Union Government forms advisory committee for Semicon India Programme

Govt. forms advisory committee for ₹76,000-crore ‘Semicon India’ programme (1)The Union Government on April 6, 2022, has formed an advisory committee to drive the Rs 76,000 crore project, Semicon India, to make the country a global leader in semiconductor manufacturing, design and innovation.

  • The Committee will be chaired by Ashwini Vaishnaw (Minister of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY).
  • Vice Chairperson – Rajeev Chandrashekhar (Minister of State, MeitY).
  • Ajay Prakash Sawhney (Secretary, MeitY) will be the convenor.

i.The Union Cabinet recently gave approval to the ‘Semicon India’ programme with a total outlay of ₹76,000 crore for the development of the semiconductor and display manufacturing ecosystem in the country.
ii.Under which a specialised and dedicated “India Semiconductor Mission (ISM)” has been set up within Digital India Corporation to drive India’s strategies for developing the ecosystem.
iii.The Objective of the Advisory Committee is to steer the ISM in a structured, efficient, and strategic manner, and also provide necessary guidance to the ISM executives.
iv.The Mandate of the committee is to provide key inputs for building a resilient supply chain, promoting investments, financing mechanisms, global engagement, research & innovation, and Intellectual Property (IP) generation for the semiconductors and display ecosystem and enable an ecosystem to support start-ups and Micro Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs).

HAL Of India Signed MoU with IAI Of Israel To Convert Civil Aircraft Into MMTT Aircraft HAL ties up with IAI of Israel to convert passenger aircraft into mid-air refuellers

Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) to convert civil passenger aircraft to “Multi Mission Tanker Transport” (MMTT) aircraft in India. It also promotes Atmanirbhar Bharat”.

  • HAL will convert civil aircraft into mid-air refuelling aircraft with cargo and transport capabilities.
  • The MoU also covers conversion of passenger aircraft to freighter aircraft (cargo aircraft).

Aircraft Carrier Used:
i.The aircraft used in the conversion to tankers is Boeing 767 passenger aircraft.
ii.Boeing 767 is being used as it has a specialised fuel tanker called KC-46 Pegasus.

  • The Boeing KC-46 Pegasus is an American military aerial refuelling and strategic military transport aircraft developed by Boeing from its 767 jet airliner.

Uses Of The Boeing 767:
i.The Boeing 767 is used as “MARS” (Mid Air Refuelling System) for the Indian Air Force (IAF) and it is called the “Phalcon model”. And the technology gives the fighter jet the ability to cover enhanced distances without having to land to refuel.
ii.It also allows the aircraft to stay in the air much beyond their normal limits, allowing it to perform a step ahead.
Illyushin-78 (IL-78) Tankers:
i.The IAF presently has six Russian IL-78 tankers and has been looking to procure six new aircraft. Because of the delayal of the deal to procure six IL-78, the IAF has been looking to lease some mid-air refuellers, by the idea of Defence Acquisition Procedure (DAP) 2020.

  • The introduction of MMTT aircraft will replace the IL-78 mid-air refueller.

Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) With Indian Air Force (IAF):
In the early 2000s, IAI had experience in modified aircraft for the IAF. IAI fitted the Phalcon radar into three IAF IL-76 aircraft, converting them into Airborne Warning and Control Systems (AWACS).

9th Edition of India-Kyrgyzstan Joint Special Forces Exercise ‘Khanjar 2022’ Culminated 9th Edition of India-Kyrgyzstan Joint Special Forces Exercise culminated

On April 6, 2022, the 9th Edition of the India-Kyrgyzstan Joint Special Forces Exercise ‘Khanjar 2022′ culminated which commenced on 25 Mar 2022 at Special Forces Training School, Bakloh, Himachal Pradesh (HP). 

  • It strengthened the mutual confidence & interoperability between Indian Special Forces and Kyrgyzstan Special Forces.

Key Points:
i.It was focused on sharing best practices of tactics, techniques, procedures to counter existing and emergent threats.
ii.Combat shooting, survival in mountains, hostage rescue drills & unarmed combat were practiced extensively during the Exercise.
iii.This joint training also strengthened the existing bond between India and Kyrgyzstan regarding strategic autonomy, democratic values and zero tolerance for terrorism.

