Indian Railways and SBI Sign MoU to Enhance Insurance Coverage
On September 1, 2025, Indian Railways (IR) and the State Bank of India (SBI) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to enhance insurance benefits for railway employees, especially frontline Group C workers and others, maintaining salary accounts with SBI.

• The MoU was signed in the presence of Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, Ministry of Railways (MoR), along with Satish Kumar, Chairman of Railway Board, and C.S. Setty, Chairman of SBI.

Key Benefits under the MoU:
Accidental Death Cover: Insurance benefit raised to Rs. 1 crore for all Railway employees with SBI salary accounts, compared to the earlier Rs. 1.20 lakh (Group A), Rs. 60,000 (Group B), and Rs. 30,000 (Group C) under the Central Government Employees Group Insurance Scheme (CGEGIS).
Natural Death Cover: Salary account holders will be eligible for Rs. 10 lakh coverage without any premium payment or medical examination.
Complimentary Covers:

• Air Accident Insurance: Rs. 1.60 crore, plus up to Rs. 1.00 crore on RuPay Debit Card.
• Personal Accident :
• Permanent Total Disability: Rs. 1.00 crore.

DoP Signs MoU with ESRI India, Enhancing DIGIPIN Initiative
On September 01, 2025, the Department of Posts (DoP), under the Ministry of Communications, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with ESRI India Technologies Private Limited, a leading Geographic Information System (GIS) software and solutions provider, at Dak Bhawan, New Delhi, Delhi.

• The MoU aims DoP to use ESRI India’s high-resolution imagery and street basemaps for its Digital Postal Index Number(DIGIPIN) portal.

MoU for DIGIPIN Enrichment:
Digital Transformation: Combines DoP’s extensive postal network with ESRI’s GIS mapping technology to strengthen India’s digital addressing system.
Technical Support: ESRI India will provide technical expertise for seamless integration with its Living Atlas portal, expanding accessibility to the GIS community.
Citizen-Centric Services: The partnership aims to make DIGIPIN more robust, user-friendly, and efficient for citizens and government services.

BEL Secures Orders Worth Rs.644 Crores to Boost India’s Defence Capabilities
In August 2025, Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), a Navratna Public Sector Undertaking (PSU), Ministry of Defence (MoD), secured defence and technology orders worth Rs.644 crores since its last disclosure on July 30, 2025.

Areas: The orders span multiple areas, including Data Centres, Ship Fire Control Systems, Tank Navigation Systems, Communication equipment, seekers, jammers, simulators, Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs), Upgrades, and Spares and Support services.
Strengthening BEL’s Defence Order : These fresh orders enhance BEL’s already strong order book, which now stands at Rs.74,859 crore as of July 1, 2025. The new contracts sharpen BEL’s reputation as a trusted supplier of high-quality, indigenous, and technologically advanced solutions vital for India’s military and strategic applications.
Alignment: The orders align with Aatmanirbhar Bharat, an initiative by the Government of India (GOI), to strengthen indigenous defence production and reduce dependency on imports.
BEL: Established in 1954, BEL designs, develops, manufactures, and supplies a wide range of defence and civilian electronic products, categorized into Defence and Non-Defence segments.

AISATS Becomes India’s First Ground Handling Company to Secure Safety Clearance from DGCA
On September 2, 2025, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has granted safety clearance to Air India SATS Airport Services Private Limited (AISATS), a Joint Venture (JV) between Air India Limited and SATS Limited for ground handling operations.

• With this move, AISATS has become the first ground handling company in India to receive the approval.

Safety Clearance: It recognizes the compliance of AISATS with the safety management requirements of DGCA for ground handling services at airports. It includes checks on operational processes, equipment, staff training, and adherence to international safety standards.
Pioneer in Asia-Pacific:With this achievement, India is now the second country in the Asia-Pacific region(APAC) (after Malaysia) to implement such an extensive safety framework in compliance with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) guidance.
AISATS: Established in 2008, It provides comprehensive ground handling and cargo services, including passenger check-in, baggage handling, aircraft loading and unloading, ramp services, cargo management, and aircraft cleaning, at major Indian airports.

Overview of PM Modi’s Visit to China from August 31 to September 01, 2025After concluding his visit to Japan, Prime Minister (PM) of India, Narendra Modi undertook a 2-day official visit to China from August 31 to September 01, 2025 as 2nd leg of his two-nation tour, at the invitation of Xi Jinping, President of China.

• PM Narendra Modi arrived in Tianjin, northern port city of China to attend the 25th Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit. This marked his 1st official visit to China since 2018.

Key Highlights of PM Narendra Modi’s Visit to China:
Attended 25th SCO Summit:  He addressed the plenary session of the 25th meeting of the Council of Heads of State (CHS) of the SCO held in Tianjin, highlighting India’s efforts to strengthen cooperation within the SCO framework
Bilateral Meetings: He also held bilateral meetings with Chinese President Xi Jinping, Russian President Vladimir Putin, and several other leaders, on the sidelines of the SCO Summit.
Highlights of 25th SCO Meetings:
SCO-CHS: China, 2025 Chair of the SCO, hosted the 25th meeting of the SCO-CHS was held from August 31 to September 1, 2025 at the Meijiang International Convention and Exhibition Center under the presidency of Chinese President Xi Jinping.

