Make in India Celebrates 10 Years: A Decade of Transformational GrowthOn 25th September 2024, “Make in India”, the flagship programme of the Government of India (GoI), completed a decade (10 years) of empowering India to become a global manufacturing hub. It has played a crucial role in boosting domestic manufacturing, fostering innovation, enhancing skill development, and facilitating foreign investment.
- Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi launched the “Make in India” initiative on 25th September, 2014 at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi, Delhi.
- It is being implemented by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), Ministry of Commerce & Industry (MoC&I).
MoC&I Introduced BRAP 2024 to Strengthen Make in India Initiative

MoHFW and ADB host the Climate & Health Solutions India Conclave with Strategic Insights for Future ActionOn 27th September 2024, Climate and Health Solutions (CHS) India Conclave, which was organised by the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare (MoHFW), in collaboration with the Asian Development Bank (ADB), held in New Delhi(Delhi).
- The 2-day conclave focused on the important issue of climate change and public health in India, by bringing together policymakers, experts, and stakeholders to develop actionable strategies for the health sector.
- The concluding day of the conclave hosted a series of insightful roundtables, which included in-depth discussions from participants on critical issues such as: Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs), Mental Health, Nutrition, Climate-Ready Healthcare Human Resources, the development of Climate-Resilient and Responsive Health Systems and Infrastructure, among others.
Key Dignitaries: Apurva Chandra, Secretary, MoHFW; LS Changsan, Additional Secretary, Public Health, MoHFW; Ayako Inagaki, Senior Director, Human and Social Development Sector Office and Dr. Dinesh Arora, Principal Health Specialist, Health Practice Team from ADB were present at the event.

i.Roundtable on “Climate Resilient and Responsive Health Systems and Infrastructure”: This round table was attended by over 330 participants, and was chaired by representatives from 19 states and Union Territories (UTs), including Andhra Pradesh (AP), Assam, Gujarat, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu (TN).
- The session highlighted the urgent need for adaptive infrastructure capable of tolerating the increasing frequency of extreme weather events.
ii.Roundtable on “NCDs, Nutrition and Mental Health”: During the session, Dr. Cherian Varghese discussed the Kerala floods and how climate change is affecting the social determinants of NCDs, particularly livelihoods, access to health care, among others.
iii.Roundtable on “Blended Finance for Climate-Health Bold Bets”: During the session, Jaya Singh, Policy and Programme Lead for the Asia Pacific region at Foreign, Commonwealth, & Development Office, the United Kingdom (UK), emphasized the government’s role in establishing regulations and safeguards for private sector investors in climate and health.
- The session also demonstrated innovations on the conclave sub-thematic areas, such as a Climate Risk Observatory Tool for heat and health mapping and management, Pluss Technologies, Blackfrog Technologies and Redwings for climate resilient health infrastructure and the work of Artificial Intelligence & Robotics Technology Park (ARTPARK), Indian Institute of Science (IISC) Bengaluru, Karnataka for climate and health Early Warning Systems (EWS).

PM Modi Launches IFSC Single Window System Developed By DEV ITOn 16th September 2024, Prime Minister(PM) Narendra Modi launched the ‘Single Window IT (SWIT)’ platform developed by Dev Information Technology Limited (DEV IT) under the guidance of the International Financial Services Centres Authority (IFSCA) during the event held in Ahmedabad, Gujarat.
- This state-of-the-art online platform aims to simplify bureaucratic procedures and enhance transparency for entities setting up operations in the IFSCs.
About SWIT:
i.The System brings together different Government Agencies & Regulators on a single digital platform, including Department of Commerce under Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Department of Revenue under Ministry of Finance, Reserve Bank of India (RBI), Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) and Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI).
ii.SWIT System enables applicants to submit applications, obtain approvals, and fulfil approval related regulatory requirements through digital means in a simple, seamless and secure manner.
iii.With the launch of SWIT System, applicants can now apply for license/ registration from IFSCA, under the relevant IFSCA Regulations and Frameworks, through the SWIT Platform.
iv.It has been created to provide a one-stop mechanism for the applicant entities to obtain all approvals required for setting up business operations in IFSC.

