North India’s First Industrial Biotech Park Inaugurated in Kathua, J&K

North India’s first biotech park inaugurated in J-K’s Kathua

On May 28 2021, Union Territory (UT) of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) Lieutenant Governor, Manoj Sinha and Jitendra Singh, Minister of State for Science and Technology and Earth Sciences, inaugurated North India’s first Industrial Biotech Park at Ghatti in the Kathua District of UT of J&K. The Biotech Park will act as a hub for incubation of new ideas.

  • It will carry out research on biodiversity, medicinal and aromatic plants of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, and it will also promote green category businesses.
  • The project will be implemented by the Council Of Scientific And Industrial Research – Indian Institute of Integrative Medicine, (CSIR-IIIM) Jammu, UT of J&K.

Key Points:
i.Kathua district has been chosen because of its resource richness with diversity as well as its geographical location and is destined to be North India’s Startup destination with a potential to produce 25 startups in a year.
ii.The Biotech Park would act as a robust platform to support the Agri-entrepreneurs, Startups, progressive farmers, scientists, scholars and students of UT of J&K, Ladakh and also to the nearby states.
iii.It has facilities such as herbal extraction, fermentation, analytical lab, distillation, micro propagation, plant tissue culture, besides the provision of technology incubation, training and skill development.
iv.The Biotech Parks of UT of J&K are among 9 Biotechnology Parks supported by the Department of Biotechnology under the Ministry of Science and Technology in various States of India.
v.The Ministry of Science and Technology and J&K Science, Technology and Innovation council in February 2019, had jointly funded the work to set up two Industrial Biotech Parks – One at Ghatti in Kathua district of UT of J&K and the other in Handwara, a town in Kupwara district of UT of J&K.

i.The Indian biotech industry is among the top 12 destinations in the world and ranks second in Asia after China.

Highlights of Hungary’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó’s Visit to India; Hungary Became New Member of ISAVisit of H.E. Mr. Péter Szijjártó, Minister of Foreign Affairs & Trade

On May 26-27, 2022, Péter Szijjártó, Hungary’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, paid an official visit to India at the invitation of India’s External Affairs Minister (EAM), Dr. S. Jaishankar. Péter Szijjártó was accompanied by a high-level business delegation.
The India-Hungary Business Forum 2022 was inaugurated on May 27, 2022, in New Delhi (Delhi), by Meenakashi Lekhi, Minister of State for External Affairs, Government of India and the visiting Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs & Trade, Péter Szijjártó.

  • The event, co-chaired by Péter Szijjártó & Meenakashi Lekhi, is seen as a significant step in unleashing the full trade and investment potential of India and Hungary. It was attended by leading business representatives from both countries.
  • Péter Szijjártó has identified 4 key areas for stronger India-Hungary relations: political issues, people-to-people contact, contractual conditions, and extending a 550-million-euro Line of Credit (LOC), exclusively to support India-Hungary business-to-business cooperation.
  • On the occasion of the India-Hungary Business Forum 2022 in New Delhi, India’s External Affairs Minister (EAM) Dr. S. Jaishankar and Hungary’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Péter Szijjártó, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on the International Solar Alliance (ISA).After which, Hungary became the newest member of the International Solar Alliance (ISA).

NCTE Launches Portal To Streamline the Recognition Process of Teacher Education Programs
National Council for Teacher Education launches portal to streamline the processThe National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE), a part of the Ministry of Education, has launched an online site to streamline the entire process of HEIs/TEIs recognizing their teacher education programmes, from inviting applications for courses to issuing recognition orders, which includes inspection of institutions.
Key Information
i.A new online portal has been launched whose main objective is to streamline the entire process of recognition of teacher education programs in Higher Educational Institutions/Teacher Educational Institutions (HEIs/TEIs).
ii.The portal would cover works which commences from invitation of the application for courses till the stage of issue of recognition orders,  including the inspection of institutions.
iii. This portal would bring a paradigm shift in the functioning of NCTE as the portal utilises an automated robust framework which would enhance accountability, transparency and ease of doing business.
iv.Integrated Teacher Education Programme (ITEP) would be processed through this newly launched portal.
v.All communication from HEIs/TEIs regarding deficiencies/SCN will correspondingly have to be sent on the ITEP portal.

