MoES Launches 14 Scientific Tools on 19th Foundation Day to Boost India’s Climate ResilienceOn July 28, 2025, the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES), celebrated its 19th Foundation Day in New Delhi, Delhi. During the event, Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh,MoES, unveiled 14 scientific products and digital services developed by the MoES, aimed at enhancing India’s climate resilience and public safety.

  • Among the key initiatives unveiled were the Bharat Forecast System – Extended Range Prediction (BharatFS-ERP), wave atlases, seismic microzonation maps, marine weather forecasting tools, oceanographic data services, and a range of scientific datasets.
  • He also released the India Meteorological Department’s (IMD) documentary titled ‘Life Saving Impact’, highlighting how timely weather alerts and forecasts help protect lives.

Infrastructure Expansion Over the Decade:
Doppler Weather Radars(DWRs): The number of DWRs increased from 15 (in 2014) to 41 (in 2025), enhancing real-time weather monitoring.
Infrastructure: Seismic stations, weather observatories, lightning detection networks, and rain gauges have all more than doubled in number.
Faster Earthquake Alerts: Now issued within 2–3 minutes of tremors, and are instantly accessed by millions of users online.
Cyclone Forecasting: Cyclone warning lead time extended to 10 days, drastically reducing casualties.

MoRTH Approves India’s 1st AI-Based Road Safety Pilot Project in UP to Reduce AccidentsIn July 2025, the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways (MoRTH) granted a No Objection Certificate (NoC) for an Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Big Data Analytics-based Road Safety Pilot Project proposed by the Uttar Pradesh (UP) Transport Department.

  • This marks India’s first state government-led AI intervention in road safety, aimed at improving enforcement efficiency and reducing road accidents.

About India’s 1st AI-Based Road Safety Pilot Project :
Pilot Project: In UP, a pilot project has been proposed to implement an AI-based Intelligent Traffic Management System (AI‑ITMS) in Lucknow, focusing on high-traffic zones such as Hazratganj–Parivartan Chowk, Shaheed Path, and other major routes to enhance road safety and reduce congestion.
Objective: The project intends to establish a data-driven administrative model that will:

  • Reduce road accidents
  • Improve real-time decision-making
  • Strengthen enforcement across transport-related operations

Implementing Agencies: The six-week pilot phase will be undertaken by ITI Limited, a public sector enterprise in collaboration with mLogica, a global technology firm.
Budget Allocation: The Government of UP has allocated Rs 10 crore in its 2025–26 budget to support the establishment of the data-driven transport model.

  • The project will incur no financial liability for the MoRTH.

Data Integration: The pilot project will leverage multi-source data including accident records, weather feeds, vehicle telematics, driver profiles, and roadway infrastructure attributes.
AI Capabilities: The AI model will be designed to

  • Identify root causes of road accidents
  • Predict accident-prone black spots
  • Generate real-time dashboards for transport policy makers

Compliance with Legal Framework: All project components must adhere to:

  • Motor Vehicles Act, 1988
  • Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989
  • Road Safety Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)

Outcome report: After the six-week prototype phase, ITI Limited and mLogica will submit a comprehensive outcome report to MoRTH for final evaluation.
Future Plans: After the pilot phase, the AI system will be implemented in stages across core functions of the UP-Transport Department, including:

  • Faceless licensing and permit systems
  • Modernised enforcement mechanisms
  • Revenue collection and e-challan processing
  • Integration with the ‘Vahan Sarathi’ vehicle registry platform

DPIIT and Ather Energy Signed a MoU to Strengthen EV Manufacturing and Clean Mobility Ecosystem
In July 2025, the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry (MoC&I) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Ather Energy Limited, an Indian Electric Vehicle (EV) manufacturing company, to boost the growth of India’s clean mobility and advanced manufacturing sectors.

  • This strategic collaboration between DPIIT and Ather Energy Limited is being undertaken as part of the ‘Build in Bharat’ initiative led by the Startup Policy Forum (SPF), a coalition of more than 50 innovation-focused startups.

