India Hosts BRICS Chief Justices’ Forum in New Delhi
The Supreme Court(SC) of India, hosted the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) Chief Justices’ Forum held from September 4 to 6, 2026 in New Delhi, Delhi.

  • Chief Justice of India(CJI) Surya Kant held bilateral meetings with judicial leaders from 10 countries, focusing on judicial cooperation, Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs), mediation and arbitration.

14th BRICS Science Ministerial Meet: The 14th BRICS Science Ministerial Meeting was held under the chairmanship of Union Minister of State (MoS) Dr. Jitendra Singh, Ministry of Science and Technology (MoS&T), in Chennai, Tamil Nadu (TN).
BRICS Sports Ministers’ Meeting: Union  Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports (MYAS) chaired the BRICS Sports Ministers’ Meeting  in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh (AP).
BRICS Friendship Cycling: Union Minister  Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, MYAS and Union Minister of State (MoS) Raksha Khadse, MYAS led a BRICS Friendship Cycling Event in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh (AP).
BRICS WG Meeting on Ocean and Polar Science: The Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES) as part of India’s 2026 BRICS Presidency, organised the 8th Meeting of the BRICS Working Group (WG) on Ocean and Polar Science and Technology (OPST) in Goa.
18th BRICS Academic Forum: India hosted the 18th BRICS Academic Forum, as part of India’s 2026 BRICS Presidency, held under the theme “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability” in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh (UP).

DAC Approves Rs 1.10 Lakh Crore Defence Procurement for Indian Armed Forces
In September 2026, the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC), chaired by Union Minister Rajnath Singh, Ministry of Defence (MoD), approved capital acquisition proposals worth about Rs.1.10 lakh crore to strengthen the combat capabilities of the Indian Army (IA), Indian Navy (IN), and Indian Air Force (IAF).

  • The approvals, granted under the Acceptance of Necessity (AoN) stage, aim to enhance combat readiness while promoting self-reliance in defence manufacturing.

About Defence Acquisition Approvals:
IA Procurement: The approvals include Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (CBRN) Reconnaissance Vehicles; High Mobility Vehicles (HMVs); Advanced Light Helicopters (ALHs); Self-Propelled Mechanical Mine Layers (MMLs); Trawl Tanks; and the Sarvatra Bridge System.
IN Procurements: The approvals include Arudhra Radars and Marine Gas Turbines (MGTs) for indigenous warship propulsion.
IAF Procurement: The approvals include proposals to enhance the operational capability of fighter aircraft, transport aircraft and helicopters, along with the Ground-Based Multi-Purpose Jammer (GBMPJ) and the Defence Forces Secure Access Card (DEFSAC).

NITI Aayog Launched PACT and ZET Marketplace at 5th e-FAST Summit
In September 2026, the National Institution for Transforming India (NITI) Aayog launched the Platform for Aggregating Clean Transport (PACT) and introduced a complementary Zero-Emission Truck (ZET) marketplace at the 5th Electric-Freight Accelerator for Sustainable Transport (e-FAST) India Summit held in New Delhi, Delhi.
Key Highlights:
PACT Purpose: The PACT aims to aggregate freight demand from shippers, Logistics Service Providers (LSPs) and other ecosystem stakeholders, converting this demand into deployment opportunities across identified freight corridors.
ZET Marketplace: It is an interactive business-engagement platform connecting e-truck manufacturers, LSPs (Logistics Service Provider), CPOs (Charge Point Operator), financiers, and technology companies.

INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS

India’s 4 More Heritage Sites Added to UNESCO Tentative List, taking India’s total to 73 
In September 2026, the Permanent Delegation of India to United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) announced the inclusion of  4 new Indian cultural heritage sites, namely Rangpur-Sivasagar Historic Ensemble (Assam), the Colonial Penal Settlement (Andaman Islands), Nicobarese Cultural Continuity (in the Central Group of Nicobar Islands), and the Painted Haveli Towns of Shekhawati (Rajasthan), in the Tentative List of UNESCO’s World Heritage Convention (WHC).Category: Cultural

  • With this, the total number of Indian sites on the tentative list increases to 73 (including 53 under Cultural category, 3 under Mixed Category and 17 under Natural Category).