BEL Secures MCA Approval to Set Up JV with Israel Aerospace IndustriesBharat Electronics Ltd (BEL) has received approval from the Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA) to establish a Joint Venture (JV) named “BEL IAI AeroSystems Private Limited” in collaboration with Israel Aerospace Industries Limited (IAI), Israel.
- BEL holds a 40% stake in the JV, while IAI owns the remaining 60%. The JV will operate both in India and Israel.
- The new entity marks a strategic development in BEL’s aerospace and defense sector.
Key Points:
i.This new JV will provide repair and maintenance services for the Medium-Range Surface to Air Missile (MRSAM) system used by India’s defense forces, therefore, act as a Single Point of Contact (SPOC) for MRSAM product support.
ii.The venture does not involve related party transactions with BEL’s promoters, but it will be considered a related party to BEL once established.
iii.Further regulatory approvals are required from the Ministry of Defence (MoD) (India) and the Committee of Ministries for Social & Economic Affairs (Israel).

MoP Unveils CSIRT–POWER Facility to Protect India’s Power Sector Against Cyber Threats
Union Minister Manohar Lal Khattar, Ministry of Power(MoP), inaugurated the Computer Security Incident Response Team – POWER (CSIRT–POWER) facility at Northern Regional Power Committee, Shaheed Jeet Singh Marg, Qutab Institutional Area in New Delhi, Delhi.
- CSIRT-POWER was developed since the existing sub-sectoral Computer Emergency Response Teams (CERTs) lack legal mandate, resources, and skilled professionals to address cybersecurity incidents effectively.
i.CSIRT-POWER was developed to protect India’s power infrastructure from cyber threats.
ii.The creation of CSIRT-Power was initiated as part of the 100-day initiatives of the MoP in collaboration with Indian Computer Emergency Response Team(CERT-In), following the National Cyber Security Policy, 2013.
iii.It is equipped with advanced infrastructure, cutting-edge cybersecurity tools, and key resources.
iv.Key objectives:
- To collect, analyze, and share information regarding power sector-specific cyber threats.
- To promote sector-specific best practices, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and security policies.
INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS
India & Nepal Signed 12 MoUs for High Impact Community Development Projects in NepalOn 27th September 2024, India and Nepal signed 12 Memorandum of Understanding (MoUs) for High Impact Community Development Projects (HICDPs) in Nepal covering key sectors such as education, health, agriculture, drinking water and culture for strengthening bilateral ties.
- The projects will be supported by grant assistance of NRs (Nepalese Rupees) 474 million (approximately Rs 47.4 crore) by the Government of India (GoI)
Signatories: The MoUs were signed by the Embassy of India in Kathmandu, the Ministry of Federal Affairs and General Administration of Nepal, and various Project Implementing Agencies of the Government of Nepal.
About the 12 HICDPs:
i.The 12 HICDPs include the construction of
- School buildings in Okhaldhunga, Dailekh, Saptari, Morang, Chitwan, and Sunsari.
- Arun Multipurpose Foundation Building in Bhojpur.
- Water supply project in Solukhumbu.
- Building for the Agriculture Promotion Centre in Bajura.
- Health post-birthing centre in Dhading.
- Operation theatre building for the Rapti Eye Hospital in Dang.
ii.These projects will be executed by local authorities under the Government of Nepal.
iii.These will improve the educational infrastructure, healthcare services, water supply, agricultural storage, and cultural amenities for local communities.
Points to note:
i.India has undertaken a total of 563 high-impact community development projects in Nepal since 2003.
ii.490 of these projects have been completed and the remaining projects are in various stages of completion.
iii.These HICDPs highlight India’s commitment towards strengthening Nepal’s infrastructure and contributing to the Nepal’s overall development.