DAHD Launches One Health Pilot Project in UttarakhandDepartment of Animal Husbandry and Dairying launches ‘One Health’ pilot project in Uttarakhand

The Department of Animal Husbandry & Dairying (DAHD), under the Ministry Of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying(MoFAHD), the Government of India(GoI) in collaboration with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF) and the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) as implementation partner has launched the One Health Pilot project in Uttarakhand to implement the One Health Framework by One Health Support Unit during an event organised at Hotel Madhuban, Dehradun, Uttarakhand. 

  • Atul Chaturvedi, Secretary(AHD), DAHD launched the project in the presence of Dr Praveen Malik, Animal Husbandry Commissioner, GoI and other senior officials. 

The objective of the unit is to develop a national One Health roadmap based on the learnings of the pilot project implementation.

Arya.ag joins UN Global Compact programme to uphold SDGs targets

Arya.ag, a platform for commerce grain,  joined the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC) India,  voluntarily conforming to universal sustainability principles and to achieve UN SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) by 2030.
Highlights: 
i.The UNGC is a non-binding United Nations pact to encourage businesses and firms worldwide to adopt sustainable and socially responsible policies, and to report on their implementation. 

  • It an evolved framework of Corporate Governance driven sustainability. 

ii.It requires members to conduct business conforming to 10 principles encompassing elements such as human rights, labour, environment, and anti-corruption. 
iii.It also conducts the world’s largest  corporate responsibility initiatives which cover over 16,000 companies and 3,000 non-business signatories across 160 countries through over 70 local networks.

India & Oman Commit to Defence, Maritime Cooperation, Enhancing Trade Ties

The Sultanate of Oman’s Foreign Minister, Sayyid Badr bin Hamad bin Hamood Albusaidi, made an official visit to India at the invitation of India’s Foreign Minister, S. Jaishankar, and was accompanied by a high-level official delegation. He is visiting India for the first time after taking office as Oman’s Foreign Minister in August 2020.

  • India and Oman, the oldest strategic partner of India in the Gulf of Oman, decided to implement proposals in the space, mining, maritime, and science and technology sectors at the earliest to upgrade their ties.

Both countries, sharing the waters of the Arabian Sea, have reaffirmed their commitment and role as strategic partners in ensuring regional maritime safety and security.
Note: The India – Oman diplomatic relations were established in 1955 and the relationship was upgraded to Strategic Partnership in 2008.
Highlights:
i.Both Ministers have decided to hold:

  • The Joint Commission Meeting for Commerce Ministers, 
  • The India-Oman Strategic Consultative Group Meeting (Foreign Office Consultations),
  • The Strategic Dialogue, and 
  • The Joint Working Group on Labor 

ii. Defence Cooperation: It is one of the key pillars that holds the bilateral cooperation between India & Oman. Timely renewal of longstanding MoUs on Military Cooperation and maritime issues between the countries were welcomed.
11th Joint Military Cooperation Committee (JMCC) Meeting: Dr. Ajay Kumar, India’s Defence Secretary, and Dr. Mohammed Bin Nasser Bin Ali Al–Zaabi, Secretary General of Oman’s Ministry of Defence, co-chaired the 11th JMCC meeting in New Delhi in February 2022.

  • The Secretary General of Oman’s Ministry of Defence was the first foreign dignitary to board Vikrant – India’s Indigenous Aircraft Carrier.
  • Exchange of White Shipping information to increase the maritime domain awareness of both the countries was agreed.

iii.COVID-19 Cooperation: Oman was the first country in the region to accord approval to indigenously developed COVAXIN.
iv Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement (DTAA): A decision was made to conclude negotiations on the bilateral protocol on Investment, Avoidance of Double Taxation, and prevention of Fiscal Evasion with respect to Taxes on Income (DTAA).
v.India-Oman Joint Commemorative Stamp: An MoU was signed between India Post and Oman Post for the issuance of the India-Oman Joint Commemorative Stamp. 

