IndianOil Equips Indian Army with Green Hydrogen Fuel Cell Bus; MoU Signed to Promote Hydrogen Fuel Cell technology
Indian Oil Corporation Ltd. (IndianOil) has handed over a state-of-the-art green hydrogen fuel cell bus to the Indian Army at the National War Memorial, India Gate, New Delhi, Delhi. This will promote sustainable, eco-friendly transportation solutions.
- IndianOil and the Indian Army also signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to pioneer the deployment of hydrogen fuel cell technology for heavy-duty e-mobility.
Key People:
The handing over and MoU signing ceremony were held in the presence of General Manoj Pande, Chief of Army Staff (CAS) and Shrikant Madhav Vaidya, Chairman of IndianOil.
About the Project:
i.The project evaluates the performance of fuel-cell electric buses for public transit in the challenging climatic conditions of the Delhi-National Capital Region (NCR).
ii.It assesses the impact of local fuel and air quality on the performance of fuel cell systems and vehicles.
iii.It also evaluates the effectiveness, longevity, and operational reliability of fuel cell buses intended for public fleet utilisation.
Additional info:
At present, IndianOil is operating around 15 fuel cell buses in the Delhi-NCR region accumulating a total mileage of 300,000 kilometers (kms) i.e. 20000 kms on each bus.

GAIL Inaugurated its First 10MW Green Hydrogen Plant in MP
Gas Authority of India Limited (GAIL) has inaugurated its first largest Green Hydrogen (GH2) Plant at Vijaipur complex in Madhya Pradesh (MP). It has been installed in line with the National Green Hydrogen Mission (NGHM).
i.The plant has a capacity to produce 4.3 tonnes per day (TPD) of hydrogen through 10 MegaWatt (MW) Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) Electrolyzer by using renewable power to perform electrolysis of water.
- The 10 MW PEM Electrolyzer for the green-hydrogen producing unit has been imported from Canada.
ii.The hydrogen produced at this plant will have a purity of 99.99% by volume and will be generated at a pressure of 30 kilograms per square centimetre (kg/cm2).
iii.The 10 MW plant was built with an investment of Rs 231 crore which marks a major step towards achieving the GAIL’s target of net-zero status by 2040 and National Green Hydrogen Mission (NGHM)’s goal of 5 million tons of annual green hydrogen production capacity for India by 2030.
Note:GAIL is also setting up around 20 MW solar power plants at Vijaipur (both ground-mounted and floating) to meet the requirement of green power for the 10 MW PEM Electrolyzer.

SEBI Mandates Social Enterprises on SSE to Submit Annual Impact Report for FY24 The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has instructed the social enterprises who have registered or raised funds through Social Stock Exchange (SSE) to submit an ‘Annual Impact Report’ for the fiscal year 2023-24 to the exchange by the end of October 2024.
- In September 2023, SEBI required the social enterprises that raised funds through SSE to disclose the annual impact report within 90 days from the end of financial year.
Note:
- The annual report for SSE includes both qualitative and quantitative details of the social impact created by the social enterprise such as strategic intent, planning, approach, and an impact scorecard.
- Not-for-profit organisations (NPOs) registered on the SSE are required to show their annual activities on the exchange for FY24.
- If an NPO is registered but do not have any listed securities, the report should also include significant activities, interventions and programmes, among other details.
Key Highlights:
i.SEBI has appointed two additional agencies – ICMAI Social Auditors Organisation under the Institute of Cost Accountants of India (ICAI) and ICSI Institute of Social Auditors under the Institute of Company Secretaries of India as Self-Regulatory Organisations (SROs) to assess the societal impacts of social activities carried out by social enterprises.
ii.These agencies can act as platforms to register social auditors. These are added to the SRO mentioned under the ICAI for the social impact assessor.
Social Impact Assessor :
A social impact assessor is any individual registered with self-regulatory organisation under the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India or another such agency, who has done a certification program organized by the National Institute of Securities Market (NISM).
Social Stock Exchange :
A social stock exchange is a platform which is different from the existing stock exchanges that helps the non-profit organisations and for-profit social enterprises to raise funds from the capital market.
Social Enterprises:
i.Social enterprises involve those NPOs and for-profit social enterprises that aim to achieve social objectives.
ii.They are required to involve in social activities within 16 broad categories as mentioned by SEBI.