Fossil Fuel Dominance in Electricity Generation to end by 2030: RBI reportThe Reserve Bank of India (RBI), in its latest report, forecasts that the dominance of fossil fuels in India’s electricity generation will end by 2030, with renewable energy expected to surpass 50% of global electricity generation.
- This transition is seen as critical for achieving sustainability goals and addressing climate challenges.
Key Points:
i.The rise of cleaner power generation will address “hard-to-abate” sectors like steelmaking and aviation, where low-carbon alternatives are still emerging.
ii.The RBI emphasized the need for increased investment in low-carbon energy, for every United States Dollar(USD) that goes to fossil fuels, an average of USD 3 needs to be invested in low-carbon energy over the remainder of the decade.
iii.Tripling renewable energy capacity by 2030 is crucial to meeting global net-zero emission targets by mid-century.
iv.A fully decarbonized global energy system by 2050 is estimated to cost USD 215 trillion.
v.The report stressed the importance of balancing public policy interventions and market-based competition to ensure a successful energy transition.

Alexander Dunn Awarded 2024 SASTRA Ramanujan PrizeAlexander Dunn, a prominent mathematician from Georgia Institute of Technology, the United States of America (USA), has been awarded the 2024 SASTRA Ramanujan Prize instituted by the Shanmugha Arts, Science, Technology & Research Academy (SASTRA), a private deemed university in Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu (TN).
- He is recognized for his significant work in analytic number theory, especially his collaboration with Maksym Radziwill in solving the Kummer-Patterson Conjecture, which pertains to bias in cubic Gauss sums.
Note: The award will be presented during the International Conference on Number Theory at SASTRA University in Kumbakonam, Thanjavur from 20-22 December 2024.

Tata Motors to build 150 WhAP Armoured Vehicles for MoroccoTata Advanced Systems Ltd (TASL) and the Royal Armed Forces of the Kingdom of Morocco signed a contract to locally manufacture 150 Wheeled Armoured Platform (WhAP) Combat vehicles for Moroccan Defence forces.
- The delivery will be completed over a period of 3 years.
- This contract marks the largest deal of Indian-made armoured vehicle, both domestically and internationally.

WhAP is designed and developed indigenously in collaboration with the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Tata Motors.

i.WhAP is an amphibious wheeled combat vehicle that aligns with global trends.

Chandrayaan-3 Vikram Lander Landed Within a Buried Impact Crater
Scientists from the Physical Research Laboratory (PRL) and Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) stated that India’s Lunar Mission, Chandrayaan-3 with the Vikram-lander and the Pragyan rover, has landed within a buried impact crater of diameter 160 kilometres (Km) and 4.4 km deep.
- The crater is expected to be one of the oldest craters on the Moon (older than the South Pole Atkin (SPA) basin, an ancient and the largest impact basin in the Solar System).
i.The details of the study titled, ‘Chandrayaan-3 landing site evolution by South Pole-Aitken basin and other impact craters’, published in the peer-reviewed journal Icarus.
ii.The study was based on an analysis of images obtained by Navigation Cameras on Chandrayaan-3 Pragyan rover and Chandrayaan-2 Orbiter’s Optical High Resolution Camera.
iii.The lunar mission was landed on the high latitude highland region near the south pole of the Moon located ~350 km from the SPA basin rim.
iv.The geomorphological and topographical analysis shows that this semi-circular structure is a heavily degraded crater structure or a buried impact crater.
- This semi-circular structure encompassed the station, Shiv Shakti (yellow star).
Earth Gets a Temporary ‘Mini-moon’: Asteroid 2024 PT5 to Orbit Earth for 2 Months
Earth has gained a temporary “mini-moon”, an asteroid named ‘2024 PT5’, which will revolve around Earth from 29th September 2024 until 25th November 2024. This will revolve in a horseshoe shape for around 55 days and then escape Earth’s gravitational pull without completing the full revolution.
- 2024 PT5, captured by Earth’s gravitational pull, is around 10 meters in diameter. This won’t be visible to the naked eye.
- It originates from the Arjuna asteroid belt, which comprises a collection of space rocks that share similar orbits with our planet.
i.The 2024 PT5 was discovered with the help of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA)-funded Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System (ATLAS).
ii.This Near Earth object (NEO) is the 5th detected mini-moon of Earth. The 1st mini-moon, 1991 VG, was spotted in 1991.
iii.The findings about this mini-moon was published in the journal “Research Notes of the American Astronomical Society”.