• Theme: ‘Upholding the Shanghai Spirit: SCO on the Move’.

New Dialogue Partner: The CHS of SCO member nations granted the status of SCO dialogue partner to Laos People’s Democratic Republic (PDR).

• Following the inclusion of Laos as dialogue partner, the SCO grouping now comprises 10 members and 17 partners.

Adoption of Tianjin Declaration: During the SCO Summit, CHS of SCO signed and unanimously adopted the Tianjin Declaration, outlines commitment among member states on Artificial Intelligence (AI), among others.

• This newly adopted declaration is based on the United Nations (UN) General Assembly Resolution on AI capacity building and highlighted that all countries have equal rights to develop and use AI.

Next Presidency: At the conclusion of SCO Summit, Kyrgyzstan assumed the SCO’s rotating chairmanship for 2025-26.

• Also, 26th SCO-CHS meeting will be held in Bishkek, the capital city of Kyrgyzstan, under the theme ’25 Years of the SCO: together for a stable world, development, and prosperity’.

India–USA Joint Military Exercise ‘Yudh Abhyas 2025’ Begins in Alaska, USAOn 1 September 2025,the 21st edition of the India–the United States of America(USA) joint military exercise “Yudh Abhyas(YA-2025)” commenced  at Fort Wainwright, Alaska, the USA.

• The exercise is scheduled to run until 14 September 2025.

Background:
Overview: Yudh Abhyas is an annual bilateral military exercise conducted between the armies of India and the USA, which was first initiated in 2004.
Location: The Yudh Abhyas exercise is held alternately between India and the USA.
Scope: The exercise is often conducted under Chapter VII of the United Nations(UN )Charter, focusing on missions such as counter-terrorism, peacekeeping, and humanitarian assistance.
Previous Edition: The last edition of Yudh Abhyas was conducted at the Mahajan Field Firing Ranges in Rajasthan.
About Exercise Yudh Abhyas 2025:
Participants: The Indian contingent comprises personnel from a battalion of the Madras Regiment.

• They will train with soldiers of the 1st Battalion, 5th Infantry Regiment “Bobcats” from the Arctic Wolves Brigade Combat Team, 11th Airborne Division of the USA Army.

Tactical Drills: Troops will rehearse a spectrum of operations including heliborne operations, the use of surveillance assets and Unmanned Aerial System (UAS), rock craft, mountain warfare, casualty evacuation, combat medical aid, and integrated use of artillery, aviation, and Electronic Warfare (EW) systems.
Working Groups: Subject-matter experts from both armies will conduct sessions on UAS and counter-UAS operations, information warfare, communications, and logistics.
Culmination: The exercise will conclude with jointly planned tactical manoeuvres, live-fire exercises, and high-altitude operations, focusing on enhancing preparedness for multi-domain challenges and UN peacekeeping operations.

ADB Approves USD 125 million Loan to Boost Urban Services and Climate Resilience in AssamIn August 2025, the Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved a USD 125 million loan under the Assam Urban Sector Development Project(AUSDP) to transform urban infrastructure and strengthen climate resilience in Assam.

• The project covers six district headquarters : Barpeta, Bongaigaon, Dhubri, Goalpara, Golaghat, Nalbari and Guwahati, the state capital of Assam.

About Assam Urban Sector Development Project (AUSDP):
Key Investments: The major Investments for Modernizing Assam’s Water Supply and Drainage Systems are:

• Six new water treatment plants with a combined capacity of 72 mn liters per day.
• 800 kilometers (kms) of water distribution pipelines across district headquarters in Barpeta, Bongaigaon, Dhubri, Goalpara, Golaghat, and Nalbari.
• A real-time monitoring system to reduce nonrevenue water losses to below 20%, ensuring efficient delivery and sustainable use of resources.

Governance and Digitalization: The project also includes the establishment of the Assam State Institute for Urban Development (ASIUD) in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati (IIT-G).

• It will roll out a Geographic Information System(GIS)-based property tax database, digital water billing systems, and a volumetric water tariff structure across project towns to improve financial sustainability and service delivery.

Empowering Women: The project embeds a strong focus on promoting gender equity and social inclusion, with particular emphasis on supporting women and girls.

Training: The project also includes training women’s Self-Help Groups (SHG) in water operations and offering internships for college-age women.

• Conducting school outreach programs to raise awareness on water, sanitation, and hygiene.

Impact: AUSDP will benefit residents with continuous, metered water supply and improved stormwater management.

• It strengthens urban governance through reforms and capacity building, promotes inclusive, climate-resilient infrastructure, empowers women and disadvantaged groups, and enhances digital governance.
• In Guwahati, stormwater management in the Bahini Basin will be upgraded with diversion channels, drainage improvements, and a retention pond to reduce floods and recharge groundwater.