C-CAMP signs MoU with CFTRI to promote innovation in agriculture

The Centre for Cellular and Molecular Platforms (C-CAMP), India’s premier bio-innovation hub has signed a Memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Centre for Food Technological Research Institute (CFTRI) to nurture deep science innovation in agriculture, food technology and allied areas.

  • The MoU was signed by Dr. Taslimarif Saiyed, the CEO and Director of C-CAMP and Dr. Sridevi Annapura Singh, Director, CFTRI in Mysuru, Karnataka.
  • The agreement will help identify and foster agri innovations and agri entrepreneurships towards sustainability and food security in India’s agri sector.

India’s 1st Rural Tribal Technical Training Program Inaugurated in Bhopal, MP

Rajeev Chandrashekhar, Union Minister of State (MoS), Ministry of Skill Development launched the Pilot Project for Skilling Tribal Youth – India’s 1st Rural Tribal Technical Training Program at the Centre for Research and Industrial Staff Performance (CRISP), Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh (MP). 

  • The project aims to train around 250 beneficiaries of 17 clusters of 17 districts selected from 6 states of India – Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Maharashtra and Odisha and will be organized at Vikas Bharti, Gumla, Jharkhand.
  • The beneficiaries will be trained in 5 disciplines: electrical and solar energy, agricultural mechanization, e-governance, plumbing and masonry, and 2-wheeler repair and maintenance. 

GoI Announced Formation of Cotton Council of India Under the Chairmanship of Suresh Bhai Kotak

The Government of India(GoI) has announced the formation of the Cotton Council of India under the Chairmanship of renowned veteran cotton man Suresh Bhai Kotak. The committee will have representatives from several Ministries such as Textiles, Agriculture, Commerce, and Finance along with representatives from Cotton Corporation of India and Cotton Research Institute.

  • The announcement regarding the council was made during the meeting with stakeholders from the cotton value chain held under the chairmanship of Piyush Goyal, Union Minister of Textiles.

Overview of World Economic Forum Annual Meeting 2022 held in Davos, Switzerland World Economic Forum Annual Meeting 2022

i.On 22-26, May 2022, the 52nd Annual World Economic Forum (WEF) Annual Meeting was held in Davos-Klosters, Graubunden, Switzerland on the theme ‘Working Together, Restoring Trust’. Originally, it was scheduled on January 17-21, 2022, but due to uncertainty over the outbreak of the Omicron variant, it was postponed.
ii.It brought together the foremost business, government and civil society leaders in nearly 450 sessions. 
iii.In accordance with the ‘Edelman Trust Barometer Special Report: The Geopolitical Business’, Indian companies (89%, with a gain of 4% since January 2022)  have emerged as the most trusted by the domestic population, followed by China, Canada, the United States (US) and the United Kingdom (UK).
iv.The Digital Cooperation Organization (DCO) and WEF signed an agreement to launch a new initiative to boost flows of digital foreign direct investments globally. Both entities will work together to identify methods to increase digital adoption, investment in new digital activities, and investment in digital infrastructure.
v.WEF is building a ‘Global Collaboration Village’ as the virtual future of public-private cooperation, in collaboration with Accenture and Microsoft.

LIC Launches Savings Life Insurance Plan Bima RatnaLic Unveils Savings Life Insurance Plan Bima Ratna

The Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC), India’s largest insurer, has launched “Bima Ratna” – a non-linked, non-participating, individual, savings life insurance plan.

  • The new plan, which is aimed at the domestic market, provides both protection and savings.

