Union Minister Rajnath Singh Approves Execution Model for the AMCA programmeOn May 27, 2025, Union Minister Rajnath Singh, Ministry of Defence (MoD) has approved the execution model for the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) programme, as efforts towards enhancing indigenous defence capabilities and fostering a robust domestic aerospace industrial ecosystem.

  • The programme will be implemented by the Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA), Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) in collaboration with industry partners.

Key Points:
i.The Execution Model Approach provides equal opportunities to both public and private sectors on a competitive basis. They can bid either independently or as a Joint Venture (JV) or as consortia.
ii.The entity/bidder should be an Indian company compliant with the laws and regulations of the country.
iii.The approval of the model is an important step towards harnessing the indigenous expertise, capability and capacity to develop the AMCA prototype, which will be a major milestone toawards Atmanirbharta in the aerospace sector.

Overview of PM Narendra Modi Visit to Gujarat from May 26-27, 2025Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi was on a two-day visit to Gujarat from 26th to 27th May 2025 to inaugurate and lay the foundation for various development projects span across sectors such as Railways, Power, Urban Development and Housing.
i.PM Modi inaugurated and dedicated the new Locomotive Manufacturing Plant (LMP), established by the Indian Railways(IR) and flagged off the first 9,000-Horsepower (HP) Electric Locomotives for domestic purposes and export in the LMP facility in Dahod.
ii.PM Modi virtually flagged off the Sabarmati (Ahmedabad)-Veraval Vande Bharat Express. The train will travel 438 miles in around 7 hours.
iii.He laid foundation, inaugurated and dedicated multiple projects worth Rs.53,400 crores in Bhuj in the district of Kutch, Gujarat.
iv.PM Modi attended the 20-year celebration of Gujarat’s Urban Growth Story in Gandhinagar and launched Urban Development Year 2025, marking 20 years since the inception of Urban Development Year 2005.

Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia Unveiled ‘Innovate to Transform’ as Theme for 9th edition of IMCIn May 2025, Union Minister Jyotiraditya Madhavrao Scindia, Ministry of Communications(MoC) and Ministry of Development of North East Region (MDoNER) unveiled ‘Innovate to Transform’ as the theme for the 9th edition of the India Mobile Congress (IMC 2025), which is scheduled to be held from October 08 to 11, 2025 at Yashobhoomi Convention Centre in New Delhi, Delhi.

  • This theme for IMC 2025 reflects the important role of innovation in shaping the future and enabling real, transformative change across various sectors like from industry and infrastructure to society and sustainability.

i.Union Minister Scindia also launched the revamped student volunteers led ‘Sanchar Mitra Scheme’, designed to mobilise the power of India’s Yuva Shakti (student volunteers) to become informed ambassadors of telecom awareness, cybersecurity, and digital empowerment.
ii.During the event, the DoT, under the MoC, announced the Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya Telecom Excellence Awards 2024, recognizing outstanding contributions in telecom innovation, skilling, services, manufacturing, and app development over the past three years.

MoR Approves New Train Service Between Agartala and Guwahati
In May 2025, the Ministry of Railways (MoR) approved the launch of a new express train service between Agartala (Tripura) and Guwahati (Assam) via Narangi (NNGE) station to address the increasing passenger demand between the two cities.

  • The approval follows a representation made by Biplab Kumar Deb, Member of Parliament (MP) from West Tripura and former Chief Minister (CM) of Tripura, to Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, MoR, during a meeting held in April 2025 in New Delhi(Delhi).

i.The train will originate from Agartala and halt at Narangi (NNGE), located on the outskirts of Guwahati.
ii.This new train service aims to reduce passenger traffic between the Northeast cities of Agartala and Guwahati, which serves as a major commercial, healthcare, and educational hub in the region.
iii.Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) successfully conducted a trial run of an electric locomotive between southern Assam and Tripura as part of the Rs 46 crore electrification project aimed at integrating Tripura into the national electric railway grid.