Government Set to Launch New National Portal “NHCX” to Simplify Health Insurance ClaimsMinistry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) is set to launch a unified portal named National Health Claim Exchange (NHCX) to simplify the process of filing health insurance claims. It aims to foster transparency and ensure interoperability of health insurance claims and help to enhance the efficiency of the health insurance sector.
- The portal is expected to be launched in next 2 or 3 months.
Key Points:
i.The NHCX is developed by the National Health Authority (NHA) and it has been developed as part of Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM).
- Ayushman Bharat Health Accounts (ABHA) in India have touched 62.12 crore as of May 24, 2024.
ii.The portal will serve as a single-window platform between health insurance companies, hospitals and insurance policyholders, and will facilitate easier and faster health insurance claim settlements.
iii.Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) has advised all its insurers and service providers to integrate with the NHCX platform.
iv.Government expects to integrate around 50 health insurance companies and 200-250 hospitals across the country with NHCX platform.
Additional Information:
i.After IRDAI mandated that all insurance policies should be issued in electronic form from April 1, leading to insurance plans of one individual consolidated in his e-Insurance Account (eIA), NHCX is the next major reform in the insurance industry.
ii.IRDAI has earlier approved ‘Bima Sugam’ another revolution in the insurance sector to provide an online marketplace for insurance, to help policyholders compare premiums and features of all categories of insurance products.

RBI Imposes Monetary Penalty on ICICI Bank, Yes Bank For Rule Violations
i.The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has imposed a monetary penalty of Rs 1 crore on ICICI Bank Limited for sanctioning term loans to certain entities to replace budgetary resources for specific projects without proper due diligence.
- ICICI Bank was imposed a penalty for non-compliance of ‘Loans and Advances – Statutory and Other Restrictions’.
- It has approved the loans without conducting thorough due diligence on the viability and bankability of the projects.
- The repayment of these loans were paid from budgetary resources and the bank did not ensure that the funding proposals were for specific monitorable projects.
ii.The RBI has also imposed a monetary penalty of Rs 91 lakh on Yes Bank Limited for multiple violations of banking norms.
- Yes Bank has violated RBI regulations by charging fees on accounts with zero balance and opening internal accounts in customer’s names for unauthorised purposes such as parking funds and routing customer transactions.
Note: The violation of Yes Bank and ICICI Bank were uncovered during the inspection of the books as part of the RBI’s supervisory evaluation for the fiscal year 2022.

RIL Partners With NIL To Accelerate New Energy Investments
Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) has entered into a technology licensing agreement with Norway based Nel Hydrogen Electrolyser AS, a fully-owned subsidiary of Norway-based Nel ASA, aimed at accelerating its investments to make electrolysers, particularly for production of green hydrogen.
- The agreement provides the RIL with an exclusive licence for Nel’s alkaline electrolysers in India and also allows it to manufacture the alkaline electrolysers for internal use globally.
- Nel ASA has about 10-15 per cent global market share in electrolysers with 350MW and 400MW deliveries in 2023-2024.
- This will help RIL meet its ambitious goal of 1-1-1 (one kilo of green hydrogen available for USD1 in a decade) for green-hydrogen production and the global goal is largely towards USD2 per kg by 2030.
- The Indian government has set a target of 500 Giga Watt (GW) of installed renewable energy by 2030. Of this, solar is expected to account for the largest share with 280GW.