Key Features of LIC’s Bima Ratna Plan:
i.Bima Ratna can be purchased through Corporate Agents, Insurance Marketing Firms (IMF), Brokers, Common Public Service Centres (CPSC-SPV), and Point of Sales Person-Life Insurance (POSP-LI) employed by these intermediaries namely Corporate Agents, Insurance Marketing Firms (IMF), and Brokers
ii.The key features of the plan include Death Benefit, Survival Benefit, Maturity Benefit, Guaranteed Additions, Settlement Options, Grace Period and Revival solutions among other things.

  • The Bima Ratna plan from LIC provides financial assistance to the policyholder’s family in the case of the policyholder’s untimely death during the policy term.

iii. It offers for periodic payments for the policyholder’s survival at specified intervals to address various financial demands.
The plan also addresses liquidity requirements through a loan facility.
iv.Premiums can be paid on a yearly, half-yearly, quarterly, or monthly basis (monthly premiums can only be paid through the National Automated Clearing House (NACH)) or by deductions from salary.
v.Death Benefits :The sum assured on death as the higher than 125% of the Basic Sum Assured or 7 times of annualized premium. This death benefit payment will not be less than 105% of total premiums paid (excluding any extra premium, any rider premium (s), and taxes) up to the date of death.

Stashfin, a neobanking platform of Akara Capital Advisors Private Limited, has launched LiveBoundless, a credit line card, especially for women. The new card offers cashback rewards, welcome credits, free ATM(Automated Teller Machine) withdrawals and several other deals. 

  • The other value-added services include, 1% cashback on every spend to benefits worth Rs 5,000 in the 1st year, and a free credit period for select customers. 
  • According to a Statista study, the volume of the Indian credit card market has increased to 57.7 million in FY2020 from 37.5 million in FY2018 and became 62 million in FY2021.

IMF Increased Weight of US Dollar & Chinese Yuan in SDR basket

The International Monetary Fund(IMF) has increased its weighting of the United States(US) Dollar and Chinese yuan in its review of the currencies that make up the valuation of its Special Drawing Rights (SDR), an international reserve asset.
This marks the first review since the yuan (also known as renminbi) joined the basket of currencies in 2016.

  • The weighting of the United States Dollar increased to 43.38% from 41.73% and the weighting of the yuan increased to 12.28% from 10.92%. 
  • The weighting of the Euro (from 30.93% to 29.31%), Japanese Yen (8.33% to 7.59%) and the British pound (8.09% to 7.44%) has decreased. 
  • The weighting was determined by the executive board based on the trade and financial market developments from 2017 to 2021.

Note: The updated weightings will take effect on 1st August 2022.

US Overtakes China as India’s Largest Trading Partner in FY22US surpasses China as India's biggest trading partner in FY22

The United States (US) has surpassed China to become India’s top trading partner in 2021-22, showing the growth of India-US economic ties.
According to data from the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, bilateral trade between the United States and India reached USD 119.42 billion in 2021-22, up from USD 80.51 billion in 2020-21.
Backdrop:
i.Exports to the United States soared to USD 76.11 billion in 2021-22, up from USD 51.62 billion in 2020-21, while imports increased to USD 43.31 billion in 2021-22, up from USD 29 billion the 2020-21 fiscal year.
ii.In the most recent fiscal year (FY22), exports to China climbed considerably to USD 21.25 billion, up from USD 21.18 billion in 2020–21, while imports increased from around USD 65.21 billion in 2020-21 to USD 94.16 billion.

  • The trade deficit widened from USD 44 billion in 2020-21 to USD 72.91 billion in 2021-22.

India’s Trade Surplus with the United States (US) 
i.The US is one of the few countries with whom India enjoys a trade surplus. India had a trade surplus of USD 32.8 billion with the US in 2021-22.
ii.Bilateral trade between India & the US is anticipated to grow in the future years, according to trade experts, as both countries deepen their economic ties.

  • India has joined a US-led initiative to establish the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework (IPEF), which will help to strengthen economic ties.