  • The joint stamp will highlight the millennia-old shared cultural heritage between both countries and will be released in the last quarter of 2022.

Note: The Program of Scientific and Technological Cooperation between the two countries within the joint committee programmes was also signed.

IBBI Amends IBBI Voluntary Liquidation Process Regulations, 2017 To Streamline itIBBI amends voluntary liquidation process regulations to streamline it

i.In order to streamline the voluntary liquidation process of stressed firms, the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Board of India (IBBI) has amended the IBBI (Voluntary Liquidation Process) Regulations, 2017 “and will be called the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Board of India (Voluntary Liquidation Process) (Amendment) Regulations, 2022.
ii.This amendment was made by IBBI in exercise of the powers conferred by clause (t) of sub-section (1) of section 196 read with section 240 of the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code, 2016 (31 of 2016).
iii.The information for the same was provided through a notification by IBBI on April 5, 2022. Click here to Read 
iv.The period for the distribution of liquidation proceeds reduced to 30 days from the current six months.

Nepal Gets Approval to Export 364 MW Of Electricity To India During Rainy Season 

Nepal received permission to sell 39 Megawatt (MW) of electricity generated from Devghat and Trishuli power projects to India in November 2021. It again plans to sell 325 MW of electricity to the energy market in India, summing up with a total of 364 MW of electricity export in 2022 rainy season.

  • The concern to sell electricity in the Indian market is permitted by the Central Electricity Authority of India (CEA).

Demand Of Electricity:
i.Though Nepal faces an electricity crisis during its winter season. It imports an average of 300 MW of electricity from India.
ii.Nepal generates its majority of electricity from the rainy season through its rivers and hydropower projects centre such as Kali Gandaki, Marsyangdi, Middle Marsyangdi and Likhu 4 centre.
Surplus Electricity:
i.The surplus energy generated from Kali Gandaki, Marsyangdi, Middle Marsyangdi and Likhu 4 will be exported to India via 400 KV cross border transmission lines situated in Dhalkebar, Nepal.

  •  The 400KV Dhalkebar-Muzaffarpur Cross-border transmission line is the crucial power line for power trade between India and Nepal.

Note:
Prime Minister of Nepal Sher Bahadur Deuba made his first bilateral visit to India after becoming Prime Minister for the 5th time.

WWF Report: Online Illegal Wildlife Trade in Myanmar increased by 74% from 2020 to 2021

 According to the new World Wildlife Fund (WWF) report titled “Going viral: Myanmar’s wildlife trade escalates online 2021”, the online illegal wildlife trade in Myanmar has increased by 74% from 2020 to 2021. The report also revealed that the online trade of wildlife within Myanmar has been increasing. 
Gist of the report:
i.The reports also mentioned that the sale of mammal species (live animals or body parts) has increased by 241%. 
ii.The report states the species count rose from 143 in 2020 to 173 in 2021(i.e. 21 per cent increase over 2020 to 2021). 
iii.According to the 2021 survey conducted by Globescan and WWF, 85% of respondents from Myanmar supported efforts to close all high-risk markets selling animals from the wild, and 81% believed that this would be effective in preventing pandemics from happening in the future. 
Wildlife trade & zoonotic diseases:
i.Scientist estimates that 3 out of every 4 new or emerging infectious diseases in people come from animals and this would trigger 
ii.Severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS), swine flu (H1N1), avian flu (H5N1), and COVID-19, have all originated in animals and have proliferated in Asia in the past 20 years.
Key Findings of the report:
i.More than 11,046 products from 173 species were recorded for sale online in 2021, among which 54 are threatened with global extinction.
Among these, 6 species are listed as “Critically Endangered”  on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, which indicates an extremely high risk of extinction in the wild. A further, 7 species were marked “Endangered” and 33 marked “Vulnerable” on the IUCN Red List. 
ii.96% of posts were for live animals, with 87% advertising that animals had been taken from the wild.
iii.The largest online trading group had more than 19,000 members and over 30 posts a day.
iv.The number of traded species on the IUCN Red List rose 80% from 2020 to 2021.