MoAFW Approves 3 New Crop Varieties from PDKVOn May 27, 2025, the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare (MoA&FW), Government of India (GoI) has approved 3 new high-yielding crop varieties and expanded the cultivation areas for three existing ones developed by Akola (Maharashtra) based Dr. Panjabrao Deshmukh Krishi Vidyapeeth (PDKV), with an aim to enhance agricultural productivity and sustainability across India.

  • This decision was made during the 93rd meeting of the Central Crop Variety Notification and Release Committee (CCVR-C) under MoA&FW.
  • The new varieties include AKAW 5100 Wheat, CSV 65 Yellow Sorghum (Kharif), and Super Jaki Chickpea (AKG 1402).

Newly Approved Varieties:
i.AKAW 5100 (Wheat): High-yielding, rust-resistant, drought-tolerant, and suitable for bread and chapati. Recommended for timely sowing in Maharashtra, Karnataka, Telangana, AP, and Tamil Nadu (TN).
ii.CSV 65 Yellow (Sorghum): A bio-fortified kharif variety containing 23.2 parts per million (ppm) zinc and 30.8 ppm iron. It yields 25–28 quintals per hectare (quintals/ha) of grain + 110–115 quintals/ha fodder. Matures in 110–112 days.
iii.Super Jaki Chickpea (AKG 1402): High-yield (2,073 kilograms per hectare (kg/ha)), early-maturing (98 days), machine-harvestable. Released for rainfed Maharashtra.
Area Expansion for Existing Varieties:
i.PDKV Amba Soybean (AMS 100-39): Now approved for Gujarat. Early-maturing (94–96 days), resistant to root/stem rot.
ii.PDKV Purva Soybean (AMS 2014-1): Expanded to Assam, Meghalaya, and southeastern Madhya Pradesh (MP). Yields 22–26 quintals/ha, matures in 105–107 days.
iii.TAG 73 Groundnut: Approved for Gujarat. Pod yield: 25–28 quintals/ha; oil content: 48–49%

ILO-NASK Report 2025: One in Four Jobs at Risk of being Transformed by GenAIIn May 2025, Geneva (Switzerland)-based International Labour Organisation (ILO) in collaboration with Poland-based National Research Institute (NASK) released their inaugural report titled ‘Generative AI and Jobs: A Refined Global Index of Occupational Exposure’. As per the report, one in four jobs (25%) across the world is potentially at the risk of being transformed by Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI).

  • The report emphasizes that GenAI’s effect is more likely to transform jobs than replace or eliminate them.

i.The report further showed that 34% of jobs in occupations exposed GenAI are in High-Income Countries (HICs) compared to 11% in Low-Income Countries (LICs).
ii.The report provides a comprehensive overview of how AI could transform occupations and employment worldwide by combining approximately 30,000 occupational tasks with expert validation, AI-assisted scoring, and ILO harmonized micro data.
iii.The report revealed that exposure among women remains to be significantly higher than men as 4.7% of women’s jobs worldwide fall into the highest-risk category, compared with 2.4% of such jobs among men.

Life insurance sector in India to grow at 10.5% against global average of 5%India’s life insurance market is projected to surge at 10.5% annually over the next decade, significantly outpacing the global average of  5% according to a report The Allianz Global Insurance Report 2025 by Allianze Global Insurance in May 2025.
Key Highlights:
i.The Indian market is poised to become the second largest in Asia, surpassing Japan as India’s life insurance sector is set to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 10.5% over the next decade.
ii.The report stated that most of the growth will be in the life segment, adding that more than half of the additional premium pool will be generated in Asia, with China leading the segment.
iii.China is followed by North America and Europe, but India is likely to grow at a much faster rate.
iv.India’s entire insurance market (across all segments) expanded by 10.6% in 2024, up from 7.7% in the previous year 2023, with premium income touching USD 145 billion. Health insurance, although still the smallest segment, led this surge with a remarkable 20.8% growth. Life insurance, holding almost 75% of the market, experienced robust growth of 10.6%, increasing from 7.7% in 2023.

