PM Modi Inaugurates ITU World Telecommunication Standardization Assembly 2024 in New DelhiOn 15th October 2024, Narendra Modi, Prime Minister(PM) of India, inaugurated the International Telecommunication Union (ITU)– World Telecommunication Standardization Assembly (WTSA) 2024 at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi, Delhi.
- PM Modi also inaugurated the 8th edition of India Mobile Congress(IMC 2024), Asia’s largest digital technology forum during the programme.
- ITU-WTSA 2024 was held from 15th to 24th October 2024 hosted by India in New Delhi, Delhi.
- WTSA was hosted in India for the first time in ITU’s history of 150 years. This also marks the first WTSA hosted in the Asia-Pacific.

Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya Launches eShram – One Stop Solution for Unorganised WorkersUnion Minister Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, Ministry of Labour & Employment (MoL&E), launched the ‘eShram – One Stop Solution‘ from New Delhi, Delhi to enhance easier access to various social security schemes for unorganized workers.
- The launch was also attended by Union Minister of State (MoS) Sushri Shobha Karandlaje, MoL&E, among others.
- eShram – One Stop Solution will act as a facilitator, ensuring that unorganised workers can easily access various Government schemes.
Key Points:
i.The eShram portal, originally launched in August 2021 by MoL&E for creation of National Database of Unorganized Workers (NDUW).
- It has already registered over 30 crore workers, showcasing its vital role in providing welfare services.
- Unorganized workers aged between 16-59 years can register on this portal.
ii.There is a significant increase in user engagement, with approximately 60,000 to 90,000 new registrations daily, reflecting growing trust in the platform.
iii.The platform integrates key welfare initiatives such as:
- ONORC: One Nation One Ration Card
- MGNREGA: Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act
- NSAP: National Social Assistance Programme
- NCS: National Career Service
- PM-SYM: Pradhan Mantri Shram Yogi Maandhan
iv.The initiative aligns with the government’s broader strategy to improve the livelihoods of unorganized workers and ensure their well-being through targeted welfare schemes.
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman approves Creation of CGM Posts in 5 Nationalized BanksUnion Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, Ministry of Finance(MoF) has approved the restructuring within nationalized banks by creating and increasing the number of Chief General Manager (CGM) posts.
- This decision is aimed at enhancing the administrative framework and operational efficiency of these banks.
- The restructuring is based on a review of the banks’ business mixes as of March 31, 2023. The new structure aims for a ratio of one CGM for every four GMs, ensuring a balanced distribution of responsibilities.
Creation of New CGM Posts:
i.The Finance Minister has sanctioned the establishment of 64 new CGM posts, increasing the total from 80 to 144 across all 11 nationalized banks.
ii.As a result, the total number of GM positions has been adjusted from 440 to 576, the DGM (Deputy General Manager) positions from 1,320 to 1,728, and the AGM (Assistant GM) positions from 3,960 to 5,184.
iii.The CGM role functions as an essential link between the GM and Executive Director (ED) positions.
iv.The introduction of more CGMs is expected to improve monitoring in critical areas such as: Digitalization, Cybersecurity, Financial technology (fintech), Risk management, Compliance, Rural banking, Financial inclusion, among others.
Targeted Banks:
Prior to this, CGM posts were available in six out of eleven nationalized banks. The new CGM positions will be introduced in five nationalized banks, namely:
- Bank of Maharashtra (BoM), Pune, Maharashtra
- Central Bank of India (CBI), Mumbai, Maharashtra
- Indian Overseas Bank (IOB), Chennai, Tamil Nadu
- Punjab & Sind Bank (PSB), New Delhi, Delhi
- UCO Bank, Kolkata, West Bengal

