, 3 Silver and 3 bronze) in Paris 2024.
     The duo broke the World Record with a combined score of 1399 to set a new Paralympic Record at the Paris Games.
     Harvinder Singh won the gold medal in the Men’s individual recurve open event and secured India’s first-ever Paralympic gold medal in Archery.
     Avani Lekhara won the gold medal in the Women’s 10m Air Rifle Standing SH1 and became the first Indian woman to win two gold medals in the Games’ history.
     Sumit Antil won the gold medal in the men’s javelin throw F64 class at Paris 2024 and became the first Indian male para-athlete to defend his title in the Paralympics.
     Navdeep Singh won a gold in the men’s javelin throw F41 class at Paris 2024 with a new Paralympic record of 47.32m to register India’s first-ever medal in the category.