India’s Top Trading Partners 2021-22
i.From 2013–14 to 2017–18, and again in 2020–21, China was India’s most important trading partner. Prior to China, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) was India’s largest trading partner.
ii.In 2021-22, the UAE) is India’s third largest trading partner with USD 72.9 billion. It is followed by Saudi Arabia (USD 42.85 billion) as 4th, Iraq (USD 34.33 billion) as 5th, & Singapore (USD 30 billion) as its 6th largest trading partner.

7th Forbes 30 Under 30 Asia list 2022 Released; India Tops with 61 EntriesForbes declared its seventh annual “30 Under 30 Asia” list

Forbes magazine has released the 7th edition of the Forbes 30 Under 30 Asia List 2022, featuring 10 categories each honouring 30 individuals under the age of 30.
The list was edited by Rana Wehbe Watson. 

  • The honourees on the list represent 22 countries and territories across the Asia-Pacific region. 
  • India tops the list in terms of the number of entries with 61, followed by Singapore (34), Japan (33), Australia (32), Indonesia (30) and China (28).

Note:
The average age of the 2022 list is 26.8 and the youngest honouree on the list is 14-year old Japanese Olympics skateboarding gold-medalist Momiji Nishiya.

Noted filmmaker Sanjit Narwekar conferred with V Shantaram Lifetime achievement award at MIFF 2022

Eminent Documentary filmmaker and author Sanjit Narwekar was conferred with V Shantaram Lifetime achievement award at the 17th edition of the Mumbai International Film Festival of India (MIFF) 2022, for his contribution to films through his writings especially film history and the documentary film movement.
i.Union Minister of Commerce & Industry, Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution and Textiles Piyush Goyal and Minister of State for Information & Broadcasting, Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying Dr. L. Murugan along with other dignitaries presented the award to Sanjit Narwekar along with a cash prize of Rs 10 lakhs (Rs 1 million), Golden Conch and a citation.
ii.In commemoration to Bangladesh’s 50 years of Independence, it has been chosen as the ‘Country of Focus’ at MIFF 2022. A special package of 11 films from Bangladesh including the critically acclaimed film ‘Hasina- A Daughter’s Tale’ will be presented at MIFF 2022.
iii.Narwekar has written and edited more than 20 books on cinema, including ‘Marathi Cinema in Retrospect’, which got him the ‘Swarna Kamal’ at the National Film Awards. 
Note- The V Shantaram Lifetime achievement award is instituted in memory of legendary filmmaker Shantaram Rajaram Vankudre (V Shantaram).

RJ Umar receives Immunisation Champion award by UNICEF 

Radio Jockey Umar Nisar (RJ Umar) from South Kashmir, has been awarded the ’01 Best Content Award’ and the Immunization Champion award by United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) at the annual Radio4Child 2022 Awards in Mumbai, Maharashtra.
i.The award has been conferred to Umar for his work of providing awareness and countering rumours to reach audiences during the pandemic.
ii. The Radio4Child felicitated radio professionals from private FM and All India Radio from across the country for their commendable work during the COVID-19 pandemic as well as for routine vaccination.  

APPOINTMENTS & RESIGNATIONS       

Indian Women Boxer Lovlina Borgohain elected as Chairman and a Voting Member for IBA’s Athletes CommitteeBorgohain elected as IBA Athletes Committee Chair

As per the International Boxing Association (IBA), India’s Tokyo 2020 Olympics Bronze medallist Lovlina Borgohain has been selected as the Chairman and a voting member on the Board of Directors (BoD) for the IBA’s Athletes Committee.

  • The term of office for the newly elected Athletes’ Committee will be until the World Boxing Championships in 2025.
  • Shiva Thapa (IND) was appointed as vice chair of the IBA’s Athletes Committee.

Key Points:
i.During the election held at the 2022 Women’s World Championships Lovlina Borgohain received the highest number of votes.
ii.As a Chairman and a voting member ,she can promote Indian boxing, especially women boxing to other boxers of the world.
iii.In October 2021 ,the Indian male boxer Shiva Thapa has also been elected as a member of the IBA Athletes Committee following the election held during the 2021 IBA Men’s World Championships.
iv.The Duo were also under the Sports Authority of India’s Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS), which was formulated in 2014 with the aim to identify, groom and prepare potential medal prospects for Olympics.

