PMJDY Completes 11 Years with 56.16 Crore Accounts, Rs.2.67 Lakh Crore DepositsOn August 28, 2025, the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY), launched by the Prime Minister(PM) Narendra Modi in August 2014, marks 11 years of transformative impact in India’s financial landscape.
About Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY):
Empowerment: The world’s largest financial inclusion scheme, PMJDY is a National Mission for Financial Inclusion that seeks to provide every unbanked adult in India with a bank account, a financial identity, and access to essential services like credit, insurance, and pensions.
Ministry: The Nodal Ministry for the PMJDY is Department of Financial Services(DFS), Ministry of Finance(MoF).
Slogan: The slogan of PMJDY is ‘Mera Khata – Bhagya Vidhata’.
Key Milestone(As on 13th Augus 2025):
World Record: The scheme set a Guinness World Record by opening nearly 1.8 crore bank accounts in a single week during its launch phase.
Accounts: PMJDY accounts have grown from 14.72 crores (cr) in 2015 to over 56.16 cr by August 2025, with around 67% in rural/semi-urban areas and 33% were opened in urban/metro areas.

  • 56% PMJDY accounts belong to women, highlighting the scheme’s role in promoting gender equality in financial access.

Deposits : Total deposit balances under PMJDY accounts have reached Rs. 2,67,756 cr. As on 13th August 2025, the average deposit per account is Rs. 4,768.
RuPay Cards: A total of 38.68 cr RuPay debit cards have been issued to PMJDY account holders, facilitating cashless transactions and providing access to the inbuilt accident insurance cover.

MoSPI Released Result of Annual Survey of Industries 2023-24 data: TN tops in number of factoriesIn August 2025, the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) published the results of the ‘Annual Survey of Industries (ASI) for the period April 2023 to March 2024 (Financial Year 2023-24, FY24)’, referred to as ASI 2023-24.

  • The field work for this survey was carried out during October 2024 to June 2025 for ASI 2023-24.
  • Tamil Nadu (TN) was the top State in terms of the number of factories and persons employed in the manufacturing sector, according to the results of the ASI 2023-24.

Key Highlights of ASI 2023-24:
Key Parameters:
Capital: The Fixed capital rose to Rs. 46,24,09,035 crore (cr) in FY24 from Rs. 41,21,79,458 cr in FY23 and invested capital to Rs. 68,01,32,999 cr from Rs. 61,39,21,255 cr in FY23.
Employment: The total employment grew from 1,84,94,962 in FY23 to 1,95,89,131 in FY24.

  • The sector added more than 57 lakh jobs during the last decade 2014-15 to 2023-24.

Gross Value Added (GVA): The GVA grew by 11.89% in current prices in the FY24 over the previous year.
Other Parameters: The inputs rose by 4.7%, while output increased by 5.80% in FY24.
Industries: Top 5 industries in respect of GVA are Basic metal, Motor vehicles, Chemical and Chemical products, Food Products and Pharmaceutical products.
Top States:
GVA: The top 3 states by GVA in FY24 were Maharashtra at 1st, followed by Gujarat and TN at 2nd and 3rd place respectively.
Factories: Out of 2,60,061 factories across India, Tamil Nadu topped the list, being home to 15.43% of them, followed by Gujarat, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh (UP), and Andhra Pradesh (AP).
Workforce: In terms of employment, TN tops in this category, then Gujarat at 2nd and Maharashtra at 3rd.
Fixed Capital (FC): Gujarat tops under the fixed capital category, followed by Maharashtra and TN.
Output: The top states by output were Gujarat, followed by Maharashtra and TN.

DAHD Issues Revised ‘National Action Plan on Glanders’ to Control and Eradicate DiseasesOn August 27, 2025, the Department of Animal Husbandry & Dairying (DAHD), Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying (MoFAH&D) has issued the ‘Revised National Action Plan on Glanders(a contagious and often fatal disease of equines)’, with an aim to strengthen surveillance, prevention, control and eradication of the disease.

  • The move aims to ensure compassionate treatment of working equines such as horses, mules, and donkeys.

About Revised Action Plan:
Zone: With the aim to make containment measures more targeted, the infected zone has been reduced from 5 kilometre (km) to 2 km, and the surveillance area has been reduced to 2-10 km from 5-25 km.
Surveillance: The guidelines have mandated the testing of equines in endemic regions and in high-risk areas, deployment of advanced laboratory diagnostics, and frequent field inspections to ensure timely detection and containment.
Quarantine: It has suggested rigorous quarantine measures, restrictions on animal movement from affected areas and the requirement of health certificates indicating tested negative for glanders for participation in gatherings such as fairs, religious yatras, sports events, and interstate transport.
Implementation: The Revised Action Plan will be jointly implemented by state governments, veterinary universities, and ICAR institutes, with technical guidance and oversight from DAHD.