DRDO Chairman Samir V Kamat Gets One Year Extension in ServiceThe Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved the proposal of the Ministry of Defence(MoD) to extend the tenure of Dr. Samir Venkatapathy Kamat, Secretary, Department of Defence Research and Development (DDR&D), and Chairman of Defence Research Development Organisation (DRDO) by one year beyond the age of superannuation(31st May 2024).
- He will continue in his present position till 31st May 2025.
- He has been serving as the Secretary of DDR&D and Chairman of DRDO since 25th August 2022 and was set to retire on 31st May 2024.
Background:
The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has set up a nine-member panel headed by former principal scientific advisor Prof. K. Vijay Raghavan to revamp the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). The panel had submitted its report, ‘Redefining Defence Research and Development’, in early January. But its implementation has been stuck as higher-ups in the DRDO have opposed some of the structural changes suggested.
- For this purpose, the government of India has set up an Overseeing Committee headed by Dr Kamat and has two senior director generals of the DRDO.
- To ensure the continuity in the reform process underway in DRDO, the government has extended the term of Dr Kamat by one year.

Doordarshan Kisan (DD Kisan), a Doordarshan channel has become the first Indian Government TV channel to launch two Artificial intelligence (AI) Anchors AI Krish and AI Bhoomi, which can speak in 50 different languages and provide information about agricultural research.
- It was launched marking DD Kisan’s 9th anniversary on May 26th 2024.
- The main aim is to give farmers information about farming research, market trends, weather updates, and government programmes. The channel will be available to farmers in every state across India.
- The AI anchors can read news 24/7 and 365 days without breaks.
- DD Kisan channel helps to strengthen the three-dimensional concept of agriculture which includes balanced farming, animal husbandry and plantation.

i.DD Kisan is the only TV channel in India, which has been established by the Government of India (GoI) and dedicated to the farmers.

Indian Premier League 2024: Kolkata Knight Riders won the championship defeating Sunrisers HyderabadKolkata Knight Riders(KKR) captained by Shreyas Iyer(Indian cricketer) has won the champions title of the 17th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL 2024) by defeating Sunrisers Hyderabad(SRH) captained by Pat Cummins(Australian cricketer) by eight wickets in the finals held at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai, Tamil Nadu(TN).
- This marks KKR’s 3rd IPL title. The team has previously won the title in 2012 and 2014 under the captaincy of Gautam Gambhir.

Dipa Karmakar Becomes 1st Indian Gymnast to Win Gold Medal at Asian Gymnastics Championships 2024Dipa Karmakar (from Tripura) has become the first Indian gymnast to win a gold medal in the women’s vault apparatus at the Asian Gymnastics Championships 2024 (11th Senior Women Artistic Gymnastics Asian Championships) held from 24th to 26th May 2024 in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.
- This is the first time an Indian gymnast has won a gold medal in any event at the Asian Championships. She achieved an average score of 13.566 in the vault final.
- Kim Son-hyang and Jo Kyong-byol of North Korea finished with the silver and bronze medals respectively.
Note: Previously, Indian gymnasts have won 4 bronze medals at the Asian Championships. The 4 bronzes were earned by Dipa Karmakar in women’s vault in 2015; Ashish Kumarmen in the floor exercise in 2006, and Pranati Nayak in women’s vault in 2019 and 2022.
About Dipa Karmakar:
i.Dipa Karmakar won bronze in the women’s vault final at the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games, Scotland. This was her first international medal.
ii.In 2016, She became the first female gymnast from India to compete in the Olympics. She finished 4th at the 2016 Summer Olympics, held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
iii.She won the gold medal at the 2018 International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) Artistic Gymnastics World Cup series held in Mersin, Türkiye and became the first Indian ever to win a gold medal at a global gymnastics event.

