- The liquidity deficit has arisen due to a negative balance of payments in Q3FY25, totaling USD 23 billion, driven by continued outflows from foreign portfolio investors (FPI) and the RBI’s dollar sales in the market to stabilize the rupee.

SBI Report reveals India’s GDP to Drop below 6.5% in FY25According to State Bank of India (SBI)’s Economic Research Department (ERD) report released on 29th November 2024, India’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is most likely to drop below 6.5% for the current Financial Year 2024-25 (FY25) as GDP growth in the 2nd Quarter (Q2: July-September) of FY25 slowed to 5.4%.
- India’s GDP growth plunged below 6.0% in Q2FY25 after 7 quarters is mainly attributed by sluggish growth in the industry sector which decelerated to 6-quarters low to 3.6% in Q2 of the current financial year.
Key Findings:
i.As per the report, India’s real GDP growth in the 1st Half (H1FY25) was at 6.0%, so it has projected that India’s GDP growth in H2FY25 will be in the range of 6.5% to 6.8%.
- This slowdown in GDP growth in H1FY25 is mainly due to the slowdown in manufacturing sector which significantly impacted the overall economic performance.
ii.The report highlighted that the incremental growth in the industry sector was just Rs 42,515 crore in Q2FY25 compared to Rs 1.4 lakh crore in Q2 of the previous financial year, registered a decline of around Rs 1lakh crore in incremental terms in overall industry.
iii.As per the report, Agriculture sector registered the growth of 3.5% in Q2FY25 as against the growth of 1.7% in Q2FY24.
- But, still this stable growth in agriculture sector is unable to push India’s overall growth as its weighted contribution is only 40 basis points (bps).
iv.The growth in services sector has increased by 7.1% in Q2FY25, slightly higher than 6.0% in Q2FY24 but almost negligible growth compared to 7.2% growth in preceding quarter of FY25.
v.As per the report, the Gross Value Added (GVA) grew by 5.6% while nominal GDP grew by 8% in Q2FY25.

Morgan Stanley Lowered India’s GDP Growth to 6.3% from 6.7% for FY25Morgan Stanley, an American multinational investment bank, has lowered its Gross Domestic Product (GDP) projection for India to 6.3% for the Financial Year 2024-25 (FY25), down from its previous estimate of 6.7%.
- This downward projection came following India’s GDP slowed to 7-quarter low i.e. to 5.4% Year-on-Year (Y-o-Y) in 2nd Quarter (Q2: July-September) of FY25.
- This GDP growth in Q2FY25 was below the 6.7% growth registered in the previous quarter of FY25 and also fell below Morgan Stanley’s projection of 6.3%, as well as the consensus estimate of 6.5%.
Key Points:
i.The report noted that despite private consumption reported the growth of 6%, it outpaced capital expenditure(capex) which has increased only by 5.4%.
ii.As per Morgan Stanley, the services sector showed resilience as it registered the growth of 7.1%.
- The industry sector lagged behind with a growth rate of just 3.9%, and manufacturing and electricity are the two main contributors for slow growth in the industry sector.
iii.Despite this slow growth in Q2FY25, Morgan Stanley maintains a positive outlook about a rebound in the 2nd Half (H2FY25) as it has estimated that GDP will grow by 6.6%.
- It has outlined factors like: strong festive season, government spending, improved rural demand and easing financial conditions will help to drive the growth in the later of FY25.
iv.It has also projected that inflation, which remains above 6%, will ease to between 5-5.5% over the next two months.
v.Morgan Stanley outlined 3 main factors for sustained economic recovery:
- Government spending trends, specifically revenue and capital expenditure, and close monitoring of cash balances held with the RBI.
- Agricultural performance including kharif production and sowing of rabi crops, will impact food price volatility and rural demands.
- Domestic Liquidity and Financial conditions are important for overall economic activity.