Indian-origin Academic Dr Swati Dhingra Appointed to the MPC of Bank of England 

The United Kingdom(UK) Based Indian origin academic Dr Swati Dhingra, an Associate Professor of Economics at the London School of Economics (LSE), was appointed as an external member of the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC), the interest rate-setting committee of the Bank of England. 
She becomes the first Indian origin woman to be appointed as a member of the Bank of England.

  • On 9th August 2022, She will be joining the Bank of England’s MPC  for a 3-year term and she will replace the incumbent external member, Michael Saunders, who has been on the MPC since August 2016.  

SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY

 Russia Successfully Test-fires Zircon Hypersonic MissileRussia Test-fires Zircon Hypersonic Missile

On May 26 2022, Russia had successfully test fired its Zircon Hypersonic Cruise Missile, from the Admiral Gorshkov frigate of the Northern fleet in the Barents Sea of Arctic Ocean. The missile hits the sea target in the White Sea, travelling 1,000 kilometres (540 nautical miles).

  • The Zircon missile was the latest addition to Russia’s arsenal of weapons called ‘invincible’ by the President Vladimir Putin.

Key Points:
i.The Hypersonic missile has capacity to travel more than five times the speed of Sound and manoeuvre in mid-flight, making it harder to track and intercept than traditional projectiles.
ii.The Zircon hypersonic missile had undergone several tests which included the launch from the Admiral Gorshkov and from a submerged submarine.
iii.The Zircon missile will be joining the Avangard hypersonic glide vehicles that were put into service in 2019 and the air-launched Kinzhal (Dagger) missiles in Russia’s arsenal.
Note:
i.Russia had conducted the first Zircon test in October 2020, as part of a new generation of unrivalled arms systems.
ii.Also in April 2022,  Russia tested a new nuclear-capable intercontinental missile, the Sarmat, capable of carrying 10 or more warheads.

INS Gomati Decommissioned at Mumbai 

INS Gomati, oldest warrior of Western Fleet, decommissioned after 34 years

On May 28, 2022, The Indian Navy Ship (INS) Gomati was decommissioned from the naval dockyard at Mumbai, Maharashtra after 34 years of service.

Key Information
i.INS Gomati was named after the River Gomati. The ship is the third of the Godavari class guided-missile frigates and is the oldest warrior of the Western Fleet.
ii.The warship was inducted on April 16, 1988 and was inducted by former Union defence minister KC Pant at Mazagon Dock Limited, Bombay.
iii. In addition to the several other bilateral and multinational naval exercises, INS Gomati also took part in several operations which include Operation Cactus, Parakram, and Indradhanush.
iv.INS Gomati would be displayed in an open-air museum on the picturesque banks of river Gomati in Lucknow, where many of its combat systems would be displayed as military and war relics.
v.IMS Gomati was awarded the coveted Unit Citation, in 2007-08 and 2019-20 for its remarkable service of maritime security.

Formula 1: Red Bull’s Sergio Perez won Monaco F1 Grand Prix 2022 
F1 Red Bull's Sergio Perez wins Monaco GP

The Red Bull racing driver Sergio Pérez (Mexican) has won the Formula 1 (F1) Grand Prix (GP) De Monaco 2022 with 25 points, held at Circuit de Monaco, Monaco, Europe. The event took place between May 27 to May 29 2022.

  • With this victory, Sergio Pérez becomes the first Mexican to win the Monaco Grand Prix, and the first North American to win it since Gilles Villeneuve in 1981.