Suryoday SFB Launches FD-backed Credit Cards
On September 1, 2025, Suryoday Small Finance Bank (Suryoday SFB) launched two Fixed Deposit (FD)-backed secured credit cards, issued on the Rupay Network, allow customers to leverage their FDs as collateral to gain credit access without income or credit history.

• Customers can receive interest rates of up to 8.40% on their FD balances.

Credit Card Features:
Variants: The cards are available in two variants, such as Rupay Select Credit Card, which requires a minimum FD of Rs.1,15,000, and Rupay Platinum Credit Card, which requires a minimum of Rs.1,000 in FD.
UPI: The cards are fully Unified Payment Interface (UPI)-enabled and offers 0.5% cashback on all transactions.
Key Features:
The card offers lifetime-free status with no hidden charges, cashback up to Rs.3,000 per billing cycle, and exclusive RuPay offers across lifestyle categories. Annual fees of Rs.150 +Goods and Services Tax(GST) are waived on spending Rs.50,000 for Select and Rs.20,000 for Platinum variants.

SEBI Revised Rules for Intraday Index Options Effective from October 01, 2025
In September 2025, the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has introduced a revised framework to monitor intraday trading positions in index options, aimed to enhance transparency and strengthen risk management in the derivative markets.

• As per SEBI’s circular, the new rules for intraday monitoring norms will come into effect on October 01, 2025, while the penalty provisions related to expiry-day breaches will be effective from December 06, 2025.

Key Provisions:
Intraday Position Limit: As per SEBI new rules, the intraday net positions (after offsetting longs and shorts), calculated in terms of Future-Equivalent (FutEq) basis, have been capped at Rs 5,000 crore per entity from Rs.1,500 crore per entity in index options.
Gross Intraday Position Limit: The gross intraday position remains at Rs 10,000 crore per entity, in line with the current end-of-day gross limit.
Atleast 4 Random Snapshots: SEBI has directed all stock exchanges in India, to conduct minimum 4 random checks of traders’ positions during the trading session.

• They are also required to undertake one of these snapshots between 2:45 pm to 3:30 pm; a period when trading activity typically peaks.
• Also,the position value will be determined using the index price at the time of the snapshot.

Penalties: SEBI has also clarified that the entities breaching the limits outlined in the new framework will be subject to scrutiny by the stock exchanges.

• This may include providing explanations for the trades, reviewing any trading activity in the underlying index stocks, among others.
• In addition to these, breach of the limits on the day of contract derivative expiry could lead to penalties or additional surveillance deposits.

Submitting SOP: Market Infrastructure Institutions (MIIs), including stock exchanges and clearing corporations, have been directed to publish a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for market participants.

• They are also required to submit this SOP to SEBI within 15 days and communicated to market participants before the new framework is enforced.

India’s Manufacturing PMI Surges to 17-Year High of 59.3 in August 2025
On September 1, 2025, Global brokerage HSBC released ‘HSBC India Manufacturing Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI)’, a survey compiled by S&P Global. As per the survey, the manufacturing sector in India has recorded a major milestone, with the Manufacturing PMI reached a new high of 59.3 in August 2025, up from 59.1 in July 2025.

• It is the highest since 2008, marking 17-year high, indicating rapid growth and development.

Key Highlights:
Growth Drivers: The surge was driven by robust domestic demand and higher manufacturing output, with production growing 7.7% year-on-year(YoY), a sharp increase compared to 4.8% in the previous quarter.
PMI: The PMI survey is compiled from the responses of around 400 manufacturing firms. It is a key economic indicator based on surveys of business managers in the manufacturing and services sectors.

• It is based on the monthly surveys of purchasing managers whose response is weighted and combined into a single index number.

Score: A score above 50 indicates Expansion, below 50 signals Contraction and 50 indicates no change in business activity.

CRISIL Maintains India’s GDP Forecast at 6.5% for FY26
On September 2, 2025, Credit Rating Information Services of India Limited (CRISIL), a credit rating agency, released its Macroeconomics Report. As per the report, CRISIL has maintained the forecast of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth of India at 6.5% for the Financial Year 2025-26 (FY-26).

GDP: India’s GDP grew by 7.8% in Quarter 1 (April-June) of FY 26.

AP Govt Signs MoU with Tech Bharat Foundation for India’s First AI CoE in Visakhapatnam
On September 1, 2025, the Department of Information Technology, Electronics & Communications, Government of Andhra Pradesh (AP), signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Tech Bharat Foundation to establish India’s first Artificial Intelligence (AI) Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Visakhapatnam, AP.

About India’s 1st AI CoE:
Objectives: The key objectives include co-creating AI tools aimed at improving Government-to-Citizen (G2C) services, addressing governance issues through proof-of-concept projects, hosting a National AI Fellowship Program, where fellows directly work with government departments to develop AI prototypes.
AI Fellowship program: The inaugural 120-day AI Fellowship program has been launched, inviting applications until 4 September 2025 from individuals with skills in Python and Machine Learning (ML).
Stipend: The fellows will receive a monthly stipend of Rs.25,000, residential accommodation, access to advanced AI infrastructure, mentorship from industry experts, and opportunities for direct collaboration with government departments.