  • Drools Pet Food has emerged as India’s first pet food brand to achieve unicorn status. It is the fourth Indian startup to enter the unicorn club in 2025, after Bengaluru (Karnataka) based Netradyne Technology Private Limited, Juspay Technologies Private Limited and Porter, an on-demand logistics platform.

Note: Unicorn is a privately owned startup valued at USD1 billion or above.

i.This milestone follows a USD 60 million minority investment in Drools by Louis Vuitton-backed L Catterton, a prominent global consumer-focused private equity firm, in June 2023.
ii.Drools, a pet food company, distributes its products across more than 40,000 retail outlets and exports to 22 countries.
iii.It operates 6 manufacturing units and offers over 650 Stock Keeping Units (SKU), including high-protein and prescription diets for pets.

India Records USD 81.04 Billion FDI Inflow in FY25In May 2025, the Ministry of Commerce & Industry(MoC&I) reported that India recorded provisional Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) inflows of USD 81.04 billion in the Financial Year 2024–25(FY25), marking a 14% rise compared to USD 71.28 billion received in FY24.

  • FDI has steadily grown from USD 36.05 billion in FY14, reflecting strong investor confidence.

i.The services sector emerged as the top recipient of FDI equity in FY25, attracting 19% of total inflows, followed by Computer software and hardware (16%) and Trading (8%).
ii.Maharashtra accounted for the highest share (39%) of total FDI equity inflows in FY25, followed by Karnataka (13%) and Delhi (12%).
iii.In source countries, Singapore led with 30% share, followed by Mauritius (17%) and the United States of America (USA) (11%).

MoPPG&P Announced NAeG 2025 Recognising 19 Initiatives Across IndiaOn May 27, 2025, the Department of Administrative Reforms and Public Grievances (DARPG), under the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions (MoPPG&P), Government of India, announced the ‘National Awards for e-Governance (NAeG) 2025’ to honor and encourage outstanding achievements in the implementation of e-Governance initiatives across India.

  • The 22nd edition of NAeG includes six award categories, with the Gram Panchayats category introduced for the first time to acknowledge grassroots-level digitization efforts.

i.The awards will be presented during the 28th National Conference on e-Governance (NCeG), scheduled to be held in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh (AP), on June 9-10, 2025.
i.A total of 19 initiatives were recognized under NAeG 2025, comprising 10 gold, 6 silver and 3 jury awards.
ii.The NAeG 2025 include a Trophy, Certificate, and a monetary incentive of Rs 10 lakh for Gold Awardees and Rs 5 lakh for Silver Awardees.

Adille Sumariwalla Honoured with Asian Athletics Leadership Gold Pin in South Korea
In May 2025, Dr. Adille J. Sumariwalla, Vice President of World Athletics and former President of the Athletics Federation of India (AFI), was conferred with the Asian Athletics Leadership Gold Pin by the Asian Athletics Association (AAA) during its Congress held in Gumi, South Korea.

  • The award was presented by General Dahlan Al Hamad, President of AAA, in recognition of Sumariwalla’s significant contributions to the development and leadership of athletics across the Asian continent.

About Adille J. Sumariwalla:
i.Athletic Achievements:He represented India in the 100 metres(m) sprint at the 1980 Moscow Olympics and held the national record in the event for 18 years. He clinched the gold medal at the 1984 South Asian Games.
ii.Administrative Roles: Served as President of AFI for 12 years; elected as Vice President of World Athletics in 2023, becoming the first Indian to hold this position; held various roles in international athletics committees, contributing to policy and development.

Independent Candidate Nicusor Dan Sworn-in as New President of RomaniaIn May 2025, independent candidate Nicușor Daniel Dan, a mathematician and former Mayor of Bucharest, has officially sworn-in as the 7th President of Romania during the joint session of Romanian Parliament in Bucharest, the capital city of Romania.