Key Details of MoU:
Signatories: The MoU was exchanged in the presence of Sanjiv Singh, Joint Secretary of DPIIT; and Tarun Mehta, Co-founder and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Ather Energy Limited.
Focus Areas: Under this MoU, both entities will focus on ‘strategic mentorship’ for deep-tech startups, infrastructure support for startups in the EV value chain;

  • The collaboration will launch co-branded programs such as the Bharat Startup Grand Challenge, and organize skill development and talent-building activities.
  • The collaboration includes active participation in flagship startup events like Startup Mahakumbh to promote innovation and boost the clean mobility ecosystem.

Significance: This strategic partnership is expected to generate new opportunities for startups in EV and manufacturing sectors, contributing to a future-ready and startup ecosystem that align with India’s climate and industrial goals.

MoD Signed MoU with TIDCO to Set Up Testing Facility in Tiruchirappali, in TN
In July 2025, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation Limited (TIDCO) to set up a state-of-the-art testing facility in mechanical and material domain under the Defence Testing Infrastructure Scheme (DTIS), at TIDCO in Tiruchirappali, Tamil Nadu (TN).

  • The MoU was formally exchanged between MoD and TIDCO, in the presence of Sanjeev Kumar, Secretary of Defence Production, MoD in New Delhi, Delhi.

About New Facility:
Funding: Under the DTIS, the Government of India (GoI) will provide up to 75% government funding as grant-in-aid, while the remaining 25% will be funded by the Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) comprising Indian private firms and government bodies.
SPV Members: The SPV led by Micro Labs Limited along with TIDCO, Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML), Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) and Vaidheswaran Industries (Opc) Private Limited.
Significance: Once the project gets operationalized, it will provide advanced testing equipment and services to both government and private industry, which will further give boost to ‘Aatmanirbharta (Self-Reliance)’ in defence sector.
Expansion: So far, the MoD has approved the establishment of 7 testing facilities under DTIS, 4 in TN and 3 in Uttar Pradesh(UP).
Note: In May 2020, the MoD launched DTIS with total budget outlay of Rs 400 crore.

UN’s SOFI 2025 Report: Around 8.2% World’s Population Affected by Hunger in 2024In July 2025, United Nations (UN) released its latest report titled ‘The State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World (SOFI 2025): Addressing high food price inflation for food security and nutrition’ during the 2nd UN Food Systems Summit Stocktake (UNFSS+4) in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. As per the report, around 8.2% of world’s population (673 million individuals) was affected by hunger in 2024, compared to 8.5% (in 2023) and 8.7% (in 2022).

  • However, the report noted that this progress was not consistent worldwide, as hunger continued to increase in most subregions of Africa and western Asia.

Prepared by: It is an annual report prepared by 5 specialized agencies of UN: Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF), World Food Programme (WFP) and World Health Organisation (WHO).
Prevalence of Undernourishment (PoU): Asia region saw decrease in PoU from 7.9% (in 2022) to 6.7% or 32 million people (in 2024).
Child Wasting in India: The report also revealed that 18.7% or, over 21 million of Indian children under the age of 5 suffered from wasting in 2024, the highest rate in the world.

LIC Signed USD 1 Billion FRAs with JPMorgan & BoA to Hedge Against Interest Rate Risks
In July 2025, Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC), the largest insurer in India, signed Forward Rate Agreements (FRAs) worth USD 1 billion (approximately Rs. 8,300 crore) with two major United States of America (USA)-based global financial institutions, JPMorgan Chase & Co. and Bank of America Corporation (BoA), to hedge against declining interest rates and stabilize long-term returns amid equity market volatility.
LIC in FRAs:
Background: In November 2024, the LIC announced its plan to enter the bond derivatives market.
Transaction Share: Since May 2025, LIC has executed FRA trades worth USD 1 billion, accounting for 38% of India’s total FRA volume of USD 2.6 billion.
About FRA:
Definition: FRA is a financial contract where one party (LIC) agrees to buy a bond at a fixed interest rate at a future date.
Role of Counterparty: The other party, usually a bank, takes on the interest rate risk in the contract and receives a premium as compensation.
Strategy: To reduce risk, banks often buy long-term bonds that match the maturity period of the FRA.

RBI’s Digital Payments Index Increases by 10.7%, to 493.22 in March 2025
In July 2025, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) published its ‘Digital Payments Index i.e. RBI-DPI’, which has increased to 493.22 in March 2025, marking an increase of 10.7% from 445.50 recorded (in March 2024) and steady increase from 465.33 (in September 2024).