Podium Positions:
i.The Second position was occupied by the Ferrari racing driver Carlos Sainz Jr. (Spanish) with 18 points.
ii.The Third position was taken by the Belgian-Dutch racing driver Max Emilian Verstappen who drove for Red Bull racing.
iii.Pole Position – The Monacan race driver Charles Leclerc who drove for Ferrari finished the race fourth.
iv.The victory was Sergio Perez’s first win of the season, ending the domination of Verstappen and Leclerc, and the third of his career, making him the most successful Mexican F1 driver surpassing Pedro Rodriguez.

Bujar Nishani , a former Albanian President Bujar Nishani had died at 55 due to the health problem .President Bujar Nishani born on 29 September 1966 at Durrës, Albania, was well known for his centre-right political affiliation from the leftist coalition.

i.Nishani served as president from 2012 until 2017. 
ii. At 45, he was elected as the youngest and sixth president in post-communist Albania, supported only by lawmakers from the centre-right Democratic party of then-Prime Minister Sali Berisha.

World Vape Day is annually observed across the globe on 30th May to create awareness about the alternatives to harmful tobacco products and highlights the relative safety of e-cigarettes and their potential as harm reduction and smoking cessation tools.
World Vape Day (May 30) is observed on the day before World No Tobacco Day(May 31), observed by the World Health Organisation(WHO).
Background:
World Vape Day was initiated by the World Vapers’ Alliance(WVA). 
WVA was established by and receives funding from the Consumer Choice Center.
E-Cigarette:
i.Chinese pharmacist Hon Lik invented electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) in 2003 as an alternative to conventional smoking. 
ii.There are several types of e-cigarettes which are the most common form of Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems (ENDS) and Electronic Non-Nicotine Delivery Systems (ENNDS).
iii.Vapes, vaporizers, vape pens, hookah pens, electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes or e-cigs), e-cigars, and e-pipes are some of the many tobacco product terms used to ENDS. 
iv.The system uses a liquid to create aerosols which are inhaled by the users. This liquid may contain additives, flavours and chemicals that can be toxic to health. 
v.E-Cigarettes are estimated to be 95% safer than smoking cigarettes

Tobacco Harm Reduction (THR):
Tobacco Harm Reduction(THR) does not focus on the eradication of products or behaviours but highlights the use of safer nicotine products and offers new choices to the people who want to switch away from smoking. 
Harm Reduction is based on the principle of trying to reduce the risk of using certain products or engaging in certain behaviours or activities. 

International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers 2022 – May 29 International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers - May 29 2022

The United Nations(UN)’s International Day of UN Peacekeepers is annually observed across the globe on 29th May to pay tribute to the uniformed and civilian personnel who contributed to the work of the UN. 
The day also aims to honour around 4200 peacekeepers who lost their lives in the line of duty under the UN since 1948. This includes 135 peacekeepers who lost their lives in 2021. 
The theme of International Day of UN Peacekeepers 2022 is “People. Peace. Progress. The Power of Partnerships”.
Background:
i.The United Nations General Assembly(UNGA) adopted the resolution A/RES/57/129 in December 2002 and proclaimed the 29th May of every year as the “International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers”. 
ii.The first-ever International Day of UN Peacekeepers day was observed on 29th May 2003. 
Note: The first UN Peacekeeping mission was established on 29th May 1948.

Key Facts
i.Swami Vivekananda Yoga Anusandhana Samsthana (S-VYASA) collaborated to develop the App with RESET TECH, an AI-driven integrated health-tech platform that aims to deal with chronic diseases and lifestyle conditions through yoga and meditation.
ii.The App would provide users with personalised wellness solutions and offer doctor consultations based on an individual’s personal history and monitor its progress enabling them to accelerate healing and recovery.
iii. The app would provide users with customised wellness solutions and doctor consultations based on their specific histories, as well as track their progress, allowing them to heal and recover faster.
iv.The App is accessible in various languages, aims to reach and impact over five million chronic disease patients within the next five years.
v.The App addresses the root-cause of the diseases going beyond temporary care and helps restore lost health.

  • Also, aims to cure diseases borne out of lifestyle disorders that have plagued people over the past decades.