  • Indian Institute of Technology(IIT)-Bombay ranked 65th and Indian Institute of Technology(IIT)- Delhi ranked 72nd, are the only Indian institutes to be featured among the top 100 ranks under the Engineering and Technology category. 
  • IIT Bombay has scored 79.9 and IIT Delhi has scored 78.9.

Massachusetts Institute of Technology has topped the list with a score of 96.5 followed by the University of Cambridge and the University of Oxford.

World Bank & AIIB To Provide Rs 7,500 Cr Loan to Mission School of Excellence Project in GujaratWorld Bank, AIIB to give Rs 7,500 cr loan for Guj govt's Mission School of Excellence project

The World Bank and Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) will provide a loan of Rs 7,500 crore to the government of Gujarat for its ‘Mission School of Excellence project’.

  • The ‘Mission Schools of Excellence’ will be implemented in the next five years at an estimated cost of Rs 10,000 crore.

Objective: 
The project aims to improve the quality of education, make infrastructure better  and build skills, which would help in generating more employment opportunities among youth across all districts in Gujarat.
Key points:
i.The Mission School of Excellence project was launched in 2021, under this, the government of Gujarat will spend Rs 10,000 crore in the next five years and cover all 35,133 government and 5,847 grant-in-aid schools in the state. 
ii.The funds will be spent on building 50,000 new classrooms, creating 1.5 lakh smart classrooms, 20,000 new computer labs and 5,000 tinkering labs in 41,000-odd government and grant-in-aid schools across the state.

Banks Report Frauds worth Rs 34,097 Crore in April-December 2021: RBI DataBanks Report Frauds Worth Rs 34,000 Crore

i.In accordance with the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) data, a total of 27 Scheduled Commercial Banks (SCBs) and Financial Institutions (FIs) have reported 96 cases of fraud, worth Rs 34,097 crore in the first  nine months of FY22 (April-December 2021).
ii.Punjab National Bank (PNB) recorded 10 frauds with the highest value worth Rs 4,820 crore.
iii.Bank of India (BoI) reported the highest number of frauds at 13, the cumulative value of those was Rs 3,925.
iv.India lost at least Rs 100 crore every day to bank fraud over the last seven years. Between April 1, 2015 and December 31, 2021, banking fraud worth Rs 2.5 lakh crore was detected across states. In this, Maharashtra topped the charts.

India’s Agriculture Exports Cross USD 50 Billion Mark for First Time

Exports of agricultural products from India surpassed the USD 50 billion mark for the first time during the financial year 2021-22 (FY22), owing to significant growth in sugar, rice, wheat, and other cereals exports.

  • The Directorate General of Commercial Intelligence and Statistics (DGCI&S), Ministry of Commerce & Industry, has released the provisional figures stating that agricultural exports rose to USD 50.21 billion in 2021-22, which is 19.92%.

The growth rate is significant since it exceeds the 17.66% growth rate of USD 41.87 billion obtained in 2020–21, and it was achieved despite unprecedented logistical obstacles such as high freight prices, container shortages, and so on.
Key Points:
i.The highest ever exports have been achieved for staples like Rice (USD 9.65 billion), wheat (USD 2.19 billion), Sugar (USD (4.6 billion) and other cereals (USD 1.08 billion).

  • Wheat has experienced remarkable increase of more than 273%, nearly quadrupling in value from USD 568 million in 2020-21 to USD 2119 million in 2021-22.

ii.The increase in exports of these products has benefitted farmers in states like Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra.

  • India has captured nearly 50% of the world market for rice.

iii. The export of marine products is also at an all-time high, with USD 7.71 billion benefitting to farmers in West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Maharashtra, and Gujarat.
iv.For the second year in a row, spice exports have surpassed USD 4 billion. 
v.Despite serious supply-side challenges, coffee exports have surpassed USD 1 billion for the first time, boosting revenue for coffee growers in Karnataka, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu.

  • The stake sale is subject to obtaining requisite regulatory approvals.  