  • He replaced Centralist Liberal Party leader Ilie Bolojan, who has been serving interim President of Romania since February 2025.
  • He ran for the presidential election as an independent candidate and won the election by defeating his opponent George Simion, leader of the Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR), with 53.6% of the total votes.

i.Nicușor Daniel Dan is brilliant mathematician, who won two gold medals at the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) in 1987 and 1988.
ii.Before starting his political career, he was actively engaged in civic activism and public service work.
iii.In 2012, he contested his 1st election as an independent candidate for the City Hall of Bucharest.
iv.He co-founded the Save Bucharest Union (USB), a political party focused on anti-corruption and transparency in 2015, which was later, renamed as Save Romania Union (USR).

Dr. Samir V. Kamat Gets Second Extension as Chairman of DRDO & Secretary of DDR&D
In May 2025, the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) approved a second one-year extension in service to Dr. Samir V. Kamat, Secretary of New Delhi(Delhi) based Department of Defence Research and Development (DDR&D) and Chairman of New Delhi based Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). His tenure has been extended from June 1, 2025, to May 31, 2026, or until further orders, whichever is earlier, under Fundamental Rule 56(d).

  • He was first appointed as Secretary, DDR&D and Chairman, DRDO on 25th August 2022, succeeding Dr. G. Satheesh Reddy.

Citigroup Appoints Prashant Thakker as Head of Corporate Bank for South and Southeast Asia
On May 26, 2025, New York, United States of America (USA)-based Citigroup Inc., a leading multinational investment bank and financial services corporation, appointed Prashant Thakker as the Head of its corporate bank for South- and Southeast Asia, effective immediately.

  • He currently leads Citi’s Capital Management for Japan, Asia North, Australia, and Asia South.

i.Thakker will be based in Singapore to oversee business strategy, financial performance, talent development, and execution across Citi’s corporate banking sectors.
ii.This includes local corporate, financial institution, public sector, and global network banking businesses in the Asia South markets, comprising India, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka.

Intelsat Receives IN-SPACe Approval to Offer Direct Satellite Broadcast Services in IndiaOn May 27, 2025, United States of America (USA) based Intelsat, a multinational satellite services provider has received an approval from the Ahmedabad (Gujarat) based Indian National Space Promotion and Authorization Centre (IN-SPACe), Department of Space (DoS), Government of India (GoI), to provide direct satellite coverage to media organizations in India.

  • The approval authorizes Intelsat to operate four Geostationary (GEO) satellites such as Indian Space (IS)-17, IS-20, IS-36, and IS-39, offering Communication Band (C-Band) coverage across India.
  • Following the authorization, Intelsat secured contracts with three of India’s largest media companies, expanding its regional footprint.

Key Points:
i.The approved satellite fleet will primarily serve the dynamic broadcast media industry of India, enabling enhanced content delivery and distribution capabilities across the subcontinent and from India to other regions of the world.
ii.The satellite network with four satellites covering the region will provide Indian broadcasters with reliable, high-quality connectivity solutions that meet their evolving needs.
iii.Intelsat has become one of the first foreign satellite operators to receive approval from the Indian government to provide satellite coverage in India

New Cave-Adapted Fish Species Schistura densiclava Discovered in Meghalaya
In May 2025, a new species of cave-dwelling fish named ‘Schistura densiclava’ was discovered in the Krem Mawjymbuin cave, located in the East Khasi Hills district of Meghalaya. The species was identified by a team of researchers from Gauhati University, Guwahati, Assam; Lady Keane College in Shillong, Meghalaya and the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-National Bureau of Fish Genetic Resources(ICAR-NBFGR) in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh(UP).

  • The findings have been published in the Journal of Fish Biology, highlighting the unique characteristics and habitat of this species.

i.The fish was found in a fast-flowing stream 60 meters (m) inside the cave, where water temperature is 18 degree celsius (°C) and oxygen levels are low.
ii.It has a pale yellow-green body with 14–20 greyish-black vertical bars and a thick dorsal stripe, which is the basis for its name ‘densiclava’ derived from Latin, meaning ‘thick stripe’.
iii.Unlike obligate cave species (e.g., Schistura papulifera), it retains functional eyesight and pigmentation, enabling survival in diverse environments.
iv.It is classified under the Nemacheilidae family of bottom-dwelling freshwater fishes ; the fish has barbels (whisker-like organs) for sensing prey in low-light conditions.