Key Details of Sites:
 Rangapur-Sivasagar Historic Ensemble: Rangpur-Sivasagar Historic Ensemble,  a pre-modern urban and cultural landscape is  located in the Sivasagar district of Assam, which is about 360 kilometer (km) North-East (NE) of Guwahati, the capital city of the state.
Colonial Penal Settlement: It was introduced in Andaman Islands after the 1857 uprisings, comprises 4 historically connected sites:  Chatham Island; Viper Island; Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose (NSCB) Island; and Cellular Jail.
Nicobarese Cultural Continuity: Located in Nicobar district, also called as “Nancowry group of islands”, comprising 7 islands: Trinket, Katchal, Chowra, Teressa, Kamorta, Nancowrie, and Bompoka islands.
Painted Haveli Towns of Shekhawati: These haveli towns are mainly located in the semi-arid Shekhawati region in the northern Rajasthan, spanning across 3 districts: Sikar, Jhunjhunu, and Churu.

India Joins ‘Global 6G Initiative’ with USA and 24 Nations to Boost Secure Next-Gen Networks
In September 2026, India, through the Ministry of Commerce and Industry (MoC&I), joined a global sixth-generation 6G initiativeCall to Action for 6G Leadership and Security’ with the United States of America (USA) and 24 countries to strengthen international collaboration to build secure, interoperable, and innovation-driven next-generation telecom networks.

  • The decision followed a meeting between Union Minister of State (MoS) Jitin Prasada, MoC&I and USA Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick at Chapel Hill, North Carolina, USA, on the sidelines of the Group of Twenty (G20) Innovation Ministerial.

About India’s Participation at Global 6G Initiative:
Framework: India joined the Call to Action for 6G Leadership and Security, led by USA’s National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA), as the 26th country committing to collaborative efforts for 6G development over the coming years.
IndiaVision: India is advancing its domestic ambitions through the Bharat 6G Mission, aiming to establish itself as a global hub for 6G intellectual property, telecom products, and affordable solutions by 2030.
G20Role: At the G20 Innovation Ministerial, India reaffirmed its commitment to partnerships in emerging technologies including Artificial Intelligence (AI), semiconductors, Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI), and robotics for economic growth.

BANKING & FINANCE

RBI Grants Scheduled Bank Status to Coastal Local Area Bank
In September 2026, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) formally included Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh (AP) based Coastal Local Area Bank Limited, India’s first Local Area Bank (LAB), in the Second Schedule under the RBI Act, 1934.
Coastal Bank Highlights:
Banking Milestone: Coastal Bank, India’s first local area bank, has become the only scheduled bank headquartered in AP after being included in the RBI’s Second Schedule.
Significance: The scheduled bank status will provide Coastal LAB access to RBI liquidity facilities and money market operations, strengthening its institutional position and supporting future expansion.

  • Coastal LAB remains classified as a LAB despite its inclusion in the RBI Act’s Second Schedule.

ADB Signs First TAS Mandate in India with MP for Renewable Energy PPP Projects
On 7 September 2026, the Asian Development Bank (ADB) signed its first Transaction Advisory Services (TAS) mandate in India with the Government of Madhya Pradesh (MP) to facilitate the development of renewable energy Public-Private Partnership (PPP) projects and attract private investment of up to USD 1 billion in the state.

  • The agreement was signed in Bhopal(MP) by Mio Oka, Country Director for India, ADB in the presence of Dr. Mohan Yadav, Chief Minister (CM), MP.

About TAS Agreement:
Framework: The TAS agreement enables ADB to serve as a Transaction Advisor for PPP-based renewable energy projects in MP, providing support in project preparation, structuring, procurement frameworks, bankable tender development, and mobilisation of private investment.
Objective: The initiative aims to strengthen renewable energy infrastructure, promote private-sector participation, enhance energy security and grid stability, and develop scalable clean-energy investment models.
Deployment: The project pipeline includes a solar power generation facility integrated with a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) at Shajapur, MP.

Bandhan Bank & Mastercard Launches Credit Card Business with Four-Tier Portfolio
In September 2026, Bandhan Bank Limited, in partnership with Mastercard, launched its credit card portfolio featuring four variants: Sparks, Ignite, Flare and Lumina,  targeting diverse customer segments with digital-first application and lifestyle-based benefits.
About Bandhan Bank Credit Card : 
Features: The cards provide benefits across categories such as grocery, apparel, travel, dining, entertainment and international spending, with tier-based rewards and privileges.
Variants: Sparks targets everyday spending, Ignite focuses on travel and rewards, Flare offers travel and lifestyle perks, while Lumina provides premium benefits including concierge and airport services.
Technology: All cards operate on the Mastercard network and support a digital-first application process alongside traditional branch-based onboarding.
Bandhan Bank: Commencing operations as a universal bank on 23 August 2015, it is headquartered in Kolkata, West Bengal (WB) and is led by Managing Director (MD) and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Partha Pratim Sengupta.