Highlights: 
i.ISARC is the country’s first ARC (Asset Reconstruction Company) which is supported by a large number of public sector banks and undertakings.
ii.It mainly focuses  on NPA (Non Performing Asset) resolution of the MSME sector in India.
iii.It was established in 2008 and currently  sponsored by SIDBI (Small Industries Development Bank of India), Bank of Baroda, Punjab National Bank, and SIDBI Venture Capital Ltd.

Amazon has signed agreements with three companies – Arianespace, Blue Origin, and United Launch Alliance (ULA), to deploy the majority of satellites for its Project Kuiper, which aims to provide high-speed, low-latency broadband to a wide range of customers across the globe.

  • The company has finalized a total of 83 launches over a period of five years, which is one of the largest commercial procurement of launch vehicles in history.

i.Project Kuiper plans to launch two prototype missions later this year (2022) on ULA’s ABL Space Systems’ RS1 (Revolutionary Simplicity) rocket.
ii.The two prototype satellites – KuiperSat-1 and KupierSat-2, will include much of the technology and subsystems that power the production version of the company’s satellite design.
About the Contract:
i.The contract includes  –

  • 18 launches from Arianespace’s Ariane 6 rocket.
  • 12 launches using Jeff Bezos-owned Blue Origin’s New Glenn, with options for up to 15 additional launches.
  • 38 launches on Vulcan Centaur, ULA’s newest heavy-lift launch vehicle.

Note:
i.Amazon’s Project Kuiper was approved by the United States Federal Communications Commission in July 2020, with a constellation of 3,236 satellites in low Earth orbit (LEO). Later the company revealed its low-cost customer terminal for Project Kuiper, capable of delivering speeds up to 400 Mbps.

Astronomers detect identical twin of Jupiter K2-2016-BLG-0005Lb

Jupiter has an identical twin about 17,000 light-yrs away (1)
Astronomers have discovered an identical twin of Jupiter dubbed as K2-2016-BLG-0005Lb, Which has similar mass and is at a similar location (420 million miles away) from its star as Jupiter is from our Sun (462 million miles away).

  • The study has been published as a preprint on ArXiv.org and submitted to the journal Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society.

i.The exoplanet is about 17,000 light-years from the Earth, and it was first detected by Kepler space telescope in 2016.
ii.To spot the planet, scientists used Albert Einstein’s Theory of Relativity and Gravitational Microlensing.
Note:
i.K2-2016-BLG-0005Lb is “the first bound microlensing exoplanet to be discovered from space-based data.

India wins bid to host Asian Junior & Cadet Fencing Championships 2023

The Fencing Association of India(FAI) has won the bid to host the Asian Junior & Cadet Fencing Championship 2023. India made the bid during the Annual General Body Meeting of the Fencing Confederation of Asia at Hamdan Sports Complex, Dubai, the United Arab Emirates(UAE). 

  • This will be the first time for India to host a fencing event of this magnitude. 
  • India will host the Asian Junior Under 20(U-20) Men & Women and Cadet Under-17(U-17) Boys & Girls Fencing Championships 2023 in Ahmedabad (Host City), Gujarat. The tournament will take place in March or April 2023.

  • Every year on or around 7th April the UN organizes commemorative events at its Headquarters and at UN offices around the world.
  • The 2022 commemorations are organized in partnership with the Permanent Delegation of Rwanda to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization(UNESCO).

The year 2022 marks the 28th anniversary of the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda.

TSF inks MoU with Jharkhand government to set up ITI at Chandil, JharkhandTSF signs MoU with Jharkhand govt to set up ITI at Chandil

On April 06, 2022, Tata Steel Foundation (TSF) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Jharkhand government to set-up the Industrial Training Institute (ITI) at Chandil in the Seraikela-Kharsawan district, Jharkhand.

  • The objective was to shape more young talents of Jharkhand and make them industry ready.

i.The MoU was signed by Sourav Roy, Chief, Corporate Social Responsibility, Tata Steel and Satyanand Bhokta, Jharkhand Labour, Employment, Training and Skill Development Minister.
ii.The proposed ITI at Chandil will offer training in both technical and vocational courses, with an initial intake of 100 students and will begin functioning from 2023 academic session.
iii.The technical courses include electrical, fitter, turner and welders for a duration of two years.