SIA-India Signs MoU with Philippines’s EIAPI for Joint Research and Co-Development
On August 28, 2025, Satcom Industry Association-India (SIA-India), a non-profit organization, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Electronic Industry Association of the Philippines Inc. (EIAPI), with an aim to deepen cooperation in the fields of electronics, space and satellite communication technologies.

India & Bhutan Signed MoU on Technical Cooperation in Agriculture & Allied Sectors
In August 2025, India has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Bhutan, to bolster the technical cooperation in agriculture and allied sectors, including livestock.

  • This MoU marks a major milestone in the enduring partnership between India and Bhutan as it reflects the shared commitment of two countries to food security, sustainable farming, and rural prosperity.

In August 2025, SBI Card and Payment Services Limited, Indian Non-Banking Financial Company (NBFC), in collaboration with Flipkart, e-commerce marketplace, has announced the launch of a co-branded credit card named Flipkart SBI Credit Card’designed with curated cash back benefits to offer a seamless shopping experience to its customers.

Unity Bank and BharatPeLaunches India’s First EMI-Driven RuPay Credit Card
In August 2025, Unity Small Finance Bank Limited(Unity Bank) partnered with BharatPe to launch India’s first Equated Monthly Instalment(EMI)-driven credit card, the ‘Unity Bank BharatPe Credit Card’. The card operates on the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) operated RuPay network.

  • The card aims to provide transparent and inclusive access to credit, enabling salaried and self-employed individuals to manage cash flows responsibly and avoid high-interest revolving debt traps.

Air India Express Becomes Fourth Indian Airline to Join IATA
In August 2025, Air India Express, a wholly owned subsidiary of Air India, has joined the International Air Transport Association (IATA), an airline trade association, making it the fourth Indian carrier to join after Air India, IndiGo, and SpiceJet.

Former RBI Governor Urjit Patel Appointed as India’s New ED at IMFIn August 2025, the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) chaired by Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi has approved the appointment of Renowned Economist Dr. Urjit Patel, former Governor of Reserve Bank of India (RBI), to the post of Executive Director (ED) representing India at International Monetary Fund (IMF)

  • As per the official notification, Patel will remain at this post for a period of 3 years from the date he assumes charge, or until further orders, whichever is earlier.

Railway Board Chairman Satish Kumar Gets One-Year Tenure Extension
In August 2025, the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) approved a one-year extension in the tenure of Satish Kumar, Indian Railway Management Service (IRMS) (Retired), as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Indian Railway Board (IRB), under the Ministry of Railways (MoR), effective from September 1, 2025.

  • He was the first individual from the Scheduled Castes (SC)/Dalit community to hold this position in the history of the IRB.

Pixxel, Dhruva Space Launched Satellites on SpaceX Falcon-9In August 2025, Karnataka’s hyperspectral imaging company, Pixxelspace India Private Limited and Indian private aerospace manufacturing company, Dhruva Space Private Limited have successfully launched satellites onboard SpaceX’s Falcon-9 rocket as part of National Advanced Optical System (NAOS) mission, from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California, the United States of America (USA).

Key Function: These satellites operate in a Sun-synchronous Low Earth Orbit (LEO), at an altitude of 550 kilometer (km), which enables daily revisit capability for any location on Earth.

  • Also, the fireflies operating as a constellation collectively form the most advanced commercial hyperspectral imaging system.

Significance: Each satellite is capable of capturing more than 135 spectral bands at a 5-metre (m) resolution across a 40 km swath, which enables the scientists, governments and businesses to monitor Earth’s ecosystems with extreme accuracy.
About LEAP-01 Mission:
Payloads: It carried two payloads: Akula Tech’s Nexus-01 mission featuring an advanced Artificial Intelligence (AI) module and hyperspectral imager Over The Rainbow-2(OTR-2), developed by Esper Satellite.
Satellite Bus: The mission launched payloads, is based on the P-30 satellite bus developed by Dhruva Space.

  • A satellite bus is an integral part of a satellite that contains all important sub-systems which include power, propulsion, communication, on which the payloads are attached.

Key Function: Akula Tech’s space-ready AI model enables the optimization and compression of any geospatial AI/ Machine Language (ML) models which will offer quicker responses from time-critical tasks.

  • While, hyperspectral imager will improve remote sensing capabilities by capturing high resolution, spectrally rich Earth observation data which can be accessed by Esper’s EarthTone API.

Dharambir, Preeti Pal Named India’s Flag Bearers for World Para Athletics Championships 2025
In August 2025, the Paralympic Committee of India (PCI) announced that Paralympians Dharambir and Preeti Pal were chosen as the flag bearers of the Indian contingent for the 12th World Para Athletics Championships(2025), scheduled to be held from 27 September to 5 October 2025 at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, New Delhi.

  • This will be the first time India is hosting the championship, with a 73-member contingent representing India in the tournament.