  • As per RBI,  this increase has been mainly attributed by robust improvements in Payment Infrastructure-Supply-Side factors and Payment Performance components of the index.

About RBI-DPI:
Launched: RBI-DPI, a composite measure designed to capture the growth and reach of digital payments in the country, was launched in 2021.
Semi-annual: The index is published semi-annually (i.e. in the month of March and September for each year) by the RBI.
Base Period: RBI constituted the index with March 2018 as the base period, which was assigned a score of 100.
Key Components: The index comprises 5 key components that are used to monitor the penetration and strengthening of digital payment systems in India:

  • Payment Enablers (25%), Payment Infrastructure-Demand side factors (10%), Payment Infrastructure-Supply-side factors (15%), Payment Performance (45%) and Consumer Centricity (5%).

Growth in Digital Transactions: Digital transactions in India have surged significantly over the past six financial years (Financial Year 2019-20,FY20 to FY25), recording over 65,000 crore transactions worth  Rs.12,000 lakh crore (Rs.120 trillion).

Indian Hindi Novelist Geetanjali Shree Wins PEN Translates Award 2025 for ‘Once Elephants Lived Here’In July 2025, Indian Hindi novelist and short story writer Geetanjali Shree was named one of the 14 winners of the PEN Translates Award 2025 by English PEN, a United Kingdom (UK)-based literary and human rights organisation, for her short story collection ‘Once Elephants Lived Here’, translated into English by American Hindi and Urdu translator Daisy Rockwell.

  • The book explores themes such as remembrance, uprooting, and the erosion of both cultural and ecological legacies.

About Geetanjali Shree:
About: Geetanjali Shree is a prominent Hindi novelist and short story writer from Mainpuri, Uttar Pradesh(UP).
Literary Beginnings: Her literary journey began with the short story “Bel Patra” in 1987, followed by her first short story collection, Anugoonj (1991).
Notable Works: She has authored five novels and several short story collections, with notable works including Mai, Hamara Shahar Us Baras, Khālī Jagah, Ret Samadhi, and Tomb of Sand .
Recognition: In 2022, her novel ‘Ret Samadhi’, translated into English as ‘Tomb of Sand’ by Daisy Rockwell, won the International Booker Prize, becoming the first Hindi-language novel to receive this honor.

CCI Approvals on 28 July 2025On 28 July 2025, the Competition Commission of India (CCI), under Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA), has approved the following two proposals:
Approved Renault’s Acquisition of RNAIPL from Nissan:
Acquirers: The CCI has approved the acquisition of the remaining 51% stake held by Nissan in Renault Nissan Automotive India Private Limited (RNAIPL)(Target) by Renault Group B.V. (Acquirer 1) and its nominee, Renault S.A.S. (Acquirer 2).
Details of the Proposed Combination: The proposed combination involves the acquisition of equity shares and fully paid-up zero-coupon non-convertible redeemable preference shares held by Nissan Motor Company Ltd., Japan and Nissan Overseas Investments B.V. (together “Sellers”) in RNAIPL by the acquirers.
CCI Approves Road Asset Acquisition by Anantam Highways Trust:
Parties Involved: The CCI approved the proposed combination involving the acquisition of road infrastructure assets by Anantam Highways Trust (Infrastructure Investment Trust, InvIT), Mumbai (Maharashtra)-based Alpha Alternatives Fund Advisors LLP, and others (Sponsor and Sponsor Group), along with Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh, MP)-based Dilip Buildcon Limited (DBL) and DBL Infraventures Private Limited (DIPL).
Scope of the Acquisition: The proposed combination includes acquisition of:

  • 100% shareholding in 8 target Special Purpose Vehicles (SPVs) including Dodaballapur Hoskote Highways Limited, Repallewada Highways Limited, Dhrol Bhadra Highways Limited, Narendrapur‑Purnea Highways Limited, Villuppuram Highways Limited, Bangalore Malur Highways Limited, Malur Bangarpet Highways Limited and DPJ Pollachi HAM Project Private Limited.
  • 49% stake in PHL Infrastructure Private Limited (a road asset entity).

