Overview of PM Narendra Modi’s Visit to Varanasi, UP  On August 2, 2025, Prime Minister(PM) Narendra Modi visited Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh (UP) to inaugurate and lay the foundation stone for multiple development projects worth around Rs.2,200 crore.

  • During the visit, he also released the 20th installment under the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN) scheme, transferring 20,500 crore directly into the bank accounts of over 9.7 crore farmers across India.

Key Initiatives Unveiled:
Infrastructure:PM Narendra Modi inaugurated and laid the foundation stones for several key road infrastructure projects, including the widening of the Varanasi–Bhadohi Road, Chhitauni–Shool Tankeshwar Road, and the construction of a Railway Overbridge at Hardattpur, UP.
Tourism and Heritage: Redevelopment initiatives were launched at eight riverfront ghats along with key heritage sites including Kalika Dham, Rangildas Kutiya, Durgakund, and Kardameshwar Mahadev Temple.
Water and Sanitation: He also inaugurated 47 Rural Drinking Water Schemes under Jal Jeevan Mission(JJM) .

Union Ministers Manohar Lal Khattar and Bhupender Yadav Preside the Launch of ‘Matri Van’ Initiative in Gurugram

On August 2, 2025, Union Minister Bhupender Yadav, Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change (MoEFCC) and Union Minister Manohar Lal Khattar, Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA), Ministry of Power (MoP) jointly launched the ‘Matri Van’ initiative, a theme-based forest, spread over 750 acres in the Aravalli Hills region in Gurugram, Haryana.

  • The event was hosted by the Haryana Forest Department as a part of Van Mahotsav 2025, conducted under the ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ programme.

About ‘Matri Van’ initiative:
Urban forest: ‘Matri Van’ meaning “Mother’s Forest”, is a theme-based urban forest project, envisioned as a unique ecological and cultural space that will contribute to biodiversity, public well-being, and urban sustainability.
Components: The main components of the ‘Matri Van’ initiative include the replacement of the existing bushes such as Kabuli Kikar (Prosopis juliflora) by plantation of Dhak/ Amaltash Trees, to restore the local ecology in the region.
Themes: The forest will feature a variety of themed sections showcasing diverse trees and plants. These include Bodhi Vatika, Bamboosetum, Aravalli Species Arboretum, Pushp Vatika, Sugandh Vatika, Medicinal Plants Vatika, Nakshtra Vatika, Rashi Vatika, a Cactus Garden, and a Butterfly Garden.

8 Cooperatives Joined Hands to Launch ‘Bharat’ Taxi Service by December 2025

In August 2025, India’s cooperative sector plans to launch a taxi service under the brand name ‘Bharat’ by December 2025. This new taxi service is expected to challenge ride-hailing giants Ola and Uber.

  • This newly announced initiative is supported by Rs 300 crore authorised capital and having already onboarded 200 drivers, with 50 each from 4 states: Delhi, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh (UP) and Maharashtra.

In August 2025, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), in consultation with the Ministry of AYUSH (Ayurveda, Yoga & Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha, and Homeopathy), released a definitive list of Ayurvedic food preparations under the category A “Ayurveda Aahara”.

In July 2025,Maharashtra Chief Minister(CM) Devendra Fadnavis inaugurated India’s first Artificial Intelligence (AI)-powered Anganwadi centre in Waddhamna village, Nagpur, Maharashtra.

Ministry of Mines Recognized 7 CoEs to Work under NCMMIn August 2025, the Ministry of Mines (MoM) has recognized 7 institutes, including 4 Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and 3 Research & Development (R&D) Labs as the Centres of Excellence (CoEs) under the National Critical Minerals Mission (NCMM).

  • This development came after the Project Approval and Advisory Committee (PAC) granted approval in its meeting, co-chaired by V.L. Kantha Rao, Secretary of the MoM, and Professor Abhay Karandikar, Secretary of the Department of Science & Technology (DST), Ministry of Science & Technology (MoS&T).

About 7 CoEs :
Names of IITs: The names of IITs which got recognition from MoM as CoEs are: IIT Bombay (IIT-B) (Maharashtra); IIT Hyderabad (Telangana); IIT-Indian School of Mines (ISM) Dhanbad (Jharkhand); and IIT Roorkee (IIT-R) (Uttarakhand).
Names of 3 R&D Labs: Council of Scientific & Industrial Research- Institute of Minerals and Materials Technology (CSIR-IMMT), Bhubaneswar (Odisha); CSIR-National Metallurgical (NML), Jamshedpur (Jharkhand); and Non-Ferrous Materials Technology Development Centre (NFTDC), Hyderabad (Telangana).
Key Functions: These CoEs will Initiate innovative and transformational research to bolster and advance the country’s science and technology capability in the area of critical minerals.
Funding: The CoEs recognized under NCMM will be funded on a project basis by various government R&D schemes, industry and venture investors.

India’s Marine Fish Catch Drops 2% in 2024, Gujarat Leads
In July 2025, Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR)- Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) released a report titled “ICAR-CMFRI Annual Report 2024”. As per the report, India’s marine fish catch recorded a decline of 2% in 2024 compared to 2023, reaching 3.47 million tonnes.