India Tops Medal Tally at ISSF Junior World Cup 2025 in Suhl with 11 MedalsThe International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) Junior World Cup Rifle/Pistol/Shotgun 2025 (1st leg) concluded in Suhl, Germany, from 19–27 May 2025. India emerged as the top performer with a total of 11 medals, comprising 3 gold, 4 silver, and 4 bronze, followed by China  with 4 medals.

  • This event witnessed participation from 638 shooters representing 59 countries, with India has the largest team of 57 shooters.
  • The second leg (last leg) of ISSF Junior World Cup 2025 will be held in New Delhi (Delhi), India from 24 September–2 October 2025.

i.Tejaswani Sawant, representing India, secured the gold medal in the women’s 25 metre (m) pistol event, defeating Alina Nestsiarovich, who competed under the Individual Neutral Athletes (AIN) category.
ii.Kanak Budhwar from India, won gold in the women’s 10 metre air pistol event, outperforming Anna Dulce of Moldova.
iii.In the women’s 10 metre air rifle event, India’s Shambhavi Shravan Kshirsagar clinched gold, while Ojasvi Thakur, also from India, secured the silver medal.

World Menstrual Hygiene Day 2025 – May 28World Menstrual Hygiene(MH) Day or Menstrual Hygiene Day (MH Day) is annually observed across the globe on 28th May to raise awareness about menstrual health and equity, addressing the challenges of period poverty and stigma.

  • The day promotes access to menstrual products, safe hygiene facilities, and stigma-free environments to ensure menstruators can manage periods with dignity.

Theme:
The theme for World Menstrual Hygiene Day 2025 is “Together for a #PeriodFriendlyWorld.

  • The theme called for collective action to ensure that menstruation does not restrict access to education, health, or opportunities.

Background:
i.In May 2013, German based Non-Governmental Organizations (NGO) WASH United initiated a 28-day social media campaign called “May #MENSTRAVAGANZA” on platforms like Twitter to raise awareness about menstruation and the importance of Menstrual Hygiene Management (MHM) as a key part of Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) programs.
ii.The first MH day was observed on 28th May 2014.
Why May 28?
The date 28th May (28/5) symbolises the average 28-day menstrual cycle with 5 days of bleeding.
Initiatives:
i.Globally, Menstrual Health and Hygiene (MHH) Funding Tracker by MH Day and WASH United tracks investments to enhance transparency in menstrual health programs.
ii.In Malawi, reusable sanitary pad programs have reduced school absenteeism and supported local businesses.
iii.The Period Purse, founded in 2017 in Toronto (Canada), works to ensure sustainable access to menstrual products for all, regardless of financial status.
Keyfacts:
i.Approximately 39% of schools worldwide provide menstrual health education. This figure increases in secondary schools, with 84% in Central and Southern Asia offering such education, compared to 34% in primary schools.
ii.Only 31% of schools globally have bins for menstrual waste in girls’ toilets. In Least Developed Countries, this drops to 17%, and in sub-Saharan Africa, it is as low as 11%

AP Government Renames YSR District as YSR Kadapa District
On May 26, 2025, the Government of Andhra Pradesh (AP) issued Government Order (GO) Ms No. 170 through the Revenue (Lands IV) Department, officially renaming YSR District as YSR Kadapa District under the provisions of the Andhra Pradesh Districts (Formation) Act, 1974.

  • In 2022, Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party (YSRCP) renamed it YSR District, removing “Kadapa,” which drew criticism for ignoring the district’s 200-year-old heritage and weakening its historical and cultural identity.

i.Originally known as Kadapa district, it was renamed in 2010 as YSR District in memory of former Chief Minister (CM) Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy after his demise in 2009.
ii.Kadapa, reflects its historical role as a gateway for pilgrims traveling to Lord Venkateshwara Temple in Tirupathi, AP.
iii.The spelling of ‘Cuddapah’ was officially changed to Kadapa in 2005. ‘Cuddapah’ was derived from the Telugu word “Gadapa” which means threshold.