Archery World Cup 2024: Indian Women’s Compound Team Wins Gold & Mixed Team Wins SilverIndia won 2 medals (1 gold and 1 silver) in the Archery World Cup 2024 Stage 2 held from 21st to 26th May 2024 in Yecheon, Republic of Korea(South Korea).
- The Indian women’s compound team of Aditi Gopichand Swami, Jyothi Surekha Vennam and Parneet Kaur won the gold medal defeating the Turkish team of Hazal Burun, Ayse Bera Suzer and Begum Yuva.
- India’s mixed archery team of Jyothi Surekha Vennam and Priyansh won the silver medal. They were defeated by Olivia Dean and Sawyer Sullivan of the United States of America (USA) in the finals.

i. Aditi Gopichand Swami, Jyothi Surekha Vennam and Parneet Kaur have won the World Cup gold medal for the third time.
- They won their first gold medal at the 2024 Archery World Cup Stage 1 in Shanghai, China.
ii. India won a total of eight medals including five gold medals, two silver and one bronze in the Archery World Cup Stage 1 in Shanghai, China.
iv.They also won a gold medal in the 2023 Archery World Cup Stage Four in Paris, France.

i.Three-time Olympian Deepika Kumari lost the women’s individual recurve archery bronze medal after the defeat from Mexico’s Alejandra Valencia.
ii.Thus, India gained 2 medals (I gold and 1 silver) in the Stage 2 of the Archery World Cup 2024.
About Archery World Cup 2024:
i.Archery World Cup 2024, the 18th edition event, is annually organised by the World Archery Federation. This is a five-stage event which is being held from April to October 2024.
ii.The 2024 Archery World Cup Stage 1 was held in Shanghai, China in April 2024. Stage 2 was held in Yecheon, South Korea in May 2024. The Archery World Cup Stage 3 will be held in Antalya, Türkiye in June 2024.
iii. India currently ranks first on the list (highest number of gold medals) followed by South Korea and the USA.
Formula 1: Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc wins Monaco F1 GP 2024 On 26 May 2024, Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc, a racing driver from Monaco won the Monaco Grand Prix (GP) 2024 (officially Formula 1 (F1) Grand Prix de Monaco 2024) held at Circuit de Monaco in Monte Carlo. This victory is Charles Leclerc’s 1st win since the 2022 Austrian GP, breaking a 39-race winless line.
- With this victory, Charles became the 1st Monegasque driver to win the Monaco GP since Louis Chiron in 1931.
- McLaren’s Oscar Piastri of Australia finished 2nd and Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz of Spain finished 3rd in the Monaco GP 2024.
Note: He had never previously finished on the podium at this circuit in F1 or F2.

i.Charles Leclerc secured his 5th podium finish in the 1st 8 races of the season. This surpasses his previous record of 4 podiums in the 1st 20 races in 2023.

iii.It’s the 17th consecutive race weekend where Leclerc has scored, and his 6th win ties the career total of Gilles Villeneuve (Canada).
iv.This victory marks Ferrari’s 10th win in Monaco and the 4th consecutive dry race in Monaco led from start to finish by one driver.
v.2024 marks the 75th season of the F1 world championship and Monaco GP 2024 was round 8 of the 2024 F1 season.

Note: The observance also coincides with the International Day of Action for Women’s Health commemorated by women’s health advocates across the globe on 28 May since 1987.
Report on Menstrual Health:
On the occasion of World MH Day, the World Health Organisation (WHO)/UNICEF Joint Monitoring Programme (JMP) for WASH, launched a report titled “Progress on drinking water, sanitation, and hygiene in schools 2000-2023: special focus on menstrual health.”
- The report analysed for the 1st time emerging national data on MHH in schools globally.
Key Findings:
i.Only 2 out of 5 schools (39%) worldwide provide menstrual health education, with higher rates in secondary schools.
ii.Globally, less than 1 in 3 schools (31%) have bins for menstrual waste, dropping to 17% in the least developed countries, and only 1 in 10 schools (11%) in sub-Saharan Africa.
iii.Just 12% of schools in sub-Saharan Africa offer menstrual materials for free or purchase.
iv.Only 30 countries (over one-third of which are in sub-Saharan Africa) track relevant menstrual health indicators, hindering comprehensive efforts.