  • Gujarat has topped the landings at 754,000 tonnes, followed by Tamil Nadu (TN) with 679,000 tonnes and Kerala (610,000 tonnes).

Recorded Fish Catch:
Species: Among the fish species, Indian mackerel was the biggest marine resource, with a record of total catch of 2.63 lakh tonnes, followed by oil sardine (241,000 tonnes).

  • Pelagic species account for 54% of total landings, followed by demersal fishes, crustaceans, and molluscs.

Progress: Species, including lesser sardines, penaeid shrimps, anchovies, and tune have seen a progress compared to 2023.
Decline: Several species, including mackerel, threadfin breams, ribbonfish, non-penaeid shrimps and cephalopods recorded decline in fish catch.

BIAL Completed India’s Largest Unlisted NCDs Issuance worth Rs 9,000 Crore for Airport Expansion
In August 2025, the Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL), the Joint Venture (JV) company operating the Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru (Karnatka), has successfully completed the issuance of unlisted Non-Convertible Debentures (NCDs) in India’s airport sector, raising a total of Rs 9,000 crore.

  • The funds raised through issuance of NCDs will be used to refinance existing debt and support future infrastructure expansion.

ICAI Signed a MoU with IAGES to Strengthen Accreditation in Gold Industry
In August 2025, The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) under the administrative control of the Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MoCA) and Indian Association of Gold Excellence and Standards (IAGES) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to implement a robust accreditation framework for value chain partners in the gold industry, which currently includes an estimated 6 lakh partners across India.

  • The MoU was signed between Charanjot Singh Nanda, President of ICAI and Kaushlendra Sinha, Chief Executive Officer (CEO), IAGES in the presence of Union Minister Arjun Meghwal, Ministry of Law and Justice (MoL&J).

Former Jharkhand CM Shibu Soren Passed Away
On 4th August 2025, Shibu Soren, former Chief Minister (CM) of Jharkhand and founding patron of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), passed away at the age of 81 in New Delhi, Delhi.

  • He was born on 11 January 1944 in Nemra village, Bihar(now Jharkhand) and was a member of the Santal (Santhal) tribe.
  • Shibu Soren was widely referred to as ‘ ‘Dishoom Guru(Great Leader) or Guruji by the tribal communities of Jharkhand, reflecting their deep respect and admiration for him.

Indian Organ Donation Day 2025 – August 3
The Indian Organ Donation Day (IODD) is annually celebrated on 3rd August to commemorate the 1st successful deceased organ transplant in India. It is observed by the National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (NOTTO), under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare(MoHFW).

  • August 3, 2025, marks the 15th IODD observance in India.

Background:
Origin: The NOTTO started celebrating IODD in 2010, and until 2022, it was celebrated on 27 November.

  •  Later in 2023, IODD was moved to 3rd August, to mark the anniversary of India’s 1st successful heart transplant.

Osteoporosis: It is a progressive bone disease characterized by low bone density and bone mass. Such conditions can lead to a decrease in bone strength that can increase the risk of fractures (broken bones).
Osteoarthritis: It is a degenerative joint disease characterized by the breakdown of cartilage, which further leads to joint pain and stiffness.

In August 2025, Nara (N.) Chandrababu Naidu, Chief Minister (CM) of Andhra Pradesh (AP) formally launched the Annadata Sukhibhava- Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM KISAN) scheme at Veerayapalem in Prakasam district, AP.

  • During the event, AP CM also disbursed Rs 3,175 crore to 46.86 lakh farmers across the state as part of the 1st installment of the scheme.
  • Each eligible farmer received Rs 7,000 in 1st tranche, comprising Rs 5,000 from the State government (Rs 2,343 crore) and Rs 2,000 from the Government of India (GoI) (Rs 832 crore).

About Annadata Sukhibhava-PM KISAN Scheme:
Super Six Programe: The scheme is launched as part of the ‘Super Six’ set of poll promises made by the Telugu Desam Party (TDP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA)-Jana Sena state government in AP, which assured 3 free cooking gas cylinders per annum to each household under Deepam-II scheme; Rs 15,000 per annum for every school-going child; and monthly financial assistance of Rs 15,000 to women aged between 19 and 59 years, and others.
Annual Financial Assistance: Under this scheme, every eligible farmer will receive total Rs 20,000 per annum as financial assistance.
Funding: Of the annual financial assistance of Rs 20,000, the state government will provide Rs 14,0000 while the GoI will provide Rs 6,000 under PM-KISAN scheme.
Phase-wise distribution: The total amount under the scheme will be disbursed to eligible farmers in 3 installments for instance: Rs 7,000 in two tranches and Rs 6,000 in 3rd tranche.
Sukhibhava Portal/Toll-Free Number: During the launch event, AP CM Naidu advised the farmers to use the Sukhibhava portal, or call toll-free number ‘155251’ to register their complaints regarding any payment issues.

  • So far, total 59,750 grievances were registered under the Annadhata Sukhibhava scheme, of which 58,464 have already been resolved.