Nitin Gadkari Unveils Rs 100 Commemorative Coin to mark the Birth Centenary of HH Mataji Nirmala Devi Ji Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, Ministry of Road Transport & Highways (MoRTH) unveiled a Rs 100 commemorative coin to mark the Birth Centenary of HH Mataji Nirmala Devi Ji at the National Museum in New Delhi, Delhi.
- HH Mataji Nirmala Devi Ji was born on March 21,1923 and her Birth Centenary was celebrated in 2023.
- She was the founder of Sahaja Yoga, a new religious movement.
i.The Rs 100 coin features an image of HH Mataji Nirmala Devi Ji, symbolizing her teachings and the principle, including inner peace and universal love.
ii.The metal composition of the coin will consist of a Quaternary Alloy, comprising 50% Silver, 40% Copper, 5% Nickel, and 5% Zinc. The coin will weigh 35 grams and have a diameter of 44 millimeter(mm), featuring 200 serrations along the edge.
MSDE partners with Meta for AI Assistant in Skill India Mission and 5 Centers of Excellence in NSTIs
The Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE) has partnered with Meta, parent company of the social network Facebook, to enhance the Skill India Mission through the development of an Artificial Intelligence(AI) Assistant and the establishment of five Centers of Excellence (CoEs) focused on Virtual Reality (VR) and Mixed Reality (MR).
- Five CoEs will be established at National Skill Training Institutes (NSTIs) located in: Hyderabad(Telangana), Bengaluru(Karnataka), Jodhpur(Rajasthan), Chennai(Tamil Nadu,TN), Kanpur(Uttar Pradesh, UP).
Key Points:
i.This collaboration aims to leverage advanced technology to improve skill development training and accessibility for learners across India.
ii.The partnership will create an AI-powered chatbot utilizing Meta’s open-source Llama model.
- This chatbot will be integrated into the Skill India Digital (SID) Portal, providing 24/7 support for users, including quick access to course information, and educational resources.
iii.These centers will equip instructors and learners with cutting-edge VR technology.

75th IAC held in Milan, Italy ; ISRO’s Dr. S. Somanath received IAF World Space AwardThe 75th International Astronautical Congress (IAC 2024) was held from October 14 to 18, 2024 at the Milano Congress Center (Allianz MiCo), Europe’s largest conference venue in Milan, Italy. It was organized by the International Astronautical Federation (IAF) and co-hosted by the Italian Association of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIDAA) and the Italian Space Agency (ASI) and Leonardo.
- The theme of IAC 2024 is “Responsible Space for Sustainability“, highlighted the urgent need for responsible use to ensure safety, minimize overcrowding, and reduce light pollution as the space economy expands.
- The significant highlights of the congress included the the awarding of the IAF World Space Award 2024 to ISRO Chairman Dr. S. Somanath, launch of ESA’s Moonlight Programme for lunar communication, and the unveiling of the AxEMU spacesuit by Axiom Space and Prada.

IOB launches ‘IOB-Mahila Shaksham scheme’ to Empower Women EntrepreneursIndian Overseas Bank (IOB) has launched the ‘IOB -Mahila Shaksham Scheme’ aimed at empowering individual women Self Help Group (SHG) members for entrepreneurial activity.
- This initiative is under the Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana-National Rural Livelihoods Mission (DAY-NRLM) offering financial assistance to individual members of Women SHGs.
- The scheme also aligns with the Ministry of Rural Development’s (MoRD) ‘Lakhpati Didi Yojana’ to promote financial independence for women.
- It is also a part of the bank’s commitment to support women’s economic participation and enhance their access to financial resources.
About IOB – Mahila Shaksham Scheme:
Objective:
To empower women by providing them with financial assistance and support to start or expand their businesses.
Features:
i.The scheme is designed specifically for women entrepreneurs, including those running Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs).
ii.Women can avail loans minimum at Rs 75,000 and upto Rs 10,00,000
iii.It will foster entrepreneurship by ensuring a sustainable income of a minimum of Rs 1 lakh per household.
iv.The repayment tenure is 60 Monthly/20 quarterly instalments including moratorium period (maximum 12 months).

RBI Revised Access Criteria to its NDS-OM Electronic Trading PlatformThe Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has expanded direct access to its Negotiated Dealing System-Order Matching (NDS-OM) electronic trading platform to a wider range of Regulated Entities (REs) such as Regional Rural Banks (RRBs), Local Area Banks (LABs), Non-Banking Finance Companies (NBFCs), including Housing Finance Companies(HFCs), among others.
- The new guidelines have enabled the entities to either gain direct access, permitting them to execute transactions on the NDS-OM platform, or opt for indirect access in partnership with an entity that holds direct access.
- RBI has issued these directions in exercise of the powers given under section 45W of the RBI Act, 1934 read with section 45U of the RBI Act, 1934.
- The revised directions now called the RBI (Access Criteria for NDS-OM) Directions, 2024 and these directions came into effect from 18th October, 2024.