MoF Secures USD 1 billion IFC funding to Boost Long-term  MSME Credit
In September 2026, the Ministry of Finance (MoF) secured USD 1 billion in funding from the International Finance Corporation (IFC) to help banks and Financial Institutions (FIs) in India to provide more long-term credit to small businesses.

  • This new funding complements the existing credit support available to the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) sector through the Government of India (GoI)’s Emergency Credit Line Guarantee Scheme (ECGLS).

Key Details:
Fund: USD 500 million has been already provided to the Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI) by IFC from its resources, while the remaining USD 500 million will be raised through SIDBI’s lender syndicate.
Swapped into INR: By using the Reserve Bank of India (RBI)’s special swap window, the credit facility has been swapped into Indian Rupee (INR).
Target MSME Sectors: The credit facility will focus on MSMEs sectors across manufacturing and services value chain, including, auto and auto-components, engineering goods, electronics, textiles, food processing, and other employment-intensive sectors.
Utilizations of funds by SIDBI: A major portion of the funding will be directly on-lent by SIDBI to MSMEs for a maximum period of 7 years, with a suitable moratorium, primarily to support machinery acquisition, modernization, and business expansion.

  • In addition, SIDBI has been authorized to use the funds to lend to FIs, particularly to Non-Banking Financial Companies (NBFCs).

About SIDBI: Established in 1990, SIDBI is the apex financial institution, developed for the promotion, financing and development of  the MSME sector in India, with headquarters in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh (UP). Currently Manoj Mittal serves as its Chairman & Managing Director (CMD).

ECONOMY & BUSINESS

Adani Defence Signs 5-Year Ammunition Supply Pact for AK-203 Rifle Programme 
In September 2026, Adani Defence & Aerospace and Indo-Russian Rifles Private Limited (IRRPL) signed a five-year agreement for the supply of indigenously manufactured 7.62×39 mm small-calibre ammunition for India’s AK-203 assault rifle programme.

  • The pact will provide a domestic source of ammunition and ensure continuity of supply while strengthening India’s indigenous small-arms ecosystem.

Highlights of the Agreement:
Background: The Ministry of Defence (MoD) signed a contract on 6 December 2021 for 6,01,427 rifles for the Indian Armed Forces.
Manufacturing:  The 7.62×39 mm ammunition will be manufactured at Adani Defence’s ammunition facility in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, while the AK-203 rifles are manufactured by IRRPL at its Korwa facility in Amethi, Uttar Pradesh.
AK-203 Programme: The Ministry of Defence (MoD) signed a contract with IRRPL in December 2021 for over 6 lakh AK-203 rifles.
Indigenisation: IRRPL recently manufactured and test-fired the first 100% indigenous AK-203, named ‘Sher’, using Indian components and input materials.
Features: The 7.62×39 mm gas-operated AK-203 can fire 700 rounds per minute and has an effective range of up to 800 metres(m). The Indian military is inducting the rifles to replace ageing Indian Small Arms System(INSAS) rifles.

APPOINTMENTS & RESIGNATIONS

Dr Vinaya Prakash Singh Re-elected as Secretary-General of  APPU for Second Term 
In September 2026, Dr Vinaya Prakash Singh, a 1988-batch officer of the Indian Postal Service(IPoS), was re-elected as Secretary-General of the Asian-Pacific Postal Union (APPU) for a second consecutive 4 -year term.

  • He was elected unopposed by acclamation at the 14th APPU Congress held in Bangkok, Thailand  on 4 September 2026, with his second term scheduled from January 2027 to December 2030.

About Dr Vinaya Prakash Singh:
Career: He has held key positions including Member of the Postal Services Board, Senior Deputy Director General (DDG) and Chief Vigilance Officer (CVO) in the Department of Posts (DoP), Chief Postmaster General of the Uttar Pradesh (UP) Circle, and Chief General Manager (CGM) at India Post Headquarters.

  • His career includes assignments with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Afghanistan, the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), and the Army Postal Service Corps.

First Term: He first assumed charge as APPU Secretary-General in January 2023 after being elected at the 13th APPU Congress in 2022.

DoSJ&E Appointed Bhagwat Prasad Makwana as Chairperson  of NCSK 
In September 2026, the Department of Social Justice and Empowerment (DoJ&E) which works under the Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment (MoSJ&E), appointed Bhagwat Prasad Makwana as the Chairperson of the of the National Commission for Safai Karamcharis (NCSK).