International Day for Universal Access to Information 2024 – September 28 The United Nations (UN)’s International Day for Universal Access to Information (IDUAI) is annually observed across the globe on 28th September to create awareness about the significance of universal access to information.
- The day acts as a platform to assess progress made in promoting access to information since the adoption of the UN Sustainable Development Agenda.
- 28th September 2024 marks the 5th observance of UN’s IDUAI.
Significance:
i.IDUAI is hosted by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the Broadband Commission, Civil society Organizations, Non-Governmental Organizations, Academics and individuals.
ii.This also enables a positive environment for Access To Information (ATI) to flourish through the development of projects.
Background:
i.The day was proclaimed by the UNESCO General Conference in 2015, following the adoption of the 38 C/Resolution 57
ii.In October 2019, the 74th United Nations General Assembly(UNGA) adopted the resolution A/RES/74/5 and proclaimed the 28th of September of every year as the International Day for Universal Access to Information (IDUAI) at the UN level.
- The first ever UN-Level IDUAI was observed on 29th September 2020.
Note: Since 2016, the celebration of the IDUAI by UNESCO spanned from 20 to 26 countries.
2024 Global Conference:
i.The government of Ghana and UNESCO jointly hosted the ‘2024 Global Conference on Universal Access to Information’ from 1-2 October 2024 in Accra, Ghana. The conference aligns with the annual observance of IUDAI.
- The theme of the 2024 conference is “Mainstreaming Access to Information and Participation in the Public Sector”.
ii.The IDUAI 2024 Global Conference aims to explore how mainstreaming ATI laws across government sectors can enhance the right to information.
Universal Access to Information:
i.Universal Access to Information means everyone has the right to seek, receive and impart information.
ii.This is an integral part of the right to freedom of expression, bound up with the right to freedom of the press and the corollary right to media freedom.

Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka signs MOU for Wildlife protection and Forest ManagementOn 27 September 2024, Andhra Pradesh(AP) and Karnataka have entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to address wildlife and forest management challenges at an Inter-State coordination meeting in Vijayawada, AP.
- Aim: To strengthen cross-border conservation efforts, mitigate human-animal conflicts, and promote sustainable forest management practices.
- The two states have agreed to deploy an expert team for elephant capture, mahout training programmes in running elephant camps, knowledge transfer, Standard Operating Procedures for darting, capturing (animals) , nutrition and food, and workshops and seminars.

The MoU was signed by A.P. Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (PCCF) and Head of Forest Force (HoFF) Chiranjeevi Choudhary, and Karnataka PCCF and HoFF Brijesh Kumar Dixit in the presence of AP’s Deputy Chief Minister(CM), K. Pawan Kalyan and Eshwar B. Khandre, Forest Minister of Karnataka.
Key points:
i.The Karnataka government will train 25 Mahouts and Kavadis identified by the AP government to improve their skills in handling and managing Kumki elephants.
ii.Both states will establish a joint task force for wildlife conservation and protection, including efforts to prevent illegal activities such as poaching and forest degradation.
iii.The MoU emphasizes collaborative efforts to conserve forests, focusing on preventing deforestation, curbing illegal logging, and promoting reforestation initiatives.
iv.Both states will work together to train tribal communities in forest management and eco-friendly livelihoods, creating sustainable economic opportunities for local populations.
v.The states will work together to curb illegal activities like red sanders smuggling in Andhra Pradesh and sandalwood smuggling in Karnataka.

Maharashtra Approves to Rename Pune Airport as Jagadguru Sant Tukaram Maharaj Airport
The Government of Maharashtra has approved renaming the Pune International Airport located in Lohegaon as the ‘Jagadguru Sant Tukaram Maharaj Airport’ during the cabinet meeting chaired by Eknath Shinde, Chief Minister(CM) of Maharashtra.
- Jagadguru Sant Tukaram Maharaj was a revered 17th-century Hindu saint and poet from Maharashtra who played a major role in the Bhakti movement through his devotional poetry, known as Abhanga
- The proposal for the renaming has been put forward to the Union Cabinet for final approval.