Bank of Baroda Introduces bob Utsav Deposit Scheme
Vadodara(Gujarat) based Bank of Baroda (BoB) announced the launch of the ‘bob Utsav Deposit Scheme’, a 400-day period term deposit scheme. The scheme offers interest rates of 7.30% per annum (p.a.) for the general public, 7.80% p.a. for senior citizens, 7.90% p.a. for super senior citizens (aged 80 years & above) and up to 7.95% p.a. on Non-Callable Deposits.
- The scheme opens on 14th October 2024 and is applicable on fixed deposits below Rs 3 crore. bob Utsav is a limited-period offer.
- BoB has also increased interest rates in the above 3 year to 5 year bucket by 30 basis points (bps) from 6.50% p.a. to 6.80% p.a.
- The interest rates on bob Earth Green Term Deposits have also been increased by 30 bps to 7.15% p.a in select tenors.

General Luong Cuong elected as the New President of VietnamOn 21st October 2024, Vietnam’s National Assembly elected General Luong Cuong(67-year-old) as the 14th president of Vietnam, during a session held in Hanoi, Vietnam.
- He replaced To Lam, who served as the 13th President of Vietnam from May 2024 to October 2024. To Lam was appointed as the general secretary of the ruling Communist Party in August 2024.

i.Luong Cuong joined the army in 1975 and rose through the ranks, becoming a Major General by 2006. He also served as the Chief of the General Department of Politics under the Vietnam People’s Army.

CCI Approved Proposed Acquisition of 24.9% Shareholding in FGIICL and 25.18% in FGILICL by Central Bank of IndiaThe Competition Commission of India (CCI) has approved the proposed acquisition of 24.9% shareholding in Future Generali India Insurance Company Limited (FGIICL), a general insurance company and 25.18% shareholding in Future Generali India Life Insurance Company Limited (FGILICL) by Central Bank of India, a scheduled commercial bank.
- The CCI has approved the proposal of Bharti Airtel Limited (Bharti Airtel) to increase its stake in Indus Towers Limited (Indus Towers), passive telecom infrastructure provider, to 50.005% (from previous shareholding of 48.95%) pursuant to buy back of shares by Indus Towers.
- The CCI has approved the proposal of Aquilo House Pte. Limited (AHPL) to acquire Aavas Financiers Limited (AFL) (Target), registered with the National Housing Bank (NHB) as a non-deposit taking housing finance company.

Global Iodine Deficiency Disorders Prevention Day 2024 – October 21World Iodine Deficiency Day, also known as Global Iodine Deficiency Disorders Prevention Day, is annually observed across the globe on 21st October to raise awareness about the crucial role of iodine in human health and the serious consequences of iodine deficiency.
Theme: The theme of World Iodine Deficiency Day 2024 was ‘A daily dose of iodine keeps you fit and fine’.
Key Points:
i.Iodine is an essential micronutrient necessary for the production of thyroid hormones, thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3), which regulate metabolism and are vital for fetal and infant development.
ii.Insufficient iodine intake can lead to a range of health issues collectively known as Iodine Deficiency Disorders (IDD). Iodine deficiency can result in severe health problems, including:
- Goitre: An enlarged thyroid gland.
- Hypothyroidism: A condition that can cause fatigue, weight gain, and other symptoms.
- Cognitive Impairments: It is the leading preventable cause of intellectual disabilities worldwide.
- Developmental Delays: Particularly harmful during pregnancy and early childhood, leading to stunted growth and learning difficulties.
iii.Approximately 30% of the world’s population lives in areas at risk for iodine deficiency. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that nearly 1.88 billion people are affected by inadequate iodine intake.
iv.India has implemented programs such as the National Iodine Deficiency Disorders Control Programme (NIDDCP), which aims to eliminate iodine deficiency through strategies like universal salt iodization.
- Under this, the production of iodized salt has reached 65 lakh metric tonnes (MT) annually, which is sufficient to meet the dietary needs of the Indian population.
- According to Regulation 2.3.12 of the Food Safety and Standards (Prohibition and Restriction on Sales) Regulation, 2011, the sale of common salt for direct human consumption is not permitted unless it is iodized.