  • Apart from the Chairperson, DoSJ&E has appointed a Vice-Chairperson and three members to the Commission, with these appointments effective until March 31, 2028, aligning with the remaining tenure of the current Commission.

Key Details of Appointments:
Vice-Chairperson:  Kaishab Bihari, a farmer from Odisha, has been appointed as Vice-Chairperson of the commission.

  •  He has been actively engaged in the work relating to  the welfare and upliftment of SC, Scheduled Tribes (STs) and other disadvantaged sections of society.

Members: Also, DoSJ&E appointed Manoj Kumar Balmiki, who has previously served as a Member of the State Safai Karamchari Commission, for  Uttar Pradesh (UP) government (from 2019 to 2022); Sushma Gaudiyal, a Professor in the Department of Hindi at Bareilly College, Bareilly(UP); and Ravi Ramu Kalose, a retired municipal Engineer, have been appointed as members of the NCSK.

Satwik–Chirag Become First Indians to Clinch China Masters Men’s Doubles Title
In September 2026, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty became the first Indians to win the China Masters since the tournament began in 2005, defeating China’s He Jiting and Ren Xiangyu 11–21, 21–13, 21–17 in the men’s doubles final at Shenzhen, China.

  • The 19th edition of the China Masters was held from 1 to 6 September 2026.

About India’s Victory at China Masters: 
Historic Win: Satwik-Chirag secured their maiden China Masters title after finishing runners-up in 2023 and 2025.
Prize Money: The pair received USD 92,500 (around Rs 87.4 lakh). The tournament carried a total prize purse of USD 1.25 million.
2026 Season: The victory marked their second title of 2026, following the Singapore Open Super 750, and their 10th Badminton World Federation (BWF) World Tour title.
Impact: The victory extended Satwik-Chirag’s head-to-head record against He Ji Ting and Ren Xiang Yu to 3–0 and came ahead of the 2026 Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, where the Indian pair will compete as defending champions.

Spain Footballer Marcos Llorente Retires From International Football

Jharkhand Minister Sudivya Kumar Sonu Passed Away
In September 2026, Sudivya Kumar Sonu, Jharkhand’s Minister for Urban Development, Higher and Technical Education Minister, passed away at the age of 56 in Giridih, Jharkhand.

  • He was born on 26 July 1970 in Giridih, Bihar(present day Giridih, Jharkhand).

About Sudivya Kumar Sonu:
Profile: He was a Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) leader and two-term Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) from Giridih(2019, 2024), serving as a Cabinet Minister in the Jharkhand government.

  • He was known for his key role in governance and political negotiations in the state.

Career: He won the Giridih Assembly seat in 2019 and retained it in 2024, becoming the first JMM legislator from the constituency to be made a minister in over two decades.

  • He also released the 5th revised and enlarged edition of ‘Chandrakanta Abhidhan’, an important work of Assamese lexicography.

The United Nations (UN)-recognised World Duchenne Awareness Day (WDAD), also known as World Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy Day, is observed annually on 7 September to raise awareness about Duchenne and Becker Muscular Dystrophy (DMD/BMD), genetic disorders that primarily affect the muscles.

Background: 
Origin: In 2014, Elizabeth Vroom, President of the World Duchenne Organization (WDO), and Nicoletta Madia, Community Coordinator, initiated WDAD on 7 September to raise awareness about Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD).
UN Recognition: On 29 November 2023, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) adopted Resolution A/RES/78/12, officially designating 7 September as World Duchenne Awareness Day from 2024.
First UN Observance: The first UN-recognised observance of WDAD was held on 7 September 2024.

Assam Govt Signs MoUs with 6 Organisations to Integrate AI in School Education
In September 2026, the Samagra Shiksha, Government of Assam, signed Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with with six organisations to introduce Artificial Intelligence (AI), digital technology and innovative learning solutions in the state’s school education system.

  • The partner organisations are Google AI, Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras)–Bodhan AI, Life Education and Health Services (LEHS)–Wadhwani AI, Educate Girls, EkStep Foundation–AXL, and Canva Education.

Key Areas of Collaboration:
Google AI: Focuses on AI-enabled teaching, teacher training and digital skills, including the use of AI-powered education tools.
IIT Madras–Bodhan AI: Aims to train around 1 lakh teachers of Classes VI–XII by May 2027 to improve AI proficiency.
LEHS–Wadhwani AI: Uses AI-based assessment tools to identify learning gaps and strengthen foundational literacy.
Educate Girls: Supports identification, enrolment and retention of out-of-school adolescents, especially girls and vulnerable groups.