DRDO Conducts Successful Flight Tests of Pralay MissileOn July 28 and 29, 2025, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) conducted two consecutive flight tests of the indigenous ‘Pralay’ quasi-ballistic missile during User Evaluation Trials with the Indian Armed Forces from Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Island, off the coast of Odisha
About Pralay Missile:
Missile Specifications:

  • Type: Pralay is a short-range, solid-propellant, quasi-ballistic surface-to-surface missile.
  • Range Capability: 150 to 500 kilometres (km)
  • Warhead: Carries conventional warheads weighing 350 to 700 kilograms (kg)
  • Payload Capacity: Between 500 to 1,000 kg
  • Launch Platform: Mounted on high-mobility vehicles with a twin-launcher configuration, allowing rapid deployment along active borders

Development: Led by Research Centre Imarat (RCI) in collaboration with:

  • DRDO labs: DRDO, Advanced Systems Laboratory (ASL), Defence Metallurgical Research Laboratory (DMRL), and others.
  • Industry partners: Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL), Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), and MSMEs.
  • 100% indigenous development aligns with Atmanirbhar Bharat in defense.

Test Purpose: The tests were part of User Evaluation Trials to validate the missile system’s minimum and maximum range capabilities

  • Both missiles followed the intended quasi-ballistic trajectory with pinpoint accuracy, hitting their designated targets in the Bay of Bengal and meeting all mission objectives.

Technical Validation:

  • Tracking Systems: The tests were monitored using tracking instruments and sensors installed by the Integrated Test Range (ITR), including those mounted on ships near the impact point.
  • System Performance: All onboard subsystems performed as expected and met all mission objectives with pinpoint accuracy.

Astronomers Observed Birth of New Solar System for the 1st Time around a Baby Star, HOPS-315
In July 2025, International astronomers have, for the 1st time, observed the formation of a new solar system around a baby star named ‘HOPS-315’, which sits 1,300 light-years away from the earth (nearly 7.6 quadrillion miles, away in the constellation Orion).

  • This observation marks the 1st time a planetary system has been identified at such an early stage in its formation.

About HOPS-315:
Observation Tools Used: The formation process around HOPS-315 was observed using two advanced telescopes.

  • The Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA), located in the Atacama Desert, Chile. ALMA is operated by the European Southern Observatory (ESO) in partnership with global collaborators.
  • The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), a joint project of the United  States of America(USA), European and Canadian space agencies.

Key Observations: Researchers used infrared sensitivity of JWST to  identify chemical footprints of hot, crystalline minerals, notably Silicon Monoxide (SiO), beginning to solidify within this disc.

  • While, ALMA helped the researchers to find out where the minerals were beginning to solidify.

Divya Deshmukh Became 1st Indian to Win FIDE Women’s World Cup 2025, Runner-up KoneruOn July 28, 2025, Divya Deshmukh from Nagpur, Maharashtra, India, won the 2025 FIDE (Fédération Internationale des Échecs) Women’s World Cup, by defeating India’s Koneru Humpy in the finals held in Batumi, Georgia.

  • Divya becomes the First Indian woman to win this tournament, and joins Alexandra Kosteniuk (2021) and Aleksandra Goryachkina (2023) as the third Women’s World Cup champion
  • India performed remarkably, with four Indian players reaching the quarterfinals.

Event Specific:
Participation: The 2025 FIDE Women’s World Cup witnessed participation from 107 players representing 46 countries, including 17 of the top 20 ranked women chess players.
Victory: The classical format games between Divya Deshmukh and Koneru Humpy ended in draws. The final was decided in two 15+10 rapid tiebreak games, where Divya won with a score of 1.5–0.5. She received a prize of USD 50,000.
About Divya Deshmukh:
Achievement: With this win, Divya becomes India’s 4th woman and 88th overall to earn the Grandmaster (GM) title, becoming one of the few players globally to earn the GM title directly by winning a major FIDE event, without securing the usual three GM norms and 2500 rating.

  • The Runner-up Humpy received a prize of USD 35,000.
  • GM Tan Zhongyi (China) defeated GM Lei Tingjie (China) to secure the third position and USD 25,000 prize.

  • This declaration officially recognized July 29 as Global Tiger Day.
  • Tx2 Initiative: The 13 TRCs also pledged to achieve the Tx2 goal, aiming to double the wild tiger population by 2022.
  • The 13 TRCs are Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, China, India, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Nepal, Russia, Thailand, and Vietnam.

First Observance: The first Global Tiger Day was observed on July 29, 2011.
